I have read many books about Catherine The Great and this is by far the star. The author says up front that she will write about the aspects of Catherine's life that most interest her. I suppose that meant a more personal treatment, which I really appreciated. By the end of the book, I felt that I knew a lot more about who Catherine was as a woman and a monarch. Great writing!
Henri Troyat writes well of a woman who had a natural appetite for absolutism. She subjugated the serfs, jailed dissidents, lost her head over younger lovers who were hired to service her lust, encouraged obscene consumption in imitation of Versailles although she detested the French, deplored the ineluctable rise of republicanism and the concept of human rights, stole her son's children, frustrated native Russian talents in preference to ill-fitting Continental transplants, neglected her country's infrastructure (except possibly for establishing some institutions of learning), and generally ruled in such a way that her death began the undoing of all she had worked for for 34 years; that is to say, she did little to strengthen its non-parasitic systems or institutions, she merely enforced her will.I'm not entirely sure after reading this what made her "Great," unless it was her military conquests, which are given rather hasty treatment by Troyat. Maybe other hereditary monarchs were as bad as Peter III and she merely shone by comparison. Maybe all an hereditary monarch had to do in those days to be considered great was not let the country go to hell in a handbasket.Those are my thoughts as I finish this book. As a complete newcomer to Catherine, I feel I've learned plenty, and I'm curious enough to try Massie's biography of Catherine, as well as a few biogs of Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great.
I am not a historian. I am a person who Just wanted to know more about Catherine the great. She shares the same birthday as me and what I have heard of her brilliance and...sexuality (rumors about horses), made me want to read about her.From this book I got to know Catherine. That's what I was hoping. Through ample research examples; letters from Catherine and from her peers, historical accounts...I really trusted Rounding as capable and also fair conveyor of Catherine's world (to the best of her ability!). She was committed to FACTS, yet facts are not always boring...in fact, most of these facts are quite entertaining! Some facts in the book were better than fiction. Some things in Catherine's life were so amazing that I had to call a friend in the middle of the book just to express my AWE. Some surprises I found were how poorly Catherine was treated at times...the state of her marriage...The state of Russia.Still, as a casual reader, some of this book does get dense at times. I personally have trouble navigating through all the Russian names and some of the politics. That being said, I learned so much more from this book than I anticipated. It was worth the commitment to the book to get through the challenging parts.This book is not sensationalism, although it is...at times Sensational. Catherine was a much more brilliant and focused woman than I could have hoped. A true leader! Certainly she put in her dues to acquire so much experience and respect. The romantic escapades really take a back seat to the basis of Catherine's true power and expertise, but I wasn't upset by this at all. Lot's of interesting characters in this book besides Catherine too. This will get your imagination going.Do read this book.
Prior to reading this book, the only information that I had on Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, was that she was an 18th century Czarina of some repute and that she was essentially a nymphomaniac. While the author disputes my clinical characterization of Catherine's sexual prowess, he certainly does take great pains to point out her long list of conquests, right up until her death at a then advanced age.This book is very informative and quite enlightening as it relates to the political and social mores of Eastern European and Asian aristocracy during the period of Catherine's reign. The tangled webs of shifting alliances during the roughly 50 years covered by the book are many times fascinating and at times hung by the thread of whether a 16 year old heir to a throne was enchanted at first site by a 13 year old princess. Entire nations hung in the balance.Especially interesting was the author's repeated juxtaposition between Catherine's espoused liberal "enlightened monarch" ideals and her actual rule over, and disposal of millions of enslaved serfs. Her fascination and financial support of many liberal French and Swiss political reformers and philosophers and then her horror when such philosophies actual came to fruition in the French Revolution.Ultimately, Catherine was a woman of her times and indisputably proved to be a most able successor to the earlier Peter the Great inasmuch as she made Russia a major player on the European stage and greatly expanded the territory under her control. The personalities involved make for a highly entertaining read.I've seen some of the comments labeling the prose as dry or tedious and tend to disagree. Certainly, writing style of non-fiction historical biographies differs from that seen in fictionalized accounts. In addition, this is a translation which perhaps hinders certain elements of style that others might prefer. All in all, I was not dissatified with the writing or the content. I recommend this book to any seeking an understanding of Russian or Eastern European history and/or culture during the mid to late 18th century.
