Our daughter loves these books!

Daughter loves pulling back the felt patches to reveal the animal behind it and all of the vivid colors capture her attention.

These books are my daughter’s absolute favorite. She loves the bright colors and lifting the felt to reveal the animals! The colors are vibrant and the illustrations are fun. GREAT for babies. Also, so much better than paper flap books that my baby tears up! These are basically indestructible. We now have four of these books in our home. Where’s the Giraffe, zebra, lady bug and dog!

A few months ago I purchased Complete Metalsmith: Professional Edition by Tim McCreight. As much as I love his book, I love this one even more. This is a beautiful book with gorgeous photographs and a wealth of information. I've been a Silversmith for about 15 years and even I learned some new tricks and techniques. This book, along with Tim McCreight's Complete Metalsmith is a must have for any metalsmith's library. But if I had to choose between one or the other, this is the one I would choose.I'm a huge "How To Book" reader and most How To books fall short of what I'd like to see in them, but this one actually surprised me by giving me more than I expected.Love it!

This is a well-organized encyclopedia of jewelry techniques. If you're looking for a book with "projects", this is not the book for you. What it does do is show specific steps of many different techniques in jewelry making. Many of the techniques covered lean more towards metal work (rings, bracelets, bezels, etc.), but has a lot of useful information, no matter what kind of jewelry artist you are. The techniques are shown, step-by step, with photos showing the process, as well, and it's a fantastic addition to my growing library. I highly recommend it. This book answered my questions about the differences between and the uses of various tools, metals, and they "whens", as well - when would I use this technique, and why this tool, or metal, or stone, as opposed to something else. I learned a ton just skimming through it, and it will be a go-to for years to come, I know. The book begins by going over the safety basics for protective equipment, using machines safely, working with heated metal, and using and storing chemicals. It goes on to give a brief history of jewelry.Next, the "meat" of the book:Chapter 1: "Work Space and Tools, and Materials": This chapter covers a wide range of tools and equipment, how to set up your workspace, health and safety equipment, and a section on materials like precious metals, base metals, other types of metals, natural materials, synthetic materials, and gemstones. I love that the author explains the differences between and the uses for the different types of metals, and why one would choose to use one over the other. She also shows pictures of each of the tools/machines she talks about, their function, and the techniques they are useful for. She reiterates the use of safety equipment; bringing awareness to what type of safety equipment is appropriate for what job. She takes you step by step through the process of the techniques she covers, with pictures to illustrate the steps. She covers steps for the technique, but doesn't present a "project" as a context for the technique - the author assumes you have a project in mind that you want to do, and shows how to do a lot of different techniques that could help you accomplish your project. This is very much an encyclopedia and a reference manual for someone who maybe hasn't taken a lot of classes or for someone who doesn't want to hunt down a technique on YouTube. It's also great for the serious beginner or hobbyist. It's well cross-referenced, too, so if you're looking at a tool, it's cross-referenced to a technique, and visa-versa.Chapter 2: "Techniques". This chapter mostly focuses on metalworking techniques (the core techniques used, construction, forming, steps to create mechanisms for catches, latches, chains, clasps, and hinges, etc., color and texture, and stone setting). At the end of the chapter, there is a section on stringing and knotting beads, and when to "outsource" your work for specific techniques or processes that require highly specialized skills.Chapter 3: "Design": This chapter covers inspiration, drawing (and the different kinds of drawing, from "life-studies" to design ideas, to technical drawing, and "presentation" drawing), and takes the reader through how to develop a design. it's a short, but very informative chapter.Chapter 4: "Going Into Business": This chapter covers photography & promotion of a finished piece. It also covers selling and exhibiting your work. For those who are considering selling their work, it is a helpful overview of going into business, determining cost and pricing, and what type of jewelry artist you are, and where you might want to show or exhibit your work, whether it be online, in a gallery setting, etc. It covers how to show your jewelry in various settings/situations, as well. (Again, a short chapter, but good info.)Chapter 5: "Reference": This chapter covers gemstones, metric and imperial conversions, tool shapes, standard sizes for rings in a chart that shows U.K., US, and Europe sizing. There's a glossary of terms, and a useful section on Suppliers and Services for some of the materials and tools used in the techniques covered in the book. There's also a "Further Reading" section, that lists books, magazines, websites, galleries, fairs and institutions as well as an index. In short, love this book, and I'm glad I made the investment!

I really love that the book is in color and comes at a decent price. The thing I did not like about this book is that it does not have all the steps clearly defined when making the items. I tried to make a bracelet that was described, which involved bending some thick wire and hammering the corners to make a cool, boxy bracelet, but ended up bending the bracelet the wrong way so it did not come out properly. This book has some nice projects, but may require some extra knowledge and thinking through to fill in the gaps.

As many reviewers have already stated, this book makes a great addition to your jewelry-technique library. While I found it lacking in some details (mostly the "nitty gritty" of specific techniques), for the size of the book the author certainly crams in a lot of concise information. There is no shortage of clear, insightfully selected photos. I chose the book for metal techniques and found it contained all manner of media - plastics, for instance (her pages on kiln-heated acrylic bangles have me very tempted). Also helpful are the sections toward the back, which touch on "less interesting" practical advice like exhibiting/shooting your work, promoting, and a reference section. I found her section on beading rather helpful - doing metal I have been fairly in the dark regarding what type of threads to use and which knotting methods work best when including strands in my work. While I never would have purchased a beading book, Young's pages on it have me much more confident in that area. It's things like that which make this a very valuable book to have around. I didn't jump right in to reading it when I first purchased it, but I've found that during the past year it's constantly been referred to.From the viewpoint of a mixed-media/primarily-metal beginning jeweler, I'd recommend this book combined with Tim McCreight's Complete Metalsmith and Carles Codina's The Complete Book of Jewelry Making. Neither of the latter books are "complete" but they're still wonderful. And if you're interested in plastics, I just picked up Codina's The New Jewelry at the library - might buy that one! It's got some fantastic ideas for resins (if you own some basic sanding/buffing equipment).

This book is not really a step-by-step guide but more of a reference book detailing many different tools, techniques, and materials. I highly recommend it in addition to other more directive books. It's beautifully laid out with many great color images. Design of the book is awesome and I'm really happy with this purchase.

Perfect for Beginners but anyone with experience will quickly run out of run way if you get my drift.I would give this 5 stars if this was my first book as a beginner but since I've been at this for a while I find it less useful.Seems to attempt to be like a mini, modern Jewelry: Concepts And Technology by Untracht.

For the price these flash cards from Alfred Publishing are excellent. They are great for beginners and an excellent review for all. I played trombone proficiently years ago, and recently began taking formal guitar lessons. It is amazing how much you can forget over time: these cards helped me get back up to speed as quickly as possible. They are ideal particularly for a beginning piano student, but are useful to students of all instruments.I liked the color coding (five colors) which makes studying specific problem areas easier. They also come with an index to help you find a specific card by number, though I found that of limited value. I recommend these cards to all beginning music students, particularly budding pianists.

These flash cards are a good bang for the buck, and as such warrant greater than three stars. HOWEVER: the claim "Includes all notes, symbols and terms needed for the first two years of study on any musical instrument" is misleading. These cards are clearly made for piano students, and should be advertised as such. Buyers deserve to know this up front. Yes, the flash cards include symbols read by any musician. They also include symbols read ONLY by piano players. (Ain't nobody else's music got the bracket symbol for the piano pedal. No sir!) As a violin teacher, I hoped to use these cards to help my beginners learn to read the notes they will see in violin music. (Yes, there are flash cards made specifically for violin players learning to read their notes. They are more expensive, and do not include all the other symbols these cards have.) One of the first things I did was separate the bass clef notes out. as they do not apply to beginning violinists. I was pleased to see that (uh oh, almost) all the notes a beginning violinist would see on their music are represented. Almost. Unfortunately, there is one very important note missing: open G, the lowest note on the violin, is notated (in violin music) below the treble clef staff. In this set of flash cards it appears in the bass clef, as it would be read by a beginning piano player. I would just like to be told up front that I am buying a product geared to piano students. All that said, I am happy I made the purchase, as there is useful information, and the novelty factor for even one student is worth the price of admission!

Good flashcards for students studying music. I think these cards are best for students, not really for teachers and classroom games, the problem being that the front of the card will have the symbol or note and the back will give the definition. I often play memory games with students or have them choose a card, and I can't do that with these cards as they see either the answer or what they are picking up. They are a decent size and color coding is a nice touch. If you are a student who needs help at home, perhaps there is no parent who can read music etc, then these are a good way to test yourself and learn. For teachers using to play games, best to get ones with a plain backing.

Very thin paper. So flimsy, that when I hold the card up to test my daughter, she can see the answer right through the paper.

These are FANTASTIC. They will be perfect for our children as they study music this year.Yellow cards show each note on the staff. (G, B, D, F, A, etc.)White cards show vocabulary words like adagio, andante, moderato, allegro, dc al fine, etc.Green cards show all the music symbols like sharps, rests, flats, etc.Blue cards show instructions like key signatures & intervals.Pink cards show time signatures, and note/rest values (half note, whole note, quarter note, etc.)Quality card stock, well cut, no trash/lint, thick, can't see through them.

I purchased both Alfred and Hal Leonard flash cards for my teaching collection and I like both of them. However for personal preference I'll recommend to use the Alfred edition for your beginner students. Hal Leonard edition contains more musical terms and also include note reading, chords and rhythm exercises which I appreciate as well, but I think for the beginner students that just start to familiarize with the musical symbols, simple is better to build up the foundation. For long term usage or for teachers who travels to teach, perhaps laminating flash cards will help to protect the cards (just a personal preference and I know I'm ocd). Other than that it is a great tool to include in every music teacher's library.Attached is the index of the flash cards.

This is a good set. The cards are thick and sturdy and will last a long time if we're responsible with them and put them away each time. My child is a violin student, so there and many cards she won't need, but it's easy enough to separate them out. There are only two problems I see so far. One, is that they don't come in a box. There is a wrap-around card with a rubber band to keep them together. This problem is easily fixed by telling the child to carry them carefully. The second problem is that it's missing sixteenth notes. It only goes down to eighth notes, but sixteenth notes are definitely needed for beginning violin students. I still do recommend this set for violin students, but just realize that it's not quite complete.
