#638 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This novel was a little predictable, but I like the main character and the writing style of the author. I was a bit disappointed in the ending and was hoping for a different outcome, but in hind-sight I guess it was appropriate. This novel has two story lines, which I liked, but it seemed to get in the way of what appears to be the main story line. I do like how the author incorporated aspects of the previous novels and in this story it calls the reader back to those scenes. I like that because, while at the time they seemed incidental, they are pivotal to the stories in this novel.

This book is pretty good as far as your basic crime novels go, but there is a gaping hole in the plot that I couldn't get past. The premise is that a serial killer is targeting women, but not sexually assaulting them as would be expected. All of the victims are noted to have had no signs of having sexual contact within 72 hours of the attack in order to make it clear that this is not part of the killer's MO. But in order to frame other suspects, it is also said that the killer specifically makes his move *right after* the women have been with other men that they were intimate with, usually within the hour. So they absolutely would have shown signs of sexual activity and the detectives wouldn't have been able to say until the truth came out that it wasn't with the killer. You can't have it both ways! Not sure if the author didn't put this together or was just hoping no one else would just because it served different aspects of the story for both contradictory ideas to be true.So the book was good for mindless entertainment, but I get annoyed when there are glaring inconsistencies like this.

Better written than the first book, though frequent mentions here of a mysterious absence from Seattle, for the trial in that first Tracy Crosswhite adventure, are rather clunky. Surely the northern Cascades region, (Leavenwirth, Chelan, etc), is not so far from Seattle that a major absence from the SPD would have been required. It's almost like she had to take time out for a trip to Mars!As mentioned in my review of the first book, the author's use of the New York Ital/English term "couple days" is far more frequently thrown around here and becomes very annoying, very quickly. Outside NYC, pretty much the whole rest of the English-speaking world says "a couple of days".Another quibble here is that towards the end, THE END was clearly in sight, at least as far as the author was concerned. What suspense had been building was suddenly discarded for a mad rush to get to the big reveal. No exploration of Tracy's reduced duties, no further exploration of Nolasco's activities in this time - just a sudden jump to WHAM-BAM-IT-MUST-BE-THIS-GUY-GUNS-DRAWN-SHOWDOWN.There are decent stories in these two books, and they'd both have been considerably improved on with an editor not afraid to use the red pen.

Robert Dugoni lays all his talent on the line in this second book in the Tracy Crosswhite series. It's obvious he's an exceptionally gifted writer and no "one-hit wonder". Sequels or ongoing series often loose some momentum after the introductory story but definitely NOT in this case. This story may not be as emotionally charged as the first but I think that's based on the plot line rather than any weakness on the part of Mr. Dugoni. This is another well crafted work of fiction with deftly created, well defined characters, a complex storyline that keeps the reader intrigued throughout, and enough twists and turns to qualify as an amusement park roller coaster! The end is just as strong as the beginning and the ride doesn't slow down for a minute. So settle in with your beverage of choice, a comfortable chair with good lighting and dive into the world of crime that makes you forget that it's fiction and pulls you along this adventurous, exciting, frustrating and addictive series! It's fabulous!!

This novel starts with the heroine, Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite, giving a rookie shooting lessons so that she can pass her upcoming qualification test. Crosswhite and the rookie stay after the range closed. When finished, the rookie left. As Crosswhite policed the brass, she hears something and thinks she sees someone. After nothing more happening, she starts to leave and notices a hangman’s noose hanging on the fence. She immediately calls for backup. The reason for this response is that Crosswhite had led an investigation the death of an exotic dancer who was strangled with a noose. Before much progress could be made, she had to depart to go back to her childhood hometown for a hearing that led to the release of her sister’s convicted murderer (subject of the previous novel). While she was gone, her lieutenant sent the case to the Cold Case Unit. With the murder of another exotic dancer, the investigation becomes active again. From here, the novel takes off. The scope of the investigation quickly expands, and a Task Force is created with Crosswhite as the lead. She and her lieutenant have a rocky past, and it is not improving here. She lands herself in more hot water with the Office of Professional Accountability. The B-story continues from the first book, and the reader learns more about the deepening relationship between Crosswhite and Dan O’Leary. Also woven quite naturally into the story is the relationship of Crosswhite with her team members including some detail into the outside life and tribulations of Vic Fazzio. If this is the first novel of this series that you are considering to read, so not worry, adequate background is provided so that reading the first novel is not a requirement. As for language, there were only two F-bomb and a few lesser vulgar terms. There was not any graphic sex. The violence was all described in the past tense and in the context of the investigation except for one scene where the crime was described as it happened but the scene was more psychological vice gruesome. I do not believe that there is anything in these categories that would stop enjoyment in reading this novel. The only issue that I had with this novel is not with the novel itself but with its cover. The murder weapon was a hangman’s noose tied with synthetic fiber that had left or Z twist. The knot on the book’s cover illustration appears to be a Stevedore’s stopper knot tied with a natural fiber that has a right or S twist. Why is the cover illustration so different from the murder weapon?Overall, this novel like other novels of this series, this is the fourth that I have read, captured my interest. I found myself reading late into the night because I could not put this novel down. I did not have any issues with the novel itself. Overall, I rate this novel with five stars. If you like this series, do not miss this one.

Read it in one sitting! Great book. Interestingly weaves a narrative account of facts and an investigative-feel as Crowe takes you through the maddening case. There's no way you read this book and remain unmoved by what Emmett Till and his mother, Mrs. Till Bradley, endured. Appropriate for my approaching grade-level Freshmen readers, though it's actually geared for Middle School the content just seemed too heavy for me to think the younger age group is appropriate.

I have used this text for several years in my 9th LA class as part of a Civil Rights Unit. My students stay engaged from the beginning to the end, and the text challenges their reading comprehension and their empathy. A must read...Lest we forget!!!

I was born about three months after Emmett was. I remember hearing about his murder at 14. I, too, was 14 and was two hours north in Memphis. Every white person in the U.S. needs to read this story. This is not ancient history, it happened in America in our time.

I enjoyed this book. It was well written, but don’t take my word for it because amazon considers my reviews biased

My son read this in school, and told me about it. Everyone needs to read this story.

This book was extremely well-written and knowledgeable about the tragic murder of Emmett Till. There was never a dull moment and it read just like a fictional book. Though, of course, the horrific killing of Till wasn’t fiction.

A tragic and horrendous story, and all true. Happened here in the USA. Very sad commentary on that era in our country's history. It is a famous incident in the civil rights story...very much one to read. The book is in excellent condition, the price was great. I would recommend this seller to others for sure.

School mandated book, was a good read

The subtitle of this book says it all. If you take nothing else away from this review recognize that. Anything I have to say after that is pretty meaningless by comparison. The Third World War goes on today. It's not a war in the traditional sense like WWI or II. During World War I and World War II our enemies were unable to cross the Atlantic or Pacific and strike mainland America. Like the attack on Pearl Harbor, 9/11 indicated that we were at war we just didn't know it yet. That war began before September 11, 2001 but that was the first major strike of the war. The Third World War isn't about ideology but about unfinished business in countries where the Soviets and the United States had interests, slights against other countries and religion.Steve Coll's excellent, well documented book GHOST WARS examines the events leading up to 9/11, how our policy enabled these horrible events to occur, the inability by U.S. analyst to see (or to have people in power listen to them)and miscalculations/lack of involvement in Afghanistan after the Soviet's pulled out allowed the Taliban to take power and isolate those that might have been our allies. In the process, bin Laden rose to power creating his the insidious network of suicide bombers all in pursuit of his jihad.Colon does an exceptional job of documenting how all this occurred. The research that Coll and Griff Witt did as the background to this fascinating but also terrifying story provides exhaustive detail on how policy makers could bungle the latest threat that the United States and the rest of the world face today.Coll begins his book going as far back as 1976 during the Carter administration and the seige on the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan and traces the roots of discontent that would bear deadly fruitation in 2001. He connects the dots showing how all of these steps from that seige to the bumbling invasion of Afghanistan and the U.S. support (and abandonment) of anti-Soviet guerrilla commanders in that country when brewed together with foreigners such as bin Laden creating the toxic soup of terrorist activity seen before and since that fateful date in 2001.Coll's book won the Pultizer Prize and is highly recommended for an exhaustive and fascinating glimpse into the pieces of the puzzle that, when put together, gave us a picture of the murder of innocents, destruction and evil. If politics is war by a different means, than so is terrorism.

interesting read that reinforces my strong conviction (after a 20 year career in the Army)-that NOTHING is ever as simple as portrayed in movies and on TV, which is how the average American views our world. I am disillusioned in our governments constant turmoil whenever the White House changes ownership. This book is a beautiful accounting of bureaucratic morass.

Well written with tons of extreme detail. Coll knows his stuff and puts things into perspective very eloquently. Certainly an interesting read. I had to finish it, but slows to a crawl at points so was tough to continue at times. Did not have me looking forward to next page and chapter like other non fiction books I have read. It read like a history book. Other writers can make history feel more exciting. This is a matter of fact account with no style to speak of in my opinion.

Found this well constructed and deeply sourced. There were no apparent gaps in the connected dots and most connections made solid sense. The path to 9/11 was through these pages in great detail.

Well researched book into the unseen world and activities of American spies and military in Afghanistan and Pakistan. For those who have desire to understand the key role secret missions play in America's foreign policy this is the book for you. The writer goes beyond media sound bites and facetious political theatre in Washington to excavate the real reasons why America is on Afghanistan and may I add how Bin Laden became such a force. For those who have never understood why the USA continues to dance with the terrorist supporting Pakistani regimes, this a good primer. The author traces the relationship between the USA and dubious characters and dictators from the 1960s through 911 to the present time. Defintely recommend.

Very detailed analysis on CIA activity in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and Washington's often confusing policy on Central Asia. Coll precisely pointed out that some of our "allies", like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, are definitely less reliable and trustworthy than some claimed. This book serves a warning to statesmen on foreign policy.

I gave this book a solid 4 stars because the subject is so interesting and it keeps you clued to the pages all the way to the last few pages. Instead of ending in a giant crescendo of planes flying into the twin towers, it just winds down into anti climatic ending that leaves you feeling very unfulfilled and wishing for more. I hate to make the comparison to a romantic interlude that ends with a huge disappointment but I can't think of a better one. All thru the book you are seeing the connections come together and know where they will eventually end and the closer you get the more exciting it becomes and then finally when you're ready for the ultimate climax, the author simply walks away, leaving the reader wondering what the heck just happened. But this is just a minor complaint, the book itself is wonderfully written and researched and would have been an easy 5 star book had it not ended too soon. All in all, I'm glad I bought this book and recommend it to others.

Review

"This book is a great guide for how to understand how a new type of librarian, the data librarian, fits into the bigger library picture. Eric O. Johnson pulls back the cover to show us the detailed mechanics of data librarianship and working with data. From the administrator who needs to write an effective job description to hire a data librarian, to subject librarians who find themselves trying to address data issues for their research community, to the student who wants to know more about this exciting new field, this book covers it all." (Amy Koshoffer, Science Informationist, University of Cincinnati)"Johnson's Working as a Data Librarian is a must read for MLIS students, established librarians looking to update their skill set, and library administrators who want their libraries to remain relevant in the ever-changing world of academia. Johnson breaks down the complex issues revolving around data librarianship into concise and easy-to-understand chapters. This resource would have been immensely helpful when I started out as an institutional repository manager." (Jane S. Wildermuth, Head, Digital Initiatives and Repository Services, Wright State University)
