He also brings the background and personality of the key players into his work. Mao, Chiang, Madam Chiang, Truman, Stalin, Acheson as the main players on this world stage as well as many secondary players. He does a remarkable job demonstrating the difference between the seemingly unstoppable political and revolutionary forces and those that could have been altered had there been different players in their respective power roles. Author could have researched more thoroughly, particularly among Rep. Walter H. Judd papers as he was less than accurate in Judy's role and motives. I knew Judd well. Also he all but ignored the roles of the anti-Chiang and pro-MaoState department and others influencing our government against Chiang Kai-shek. No development of the "commies are just agrarian reformers" campaign. The author does a disservice to history and what happened to China. It was a watershed for China, but the author neglected to indicate how great a positive change could have come if we hadn't let down our WWII ally. Among some positive developments almost surely been no Viet Man war. No North Korea. No communizing of Cambodia. No Chinese attempt to control huge casts of sea areas. Taiwan development and prosperity could have been mainland China's decades earlier without the cultural revolution, etc, which were the true gifts of Mao and Truman to the world.

Most history books paint the past in broad strokes, covering dozens or hundreds of years. Yet some of the most engaging works drill down into the events of a particular time or place. Kevin Peraino has brilliantly used that approach inÂ A Force So Swift: Mao, Truman, and the Birth of Modern China, 1949.Â By focusing on the events of a single year, and concentrating on just ten key individual players in the drama, Peraino has brought back to life the complex circumstances surrounding one of the seminal events of the 20th Century. As Peraino notes, "Anxious Chinese officials see today's American policy as a sequel to the containment strategy hatched in 1949."1949 was a fateful year in many ways. The year witnessed the growth of the Red Scare, the formation of NATO, the opening run of Death of a Salesman, the resignation and suicide of Defense Secretary James Forrestal, the formation of the Council of Europe, the trials of Alger Hiss, the publication of 1984, the first test of a nuclear bomb by the Soviet Union, and the formation of East and West Germany. Every one of these events figures in the background of Peraino's chronicle of the year.I was barely conscious of the wider world in 1949. After all, I was just eight years old. But every one of the ten individuals Peraino follows through that fateful year conjures up memories for me. Admittedly, my reading of history has a lot to do with that. But all ten of the people profiled in A Force So Swift were active for years after 1949, and I became familiar with them as the years went by. Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson,Â Congressman Walter Judd (R-Minnesota), and British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin all played oversized roles in the events of 1949 but are less well known today. Johnson and Judd were central figures in the China Lobby that pressured Truman. Bevin engineered Britain's recognition of Red China in defiance of US wishes.The central drama illuminated inÂ A Force So SwiftÂ is the clash between Acheson and the China Lobby led byÂ Madame Chiang Kai-Shek for President Truman's attention. The debate centered on whether the United States should continue to support the Nationalist forces led byÂ Chiang Kai-Shek as they fell apart in the face of continuing Communist victories. Acheson was firmly opposed. Throughout the year, Truman leaned toward Acheson's position, but saying no became progressively more difficult as the year unfolded. ("To court Mao or to confront him? Truman did not really want to do either.") The public relations campaign whipped up by the China Lobby was ferocious, and political pressure from Congress and the Pentagon was daunting. ("The congressional leadership was unanimously opposed to formally halting shipments" of money and arms to Chiang.) Even before Mao declared the formation of the People's Republic on October 1, 1949, Acheson and Truman were convinced Red China was a fait accompli, and they hoped that by refraining from overt attacks on Mao's forces that a split would eventually emerge between China and the Soviet Union.Â Their opponents refused to accept reality. History shows Truman and Acheson were correct."Ultimately the legacy of 1949," Peraino writes, "in some cases, despite Acheson's best efforts, had included thirty years of nonrecognition of Communist China, a decades-long U.S. commitment to Taiwan, and the wars in Korea and Vietnam."Kevin PerainoÂ is an American journalist who has written for many leading publications. This is a very cute book. The story is creative and holds my nearly 3 year old grandson's attention from cover to cover. My wife and I got a kick out of it too. The pictures are good as well. Much younger kids may not quite appreciate it, but three and four year olds will enjoy it, and even five and six year olds. Seven and eight may be pushing it, but even they may get a kick out of a wild ride with Grandma behind the wheel.

The book deals with a business owned by grandma, and the sons drive the garbage trucks. However, both sons called in sick on the same day so grandma does what she has to do, runs the route herself. In the process, she picks up enough extra items on her garbage truck from her route, rose bushes, clothes line, etc. that she wins the parade she accidentally enters. A fun book for 2-3 yr. old

Cute book. My 2 year old Grandson is obsessed with watching the garbage & recycling truck, so ...what better than Grandma driving the garbage truck? Illustrations are beautiful. Read this book to some 3rd graders - 5th graders and they loved it.

Bought this book for my 3 year old grandson who loves garbage trucks. As a matter of fact, he was a garbage truck or Halloween.So I thought this book was appropriate for him.....and it was!!!

Such a cute and funny book! I bought this for my niece and nephew to read with their Grandma, and they have asked Gram to read it so many times now! The whole family got a kick out of this one, because Grandma saves the day!

Purchased for my Grandson's birthday to accompany his garbage truck pj's. His birthday is in December so he has not seen the book yet. I have looked through it and am sure he will love having it read to him

My son is 3 and loves garbage trucks so I thought it would be funny for him to read about a Grandma driving a garbage truck. The story isn't very interesting and not that humorous...and he really doesn't understand the concept of it so he doesn't ask us to read it to him. Maybe a 4 or 5 year old would like it? The illustrations are really nice. I probably should have checked it out at the library first before buying it.

I bought this for my twin nephews (age 3) for Christmas and they absolutely LOVED it!! I read it to them three or four times the day they got it! It's a funny book and one to act silly when reading (making screeching sounds from the garbage truck or swerving back and forth). I would highly recommend this book! Came quickly and as expected.

Going to return this. The details are amazing and it's great if you've never seen better reproductions. But it's missing some of my favorite scenes and distorts others so badly (see photos where the book seem swallows the subjects of the photos)... Also, the colors are really dull compared to what they should look like. WHO OKAYED THIS??? Yes, some scenes and details are reproduced beautifully, but why would SO many be disfiguringly split down the middle?

Book is small in dimensions, but contains new photographs of the Sistine Chapel with great details of the frescoes, which you would not find in any other book. I agree with previous comment that some details are distorted,especially those that appear on the inner edge of the pages. However that is common for every book on art with large reproductions. There is older, larger format book ISBN-10: 8882710386 (same author), but there are much fewer details.

I was somewhat disappointed in this book. It is not quite detailed and comprehensive enough to be considered a reference for all the suspension modifications that are possible, or why you should choose one over the other. There is a decent discussion of basic concepts in suspension kinematics and how to relate those ideas to observable attributes of you car. There is a short section on tuning strategies that I wish was longer. And then there is a lot of space devoted to discussion of particular vendor's solutions; with a thinly disguised emphasis on the author's own company's products, and those of a few others; but, without a comprehensive index of everything that is available. To his credit, the author states explicitly that he has not set out to write that kind of book -- he just wants to write something the average car guy can access. His avoidance of engineering jargon is successful, but every time he gets close to making a general conclusion that might be useful and actually teach something to the average car guy, he backs off and invokes the I-am-a-suspension-guru-and-you-should-just-believe-me attitude so common in the popular automotive press. The result is an unsatisfying stew of inconsistently-justified, anecdotal solutions for particular cars (mostly GM) that adds little to the advertiser-driven product hype that can be found in any number of specialty magazines. Not a total waste of money... but that's mostly because it didn't cost that much.

Lots of good information, I'm quite knowledgeable about most things automotive and also understand how much manipulation the publishers place on an author, that said, there's a lot of good, basic discussion on muscle car suspension dynamics.

This book does a good job of going over the majority of upgrades to positively impact handling on classic cars. The book gives good insight into what is in the market, and also explains how these parts can be used to provide resolution to problems with the stock suspension. The book does dive into some of the aspects of how to determine suspension geometry, but is not so involved that you need to pull your engineers cap on to understand. There are also section specifically dedicated to the three major domestic car manufacturers, which will help in building a game plan of developing your own suspension for your classic car. The book did not really go into a great detail about the benefits of aftermarket frames for full frame cars such as the GM A-body cars, but does give enough information to help guide the reader in the types of questions to ask when considering the benefits of such an endeavor.

If you're building a "Pro-Touring" type muscle car - and ESPECIALLY if it's a GM A-Body car (though other cars are also addressed here) then this book should be required reading before you ever start. I've worked with the author directly and used many of the recommendations found in this book. The result is a 1966 Pontiac that has demonstrated an ability to outhandle and outperform new Corvettes, Mustangs and Camaros. Not a wild claim - these are at events that are well run, timed and documented. The proof is there, and this book helps to provide the foundation for understanding how to plan your build - whether you just want to make driving your muscle car more pleasant, or if you want to do what I did and hammer the car on open road racing courses and autocross courses.

Written so that anyone with decent mechanical ability can understand steering geometry and suspension. Mark explains the unsafe and inherent steering, and suspension design flaws of older muscle cars. He then explains in detail how to correct the poor design issues using parts that are currently available in the market place right now. If you own a Chevy A-body this book is worth every penny. The 66, 67 Chevelle is really covered well. Mark also covers other GM makes such as the GM G-body years, 81 to 88, and the GM 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen. F-bodies. Also covered in the book are Ford Fox Bodies 74 to 93, and Mopar muscle cars.Learn about Front End Geometry, Rear Suspension Geometry, Springs, Rates and Shocks. Aftermarket A-Arms, Sway Bars, Wheels, and Tires. It will also help you to understand what is required to achieve the stance you have been looking for in your car.I recommend this book for anyone who is building a Resto-Mod or a Pro Touring car. This book can also help owners who just want to update their old cars so that they ride, and steer better, with improved safety.

Just finished reading the book, I did skip the chassis specific tips since my project isn't one of them, but found it very well written and helpful. The author does a good job sticking to the point, he doesn't go overboard on theory or minute details when not necessary. Other chassis specific books seem to be solely race oriented this book offers many tips on making older cars streetable as well as corner carvers. I have read several other books about chassis and suspension building and found this one to be by far the easiest to comprehend. The fact that the book was written recently means you are getting up to date information.I would definetely recommend for someone starting a car project where suspension modifications will be made.

Great read. It will help explain a lot more than what you need to know to help understand how the suspension works.

A lot of good information. My only complaint is the illustrations are not done well at all. In the basic explanations of the suspension geometries the illustrations are on other pages.

About the Author

Joi Barrios holds a Ph.D. in Filipino Literature from the University of the Philippines. She serves as a Lecturer teaching Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of California, Berkeley while on leave as an Associate Professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). Barrios has won fourteen national literary awards and, for her contributions to literature, was among the 100 women chosen as Weavers of History for the Philippine Centennial Celebration. This is a good book for beginners. It throws you right into learning the language. It's more like a workbook, where you learn phrases and more while also doing fill in the blank. I would prefer a more step-by-step approach, meaning they start off with the alphabet, numbers, characters, etc, yet this book is the opposite approach. It immerses you right away. A DVD with mp3s is included. I haven't been able to get the DVD to work on Windows 10 yet, but I will try more options to make it work. Check this out if you're new to the language.

My wife is Filipino so she's helping me learn.

This is a beginners book...but it starts the student in learning conversations instead of simple words and building up to sentences or thoughts. The CD that come with the book was somewhat helpful, again it immerses the reader in conversation instead of basic words to form sentences. But it was helpful in my needs. I think there should be a book designed for those not ready to have conversations but to learn words then simple sentences.

Book does a very poor job at explaining the structure of the language. Multiple typos throughout, shows clear lack of editing. Expects you to infer grammar rules and syntax immediately without more than one example. Layout of lessons are also messy. Overall terrible and not for beginners.

Ignoring the fact that they forgot to include Appendix 3 and 4 totally (though listing it in the TOC), I find the style not to my liking. Though it suggests that after finishing a chapter that you now know how to use possessive pronuns, in truth you can (at most) say one or two cardboard phrases with little understanding about 'why' you are saying it that way (or understanding any other way of expressing the same).

The cd lost me about the 5th page, it started speaking about something else there but i couldnt find it. So CD wasnt really good, but goi g through the book alone and googling the pronunciation of the words, help just as well.

I'm giving this book four stars because it contains most of the things needed to learn Tagalog. Yet as always it is advised you use multiple resources to learn a language. Later on I shall buy a Tagalog Dictionary to cross reference what I have learned. The previous negative reviews turned me off a bit from this title however I brought it quite some time ago (February 2012). The audio is there indeed. You need to pause and listen. I suppose it's a bit like Pimsleur. I may purchase Elementary Tagalog (by the same publishing company) depending on if it's more in depth with vocabulary and I feel there's more still left to learn.

The book was very nice, and comprehensive, lots of pictures and a good layout.

What a beautiful book! The photography really provides a great sense of place and the book feels like a trip across the country without ever leaving home. The historical tidbits are great reads and there is an incredible amount of content. The recipes are fun, crowd pleasing, classic!
