I have been using this book in Kindle rental format for my CNA class this semester. I'm glad I rented it - my school is switching to a different book after this semester, so they wouldn't have considered buying them back. The instructor mentioned some people there teaching the class find the book needlessly verbose - just way more information than necessary.It was a very affordable option as a rental though, especially through ebook. I carry an ipad with me, so I can work on homework no matter where I am without having to haul textbooks around. My only issue is that a handful of pictures are missing throughout the book in the ebook version. It's very rare, but it was unexpected and a little misleading to say "This kindle book looks just like the printed book." Yes, for 99% of the book it is like the printed book, but no, it's not JUST like the printed book.Normally the image comes with a figure number and a description of the image, but if the picture is missing, so is the caption. There's just a large gray box that says, "Image not available due to copyright restrictions." It's very uncommon and I seem to be getting by without them, but it would have been nice to get some kind of warning - especially if thinking about owning a permanent copy of the ebook. Really, they should have at least kept the caption too just so you had more of an idea of what the image might be of. The text usually does refer to the image too, so you at least have that, but the caption often gives a little more information or (in the case of procedural images) brief instruction.You cannot print pages through Kindle. You can use the print screen button to capture pages in the Kindle for PC version and paste them into image editors, documents, etc though. I usually put them in paint real quick first just to crop off anything else that was on my computer screen. I only use that when I do the review questions at the end of the homework now, so I have the questions with me if I want to look over/study off them later.

I bought this for my niece that lives in the Caribbean. She should get it this week. It's what she needs and even though it's not New, it's in very good condition and looks New. Online it said hardcover but it's not which is totally fine. My niece was happy to hear that I was able to get at an affordable price as she really needs it. New runs pretty expensive.

Something is wrong here or maybe i messed up. I wanted the tex book..What i got was sheets with questions and lines to accommodates answers. Total waste of my money. I have been looking at the Pics of the covers for both tex book and what i got and i cant see the difference. Totally dissapointed.

I bought this book in "good" condition. It had been well used before I got it but was still in good condition. It was worth the money I spent and I would recommend it to anyone who is learning the skills for a nursing asst or home health aid. It has all the info you need except for the real life compassion and performance to be a great aid.

Made class more bearable. It simplifies technical stuff. The CD that comes with it will help you prepare for the quizzes and tests you will eventually take. It's a solid book, full of diagrams, pictures and thorough explanations.

I purchased this for a student of mine who likes to write music, I think he will enjoy having some nice blank staff music for his ideas. The lines are pretty small though, I wish they were spaced out more for a young child.

Price seemed fair, I haven't used it as yet, figured I would write out the drum music to some of the more difficult songs to play :)

Lines too small and close together.Otherwise great quality.

The pages aren't perforated, so you can't rip pages out. Not especially great if you're using it for theory assignments.

Product is perfect. Just as advertised.

Trying to write in this book is difficult due to tiny lines. Clean book just the lines are way too small for my liking.

Product is exactly as described — quality is fine. But I'd recommend a spiral-bound notebook with slightly larger lines instead.

I had been doing Hospice care as a volunteer for a few years when I took a break, thinking this will be my time to learn comedy again! Well, my sister became deathly ill and needed three brain surgeries so I was back doing bedside service…I’m not complaining at all, in fact, I’m greatly appreciative that I wasn’t working at the time so I could help her. I’m now taking a Master Class on Comedy, by Steve Martin, which reminded me of this book. So I read it!What does this have to do with Steve Martin’s book? Comedy is born out of life’s tragedies and trauma’s; they force us to become stronger and more resilient, and over time - look at things - in a sometimes disturbing humorous light.Steve’s book was enlightening and uplifting, from learning about his triumphs and struggles- in all that he endured to become the comic, and man he is today. I admire him greatly! The biggest obstacle and accomplishment when reading this, and I’d think he’d agree, was after obtaining a certain amount of respect, fame, and fortune, and having written “Lapin Agile” a play set in 1905 about the hypothetical meeting of Picasso and Einstein – Steve returned home. He earned the respect of love of his father, and basked in the love of his mother and sister; taking delight in their stories of forgotten anecdotes. There isn’t any greater gift in life than that!If you desire to be a comic/entertainer I highly recommend reading this book. It will not only inspire you, but offer you an introspective look at what and why you wish to be a comic. Comedy is a journey - such is life, and what better way to view it than in this humorous biography, “Born Standing Up.”

There are few people out there who have not heard of Steve Martin. Many know him from his famous movies or appearances on Saturday Night Live. Born Standing up is the story of Martin’s previous life as a standup comedian. He tells the story of growing up working at magic shops, performing skits at empty bars, and running out of money not once, but several times.I leave a 3-star review mainly because I felt that I was left with a lot of unanswered questions. The book is quite short for a memoir and at the end, I felt that I was just getting started. Martin tells the story of his childhood and the early years of his standup career well, but I personally feel like this book is an unfinished product. It felt as if there were intentions to write a comprehensive memoir at some point, but the publishing deadline arrived and the book was shipped as is.Despite my critical review, I would say the book is fully worth the read. It is one of those books you have to sit down and digest all at once and enjoy entering the mind of the man who invented an entirely new version of standup comedy.

Steve Martin doesn't really give us an autobiography — engaging in the public soul searching and detailed exposition of oneself that makes a good autobiography is not in his character. He's much too private a person (at least that much of his personality comes across in this book). Instead, he gives us an overview of how he became famous, what he became famous for, and his reactions to both. There is some introspection, and enough personal reflection to connect us to Steve ... Martin ... but not a whole lot of detail. The question is, do we really need more? The author's goal for this book wasn't to tell his life story; it was to tell his early career story, which, to be sure, is impossible without some of the other stuff. Overall, I think, he gives us just enough of the personal to understand the professional, and enough of the professional to see how he got so famous. He doesn't deal with his career in movies, or his other accomplishments. It is strictly about his emergence as the biggest name in stand-up comedy. It is, therefore, an easy, gentle, reassuring read, bound to please his biggest fans, like me, and, yet, leave them wanting more. That's show biz for you.

Before that, he was an opening act at concerts. Before that, like many comedians, he struggled, doing five shows a day for twelve years. He gives insights into how family dynamics drove him into his craft, and what it was like to discover his unique creative voice.It's well-written, which is something I'm especially appreciative of lately. I recently read a book by another comic that was poorly-written. I finished it because I was interested in that person's story, but the stink crept into my own writing, and it took a few days of practice to shake it.

Disclaimer: I LOVE Steve Martin. I read this expecting to love it and was not disappointed. It was even more than I expected. A private man courageously opens up about his origins, including his troubled family relationships. He shares his magician techniques (to a point), notes on comic performances, BUNCHES of other insightful stuff. It is a fascinating exploration that he refers to as a biography rather than an autobiography for reasons that you will understand once you read it--and please do. A personal note--I saw him in an arena setting when I was a teenager and had no idea that he'd reached a point in his standup career that was not...rewarding. I'm still grateful that I got to see him in his standup career.

It doesn't disappoint as its better than a teacher. the information is presented in a clear, coherent and easy to understand form. ample examples and a light-hearted approach. Its enjoyable reading and the little quizzes really engage my interest. this is a powerful tool for understanding human behavior and this author is credible as a master in her field

Ms. Phillips- Fein regards the pre 1975 New York City {NYC} as the liberal beacon of light in the U.S.A. for providing a plethora of services for its citizens that from the mid 1960's it could no longer afford but nevertheless continued to provide and even increasing the funding for many of them.The impression one gets from her narrative is that somehow the city should have continued to provide them despite facing increased and persistent budget shortfalls from the mid 1960's to the near Chapter 11 bankruptcy of 1975 - 76 and the continued budget shortfalls {despite the eventual Federal Bailout} right thru 1981- 82. The sheer political folly, fiscal irresponsibility and willful ignorance of facts of Mayors Robert Wagner, John Lindsey and Abe Beame and their fiscal comptrollers Abe Beame {under Wagner and Lindsay} and Jay Goldin are dispassionately detailed. The picture presented of them is that of myopic career politicians absolutely refusing to face that the reality of major population loss {700,000 + overwhelmingly the middle class}, declining revenues {despite higher & higher taxes !} a massively increased short and long term debt load and worrying more about being reelected which made any fiscal retrenchment or the cutting of services essentially impossible for them to contemplate. AND YET her sympathy seems to lean towards these same irresponsible leaders who recklessly borrowed money, overstated revenue projections and used every fiscal gimmick under the sun not to cut services - a very strange viewpoint !!!Mayor Abraham Beame comes off particularly poorly - he is presented by the author as an intellectual lightweight {both as comptroller and Mayor !!} an inept, blinkered and tone deaf old man who is PETULANT and ANNOYED that by the spring of 1975 the budget numbers cannot be fudged or manipulated any more, the banks have realized this and refused to fund / rollover any new N.Y.C. short term debt and that a fiscal reckoning has finally hit the fan !! He truly believed then and later that somehow the subsequent deep budget cuts for services should have and could have been avoided but how that would have been accomplished is not clearly defined BECAUSE he simply refused to believe that throwing more money out of the window than was being taken in thru the door truly mattered and that someone would {and should have} rode to the rescue for NYC's fiscal woes.Governor Hugh Carey and the NYC Municipal Unions along with the formation of the Municiple Assistance Corporation {MAC} are the unsung hero's of NYC avoiding the disgrace of bankruptcy. Their forced cooperation however reluctant and ad- hoc saved the city from immeadiate Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1975-76 giving it the breathing room to survive to fight another day. President Gerald Ford was 100 % right in his assessment of the fiscal incompetence, reckless overspending and over borrowing by the NYC liberal political establishment BUT only a small town political hack like President Ford would have considered allowing the largest city in the U.S.A. to go bankrupt and not think that the ramifications of that bankruptcy would not be an economic and political world shaking event. Despite being technically right in his rigid economic and moral terms President Ford was clearly wrong in the bigger overall picture and he was roundly criticized at home and abroad for his stance and rightly so. But to his credit, he was a major catalyst in forcing NYC to adjust its thinking and its priorities in order to get the federal bailout money it so desperately needed. In my opinion this would never have happened had he just forked over the bucks with no questions asked ! That President Ford was in a tough spot with his own reelection issues cannot be disputed.NYC facing bankruptcy in 1975 is an early prime example of the "too big to fail" syndrome that we would subsequently see and feel in gigantic detail during the 2007-2009 financial meltdown. The author 's chapters on how ordinary New York City citizens fought against the closing of schools, hospitals and fire houses in individual neighborhoods are lovingly detailed but they are beside the point however inspiring their stories may be. By 1975 NYC was in a deep decline economically, spiritually and morally as the July 1977 power failure / blackout would clearly highlight as the blackout brought out the worst in its Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The Wanton, Unashamed, Brazen Looting and Destruction of commercial stores within their own communities, many of them owned by their neighbors and friends was made much worse by the fact that subsequently a significant percentage of the NYC media, political establishment, religious leaders and the national media would find reasons to excuse and even justify this orgy of criminal behavior, rioting, arson, theft and destruction. These were "the chickens coming home to roost" for the post 1975 NYC liberal establishment to ponder and digest. In my opinion the author leans toward having far more empathy for the looters than for those who were robbed and burned out of their business's and jobs. That bone and muscle were cut along with with the fat from NYC budgets for all city services from June 1975 on cannot be denied nor can the pain that these cuts would cause but they CAN BE EXCUSED because in order to save the city from the disgrace and even worse service cuts that filing for Chapter 11 would have entailed - what would have been the alternatives given the political realities of that time ?Two additional books to read in on the policies and players that brought NYC to it's 1975 catastrophe are "The Ungovernable City" by Vincent Cannato - a devastating revelation of limosene liberal John Lindsay's disastrous tenure as the NYC "Fun City" Mayor from 1965-73 and "The Streets were Paved with Gold" by Ken Auletta - a contemporary 1970's look at the fiscal crisis that highlights the mindset and disastrous descision making of NYC elected officials and in it he chronicles one particular incident that in 2018 seems almost surreal. Mr. Auletta describes a scene where Mayor Beame and Comptroller Goldin are in an darkened office late at night with an Albanian bookkeeper wearing a green eye shade poring over a ledger giving them the numbers of the what the cities on hand cash and liabilities are AND this bookkeeper was the only person that had the institutional knowledge to tell the Mayor and Comptroller of the largest city in the U.S.A. with a budget of 10's of billions of dollars where they stood financially. What a stinging indictment this is of the haphazard, crude and slipshod manner on how the NYC municipal government was monitoring and maintaining its fiscal budget.This book is an informative and concise read with the authors presentation of the key players, power brokers, how the MAC came to be and would function, the individual personnel drama's, how Chapter 11 was avoided and how NYC was radically transformed by all this drama is presented via a entertaining and easy flowing narrative. I give this book 4 stars - Recommended.

Excellent read. For a somewhat technical subject matter, it is a nice, easy, quick read that uses the fiscal crisis to frame a larger discussion about the role of government in social issues. A great history but also thought provoking on the very current issue of underfunded public pensions.

An excellent study in public policy and economic history of the United States of the 1970s. The author makes a great characterization of the cultural, political and economic aspects that a fiscal crisis can have on a city. Kim Phillips-Fein is obviously a liberal ideologically, which can be felt on who she blames for the crisis, e.g. the bankers, elite etc.That said though, the book is excellent and an important contribution to the history and economics of public policy in the united states since the 1970s. Four stars.

This book cronichles the near bankruptcy of New York City in 1975. This doesn't sound like the kind of material that would keep somebody up late at night because they got so involved that they wanted to finish the chapter, and then the next chapter. That's what happened to me. What more can you ask of any book?

Excellent history of the budget crisis and 1970s era New York. Deeply referenced with an outstanding level of historical detail. Very effectively profiles the players who helped the city avert bankruptcy and their various backgrounds and philosophies. If you want to understand the birth and development of modern-day gilded-city NYC you should definitely read this book.

It’s a shame that Kim Phillips-Fein’s masterly Fear City hasn’t received the expansive recognition it so justly deserves. Here, she has followed up on her previous, astute economic account, Invisible Hands, with another painstakingly researched yet engagingly written book.Fear City ostensibly deals with NYC’s mid-1970’s fiscal crisis. Yet what makes it a notable work of history, is the author’s discerning analysis of the event and her lucid explanation of how it ultimately served as a model for the national austerity state that emerged from the crisis; one which has spread far beyond the confines of New York City (e.g., the impending, let-them-eat-cake tax cut for the wealthy, and a shredding of the social safety net that is likely to follow).As she eloquently notes in the book’s Epilogue, the sorry legacy of the crisis is that:"...the American economy…was remade…on completely different terms. The idea of using the state to remedy poverty and improve socialconditions has given way to the sense that doing so is simply too expensive…The inequality that characterizes our society today seems tobe accompanied by the constant sense that any hope for a better society, any notion of collective action, must be a pipe dream---irresponsible, impossible to afford.”We are all much poorer since the advent of austerity politics and resulting policy. Yet, readers of Fear City will be deeply enriched by Professor Phillips-Fein’s astute and absorbing narrative.

These are great insults if you are six or seven years old. Most have been around for years and are silly or stupid, NOT funny. No sophistication at all. Waste of money.

Most examples were crude and heavy-handed ( unless the intent is to start a fight ). Many are phrased in "redneck" fashion, which is both an insult toward rednecks and reveals the user's lack of finesse.

David,I'm sorry to say this, but if you don't do better on the next book, I'm breaking up with this series.Honestly, who CARES about any of this story line? I'm not going to spoil it for everyone, but I found this to be the most frustrating book I've read in ages. It's almost like you decided to write a crapload of stuff without ever getting to the meat of the issue ON PURPOSE! Seriously. The book should START with the last paragraph. That's what you've been building up to the last 9 books. Why muck around with the Marshall plan and the rest of the crap? Have you been hanging around George RR Martin and decided to torment your fan base? Please tell me you will publish the next book in just a week. Your editor should have spanked you!!! This is the fluff between the story.Sigh.

Nothing. Happens.Seriously, you could just skip to the last chapter and be ready for the next book. There were several weddings, a few funerals, some political machinations and upheavals, but in the end nothing happened. The final chapter in the book is the only one that couldn’t have been glossed over in a preface to the next tome.See, there needed to be some big enemy or evil plot that was fighting the good guys, but there wasn’t. It was just...people being people.Another criticism is that I got a bit tired of having noblewomen explain how they aren’t shocked by coarse language. It got boring. Or the overused metaphor that is an understatement that has to be thoroughly explained to be an understatement. It got repetitive.There was no plot. No driving force, except waiting for something to maybe happen that might not actually happen for another 80yrs if someone counted wrong.David Weber writes some great scenes. The emotions he can evoke with his words are deep. Some parts of this book have those moments.But it shouldn’t have been published like this. This was boring and pointless. The stories may have needed to be written, but they shouldn’t have been presented to us the way they were.If you are a long time fan, read it. The voice is there.If you like your reading to have a point? Your time is better spent elsewhere.

I keep thinking that I'm a glutton for punishment because I've found the last several Safehold books to be overstuffed with characters and plots I don't care about, and yet I keep reading because I'm invested in the core group.I'm pleased to say that I found myself skimming less of this book, though there's still some extensive sections in Harchong and Siddarmark that I didn't care as much about -- the Siddarmark sections, in particular, contain what felt like Economics 101 material.This book also spans the years 901 to 916, which means that a good deal more time is covered than in previous books (At The Sign Of Triumph takes place from 897 to 899), so of course Weber needs to remind you how old the various children are so that you can keep track of these things.Did I mention the children? There are multiple pregnancies and births during this book, and several marriages, proving Weber's (recent?) fascination with Babies Ever After. To go into more detail would be too spoileriffic for this review, but if you hated Honor Harrington's pregnancy, you'll probably hate at least one of the pregnancies in this book too.It's ambiguous as to whether Weber has another book planned in this series. The ending here could be a decent one for the series; it certainly provides more of a sense of resolution than many of the others. The religious schism, which came to a conclusion in the previous book, is wrapped up tidily here, but there are still politics and innovations yet to explore on Safehold. We certainly didn't get answers to some of the long-term questions posted, so count me among those tentatively hoping for more.As an aside, either the Kindle version was poorly edited or Weber's editor is truly asleep at the wheel. A character that appears in two different sections (and two sections only) has his name spelled differently in each section; there's another notable misspelling that stood out at me as I was reading it.

This was beyond bad. Endless chatter —and the repetitive banter between characters got old several books ago. Too many flat characters that seemed like clones of prior characters. The book just meandered aimlessly. The early books were good to brilliant. This one, I just started skimming after first 100 pages.

I've read and loved most of David Weber's books, especially Safehold series which is why I was so disappointed after reading this one. The plot is twisting all over the place, with side episodes that aim to provide adrenaline boost but have little to do with main plot. Instead of developing the main plotline further it gets even further diluted. The impression for the whole Safehold series feels like starting as superb wine which then got diluted by abundance of water and vinegar.
