"The Idea Writers offers an in-depth look at the state of copywriting and brand creativity in today's marketplace. With insight on creative process and campaign development from the industry's leading creative's, the book provides solid advice for copywriters at all levels. It also provides a detailed examination of the changes that have completely remade the advertising industry, and is a useful guide for anyone looking to understand brand creativity today." - Advertising Age "Teresa Iezzi aims to appeal to professional ad writers and those aspiring to their ranks. Both groups might profit from a look at The Idea Writers. Behind the cheeky tone and insider references is a useful guide to navigating in the digital wilds of online marketing and promotion." - The Wall Street Journal"Recommended" - Choice The experts on copywriting: "There is no point making advertising that is better than other advertising; that is not your competitor for people's time. You are up against all of the things they want to watch and read, the content they are seeking out." - Dave Bedwood, creative director and co-founder of U.K. digital agency Lean Mean Fighting Machine. "It's one of the things that hasn't changed - finding that magic moment when you've come up with the insight that will make people think, I've thought of that a hundred times but I never thought of saying it like that. It's that moment of connection where people think there's a kindred spirit out there." - Bill Wright, ECD, Crispin Porter + Bogusky "Unlike traditional storytelling where you complete the thing and you put it out there, it's a living thing that requires ongoing curation and involvement, on the part of storytellers and participants." - Ty Montague, former chief creative officer, JWT, founder of Co"I highly recommend it. It's the first book I've seen that thinks through what passes for 'rules' in the new digital world." - Luke Sullivan, author of Hey Whipple, Squeeze This: A Guide to Creating Great Advertising

The author "interviewed over 50 copywriters and professionals for this book" and their quotes alone are highly valuable, like:"When you sit down to do an ad, you're competing with every brand out there." Luke Sullivan"I think, in general, people don't buy products, they buy stories." Ty Montague"We are an industry built on assumptions that no longer exist today." David DrogaLayered on top of these missives are some interesting case studies including the Pepsi Refresh Challenge (the company diverted its Superbowl budget to this effort), DDB's Fun Theory for Volkswagen, BMW Films, and Subservient Chicken (which is kept alive by the ad industry not consumer recollection). The book also covers the thinking of the greats including Bernbach, Reeves, and Burnett. But it is David Ogilvy who is most interesting here for his views on copywriting and creativity.I enjoyed parts of the book as it is a collection of quotes, cases and thoughts strung together under the central theme that advertising must have a differentiating insight. The insight (or hope) I took away from The Idea Writers is summed in this passage, "When DDB started creating ads like "Lemon", it was called the creative revolution. But that description is an overstatement. The real revolution is happening now."

I feel as though I've been spinning my wheels a bit, picking up the "classics" of copywriting and advertising books, looking for foundation principles.Teresa combines classic principles with new ideology that applies to the advertising space in 2016. You get a good summation of advertising history, a list of the greats, some of their best quotes and contributions, as well as how copywriting has changed (and yet, fundamentally remains the same). Highly recommend for aspiring copywriters, as well as seasoned writers who want to brush up on their industry's changes.

The Idea Writers by Teressa Iezzi is an insightful, engaging and thorough overview of the massive changes rocking the world of advertising today. While only published in 2010, some of the examples may seem a little outdated, but that only speaks to the speed that our culture is moving, rather than any fault of the author. Moreover, that fact alone only emphasizes the thrust of Iezzi's thesis in this book - the modern copywriter needs to be moving as fast as the culture they live in, engaging it and uncovering insights that bring power to the brand they're working on.The book examines some of the important and innovative campaigns of the 2000s, starting with BMW Films - a campaign I remember as a 14-year-old kid, thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Then she moves to more contemporary examples, such as Old Spice's "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" - which started out as a TV spot but evolved into a multimedia, digitally immersive campaign. Each time Iezzi examines a campaign, she uncovers the shift in where advertising and creative brand thinking have gone - which is more integrated and consumer-focused. In fact, one of the most important changes is that the brand no longer tells the consumer what benefits they can bring, but rather brands should seek to solve problems the consumer may have. A shining example is AKQA's work with Nike and the creation of Nike+ and the Nike FuelBand.AKQA has been one of the agencies leading the way when it comes to the next generation of how brand creatives should work, embodying a statement Benjamin of Palmer of The Barbarian Group told AdAge, "The big change that needs to happen is that we need, as an industry, to be innovators in making ourselves useful... For the same budget and energy as we expend on current forms of advertising, we could be making something more tangible, useful and reusable that plays a more integral part in the consumer's life," he said.Good stuff - and that's really one of the key things I took away from reading this book, the amount of money brands shovel into traditional media buying is being reallocated to other, cheaper forms of brand communication - namely, content development. Rather than spending a billion dollars on TV/Radio/Print, brands are looking for more effective ways to reach consumers and digging up those ideas is your job. Are you ready for the changes coming our way?I read the book more as a manifesto and after finishing it up, my brain was stewing with ideas. Which is exactly what a book on creativity should do. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in business. While focused primarily on what a copywriter does, I'd say the siloed job titles of old school advertising are quickly losing relevance, anyone can offer insights into how a brand should communicate today, whether you're an Art Director, Account Planner or client-side marketing manager - don't get left behind.Hope this review was helpful!Find me on Instagram or Twitter to connect @guybarnhart

I am a young CW who is looking for books to improve my craft; unfortunately, this book does not deliver on that, but it did give me insight into some of the more well-known digital / social work from the early 2000s. The issue for me is I came into the business leading with social and digital, so my world was and always has been digitally-focused, so the examples given in the book are somewhat pedestrian at this point (although I did find some of them interesting and made notes to remember for future projects). As for the book itself, it's well-written (I liked some of the CW tips too) and enjoyed the validation I felt while reading it (the author describes the role of the "new CW" which I found to be quite on point).Overall, I would recommend the book if you want to brush up on the history of digital / feel inspired, but (and this may depend on how old you are / how long you've been CWing) if you're trying to improve your craft or "discover something you didn't know before," I'm not sure I would recommend.

Best book out there on what copywriting has become to the agency. A "writer's writer" book for sure--people who don't understand the idea of what copywriting is won't get it as much as someone (like me) who has seen the world lose its attention span and gain a keen sense of when to avoid ads vs. "real people" writing something (i.e. Yelp reviews, blogs, and Amazon/New Egg et al reviews, many many many many of which are stealth sponsored indirectly by the product company. If you write advertising or are inside an agency and want to catch up on how the ideas your agency sells clients are approached, this is your handbook.

Really really helpful! It is starting to age so some of the examples are a little less applicable to the industry today BUT it is still full of solid advice and talks about a lot of great work.

I'm going to preface this review with the fact that I have Aspergers; So there's a few social skills I have a natural difficulty with. For me these include things like reading body language, eye contact, determining if something is literal or figurative, etc. While I do understand body language, It doesn't always come naturally to me - I might miss seemingly obvious things like someone doing the "Come here" motion with their hand, Someone needing me to get something for them that's behind me and pointing at it (but without verbally saying it), etc. A book like this is incredibly valuable to me, since it shows me what the body language looks like and what it means or may mean. Since I don't always recognize these things, even moreso than most people - This book is worth it's weight in gold to me.

Beyond useful in all walks of life. The only warning I have for people, beware the literal power this book possesses. If you read it a section at a time and then look for that item, you will start to see how much people actually lie in general conversation. If you are a people watcher, this book will provide insight light years beyond what you think you understand. It also can help people who are a bit socially ackward with feeling comfortable around people they do not know.

4.9 stars.A phenomenal book! I will now look at everybody in a different way, and try not to be creepy when I pay attention to their body language, haha.Seriously, though, this was fascinating. I originally read this book partly because I wanted more insight into writing the bodily gestures of my characters during dialogues, but of course, these tips are useful for my daily interactions with others too.One thing I realized for writing body language in fiction, is that even though we can see gestures in detail in real life, we may not necessarily describe these gestures with so much precision in our books: one, because readers might not understand what it means or they might even misunderstand; two, when we interpret someone’s facial expression, we may jump to the emotion without consciously processing what physical gestures expressed that emotion. So we’ d think: “her gaze turned wistful” rather than a detailed portrayal of her eyebrow, pupil, mouth, etc. movements.I really liked the general principle of spotting comfort versus discomfort behaviors, as this heuristic makes everything easier to understand. And I appreciate how honest Joe is in telling us that there is no sure-fire way to know if someone is lying or not. Real life is never that simple to figure out.The only reason why I took off 0.1 stars, was because I was led to believe by a certain paragraph in the book that we would see a chapter on people’s idiosyncratic, personal bodily gestures. So I was disappointed to find that I was mistaken.Still, this was a fabulous book! Highly recommended!

Each of us, instinctively, look at the faces of people with which we converse. We also take a generalized wide field view of their body language. We decide friend or foe rather quickly, displeased or happy, the very general view of who we are encountering. We OBSERVE things like people rubbing their sweaty palms on their thighs or tapping their toes, or licking their lips, but those we just "see" without thinking about. After reading this book you will notice stuff like that and see if it applies, which means you are thinking which means you paid attention to the book. You will quickly identify every one of the "tells" in the book, in yourself and others, but now you will think about what you see.

The impact this book has had a dramatic impact on the way I view human interactions. Before reading this book, I scarcely understood body language and non-verbal communication; now, thanks to this brilliant work by Joe Navarro and Marvin Karlins, I understand why some people seem more confident than others when they speak, how adopting different techniques can allow one to become more persuasive when speaking, what to look for when attempting to detect deception, etc. This book is more than a just a work of non-fiction: it is a guide to help you understand how non-verbal communication effects human interactions. Thanks to this book, I've begun using some of the techniques the authors recommend to become more self-assured in communicating effectively and convincingly; this book as also given me the tools necessary to gauge what another person's thoughts are when I'm communicating with them, as a great deal of human interaction depends on understanding others through their body language. I will be referring back to this book many times in the future, as the wealth of knowledge that is explicated throughout this work is so valuable that it necessitates consistent review and contemplation. Plus, the book is written a way that makes it immediately accessible even to those who do little reading, so I won't have to worry about becoming confused by vague language when referring back to a specific page or technique. I loved reading this book, and I find myself continuously enjoying it whenever I refer back to it to help clarify any uncertainty I may have after interacting with another person. Whether you want to better understand what your significant other is thinking or feeling, what to do to come across as more friendly and inviting to strangers, or simply improve your non-verbal intelligence, this book will surely help you do all of that and more.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my son who is feeding is newer interest in psychology and counseling. My wife and I started reading it before we wrapped it up for him and enjoyed it, though we only spent about a half an hour with it. The content reminded me of how the TV series "Lie to Me" might have started. The book is very straight forward, making it an easy read. The author doesn't waste any words and gives straight content without any fluff throughout. There are many black and white photos to supplement each section of the book's content. This would make a good read for anybody with an entry level curiosity for this subject matter.

The Original Buddhist Psychology: What the Abhidharma Tells Us About How We Think, Feel, and Experience Life, by Beth Jacobs PhD

Review

"Beth Jacobs has the kind of mind that absorbs Abhidharma information and structure, combined with a lifetime of eloquent writing and clinical skills as a psychologist. The result is a unique treasure of a book and contribution to the study of Buddhism and mind."—Sojun Diane Martin, founding and guiding teacher, Udumbara Zen Center   "Jacobs' work here is unprecedented: for all of the popular literature on Buddhist thought and practice and its relationship to psychotherapy, no one has yet made the foundational Buddhist psychological sources—the Abhidharma—available to a non-academic audience. Jacobs is doing just that. The Abhidharma is notoriously difficult to understand, let alone master. But in weaving her personal experiences as a therapist and Zen student into her learned discussion of the Abhidharma psychology, Jacobs makes the Abhidharma come alive. Her examples are startlingly illustrative, her language is fresh and immediate, and her use of her personal story breathes life into what is often thought of as the driest of Buddhist texts."—Joy Brennan, PhD, assistant professor of religious studies, Kenyon College“Beth Jacobs not only reveals the essence of the complex and nuanced text of the Abhidharma but holds it lightly and turns it slowly so that we can see through it to a whole new view of ourselves and the world.”—Polly Young-Eisendrath, PhD, author of The Present Heart: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Discovery   “A wonderfully unique, refreshing, and much-needed alternative to the seemingly dry, tedious, and endless lists that typify the vast Abhidharma literature. Beth Jacobs has given us a penetrating, thorough, and dynamically practical study, full of beautiful lived examples that clearly demonstrate everyday usefulness.”—Seiso Paul Cooper, author of The Zen Impulse and the Psychoanalytic Encounter

This is an excellent introduction to Buddhist psychology, the Abhidharma. In writing about the complexity of our experience on a moment-by-moment basis, it would be tempting to oversimplify, to offer summations, to diminish life with breezy explanations. Beth Jacobs never does this. She uses the sources at hand, her own 21st century life and the writings of the early Buddhists who gave us the Abhidharma, to invite us to contemplate the largeness of our lives and those of others. There is elegance in this book, and humor, and a good and necessary dose of humility.

This insightful study of an ancient core Buddhist text, "The Abidharma," rings true for 21st century practitioners. The writing is crystalline, graceful and rich with practical examples. Beth combines her sensei wisdom with her psychotherapy skills to invite the reader into material many Buddhists might not realize is immediately vital to waking up. When reading I often stopped in order to directly practice the teachings about consciousness Beth explains. Such a treasure trove of startling relevance!

Beth Jacobs has taken an extremely complex subject from early Buddhism, the Abhidharma, and presents it in an understandable style to a modern audience. She bring together modern neuroscientific findings which often confirm the early Buddhists theories of the mind and her own experience as a therapist and a Buddhist student to make this an enjoyable and accessible read. It is an important contribution to the study of the original Buddhist sources and their relevance for us today.

a deep dive into Buddhist perceptual understanding , some of which you see in the sutras, seasoned with a perspective of a modern psychoanalyst

Good

Excellent very well and clearly written exposition of this difficult topic. I loved the original poetic language used to describe many of the concepts

Thank you

If you are serious about understanding the profound contribution that traditional Buddhist psychology can make to modern psychology, you’ll have no better guide than Dr. Jacobs.Over a quarter century ago, the late neuroscientist Francisco Varela made tentative efforts to correlate the Buddhist skandhas (the five “aggregates” or components of experience) with similar components of experience as conceived of by modern neuroscience.Subsequent research has determined that the unfolding of experience as laid out in ancient Buddhist texts - beginning with “form” or what we nowadays misconceive of as self-existent ‘matter’, on through sensation or feeling, perception, mental formations (‘schemas’ in the language of cognitive science) and consciousness (or more properly, egoic self-consciousness) – does in fact correlate quite closely with modern neuroscientific discoveries. But to the best of my knowledge, nobody has dived as deeply as Dr. Jacobs into the fascinating intricacies of ancient Buddhist psychology. She identifies 17 stages (or “steps”) in the unfolding of a moment of consciousness. She offers us in-depth and enlightening parallels with modern neuroscience, yet never trivializes Buddhist psychology – a remarkable achievement in itself. There are tantalizing hints of radically different understandings of the nature of matter, time and space. Considering that the book was published in 2017 and in just the last few months, at least a half dozen more neuroscientists have jumped on the ‘panpsychism’ bandwagon (considering “consciousness” – “Chit” rather than “citta” – to be a fundamental force in the universe ), we can add “prescient” to the list of attributes of this book.If you believe, as I do, that deep reflection on the nature of the personality and the self is a powerful practice in itself, you’ll find that “The Original Buddhist Psychology” is not only a fascinating read but a valuable guide to meditation practice as well.

Value Stream mapping: How to visualize Work and align leadership for organizational transformationAs with most of my book reviews, I’ll approach the write-up from a pragmatic perspective. That is, as most authors do provide detailed explanations, background and theory describing each of their topics and subject areas … what are the practical examples of artifacts, forms/templates, questionnaires, methodologies etc., which a reader could use in either in, day-to-day operations, management or project delivery responsibilities?I’ll list some (!) of the major takeaways I find (with thoughts and rationale), which would make this book worth purchasing.• The author offers an excel tool for documenting the processes and calculating results• Identifications of risks to be avoided – some foundational areas to watch for• Value stream mapping phases and tasks – gets you started• Value stream map charter example – always good to see an alternative template.. if you don’t have a format• Value stream map design questionnaire – identifying the areas of opportunities for the future state model• Value stream transformations plan – high level executive view• Examples (Appendix): Seeing how others used VSM to identify and measure process improvements, is a great takeaway...o VSM for outpatients imaging – current and future stateo Supplier purchasing VSM - current and future state and recommendations for process improvementso Repair services - current and future state as well as metrics on % improvementso Custom shelving systems - current and future state with metrics on % improvemento Software development change request - current and future state with metrics on % improvements

I really thought I'd get more from this, but there wasn't much there. The last section on introducing changes, in particular, was thin. I had been hoping for more prescriptive guidance on how to identify and design value streams, but ultimately this felt like a very heavy-weight set of activities around a very macro-view of an organization's flow. Maybe I'm just not deep enough into this kind of work to "get" what the authors were talking about though.

Value Stream Mapping in office and service environments have always been a challenge. Most offices are organized functionally and this creates disconnects. Now there is finally a resource that demystifies the landscape of many organizations in a way that is steeped with years of experience. Learning from your own mistakes leads to tacit knowledge, but what if you don't need to make as many mistakes on your way to organizational excellence? The authors introduce Value Stream Maps in a practical manner that is helpful for anyone. I like how change leadership and organizational development principles are embedded without calling them out! Highly recommended for anyone wanting a tried and trued recipe for disrupting traditional mindsets while learning a new way to see work. Even an experienced lean facilitator will walk away with new insights.

Pretty concise and well-organized information. Good mixture of fact presentation and implementation examples. Need to pair with a Lean Methods book if reader is not familiar with essential concepts like signaling, pull flow, etc.

A good overview of some of Lean's good tools. Summary enough to get the unitiated on-board without drowning them in jargon. Detailed enough to be a guidebook during execution.

To be honest, I starting applying Karen's value stream maps midway through the book on one of my training and quality projects and was surprised to find I identified gaps and opportunities for improvement I didnt notice before. The many examples in the book made the application easy. Id recommend this book to anyone looking to design better outcomes and customer experiences.

Value Stream Mapping is a powerful technique which should be part of any consultant's toolbox. Although contracts or organizational inertia may prevent work based on a value stream mapping exercise, just walking through the process with staff may serve as a catalyst to later action. This book does an excellent job at laying out the essential elements for newcomers, and adding insights for old hands which can revitalize interest. Strongly recommended.

I think this is a very good book for those who are doing the transition from manufacturing to office/transactional processes. The author describes the VSM in a clear and structure way, takes you step by step with good keep of detail without overwhelming you with unnecessary information. One of the points I found interesting, it's her approach and preference for narrow VSM's. Many of us are often tempted to to map wider processes and end up with a lot of "if" situations and a VSM too complex to make any ground breaking desicion, resulting in a mediocre VSM and a disappointed team.I did find this book as worth reading and a must read book for any lean practitioner. Good enough for me to buy other books from the same author.

She taught both English and theatre arts before leaving her job to make her family her life's work. In an attempt to get her home under control, Dana started blogging as “Nony” (short for anonymous) at A Slob Comes Clean. Dana soon realized she was not alone in her housekeeping struggles and in her feelings of shame. Hello, I’m Pam, and I’m a slob.I have to qualify this to say that I’ve been married to a neat freak for 36 year, so my slob factor has been contained – but not squelched! Dana speaks to me even though my house isn’t really that messy.Dana does have a few things that she repeats. But, to me, that’s a good thing because sometimes (all the time?), I need to hear things a few times before they sink in.This is not an organization book. It is a deslobification book. When the house isn’t drowning in too many things, the organization will follow. Really!Dana discusses getting the clutter out of every area in your house. That sounds like a project that would take a dedicated week or month. But her system (that she has perfected from experience after experience) allows this to happen in what she calls “awkward pauses” in your real life. You can get the clutter out in the small chunks of time that happen while you’re waiting for the load of laundry to finish. Or in between times you pick up your kids from different schools. The first time you read that you are supposed to carry one thing, right then, to the place it belongs, your heart, brain, and body will rebel. You will say, “That’s not practical. I’ll be carrying things back and forth all day! It only makes sense to make a pile of things that belong in the master bedroom all at once and then carry it there. It’s so inefficient to carry one thing to the place it belongs!!” Well, Dana explains why it is so much better to carry that one thing, right then, to where it belongs. (Spoiler – it keeps you from making a bigger mess while you’re disorganizing because you know once you get a pile of things that don’t belong in the kitchen, the doorbell will ring! She explains it a lot better than I can.)This isn’t a book that promises once you “deslobify”, your house will never be messy again. That would require magic (or at least a total brain transplant for me). It does promise to give you tools to allow you to manage your house when life happens. That’s good enough for me.***I pre-ordered this book, and also got to read an advance copy as a member of the launch team.***

I. Love. This. Book. It was easy and quick to read and kept my attention throughout the book. That is important to me as I can be easily distracted. The hard thing about sticking to reading this book is that it will make you want to get up and go declutter!I just learned of Dana K. White four months ago. I quickly related to everything that she said. I felt like I finally found someone who really understands me! I’m not the horrible person I had been believing I was. I just didn’t know how to manage my stuff! I have felt like a failure when it comes to housekeeping my entire life. I am 58 years old. My stinking thinking is now changing and I feel hopeful!Dana takes you step by step, room by room, and makes it easy! In fact, the first rule is to do the easy stuff first — trash! Why did I never think of that myself? Then you go to the next easy thing. I can do that! And things start looking better. I have now learned that “less is better”. I don’t have to do it perfectly for it to be better.Dana does have a sense of humor but in this book you will also see a serious and compassionate side. I appreciated that as much as the humor.I pre-ordered this book, but also got to read an advance copy as a member of the launch team. I plan to get the audio version as well. Dana is fun to listen to.Thank you, Dana, for the opportunity to read this book and for the encouragement that you give to so many!! I’m so glad I found you!

This is THE DECLUTTERING BOOK FOR ME. I started to highlight and found myself highlighting the whole damn book!Having read Dana’s first book How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind, I immediately pre-ordered her Decluttering book, because that is by far my biggest problem. Luckily, after pre-ordering & paying full price, I got an advance copy of the book. Admittedly, I did worry that a lot of it would entail repeats from the first book, without much new info. PUT THAT CONCERN TO REST.While there is a little repetition, I found this much more in line with what I really need – from the reasons for the clutter to the ways to attack it, Dana really speaks to my specific problems.Having just started my cleanup, I’m still at the 1st Visibility Station, but I’ve finished the Easy Trash and Duh-Clutter, without anxiety or coming to a dead halt – that’s 2 major steps for me. Now I’m gearing up to answer the 2 Declutter Questions and then pray I can tackle the Container Concept.Had a little trouble with the Donate Duplicates I Don’t Need, until a Light Bulb Moment: I need to stop storing stuff I can’t find anyway and let the Store store it for me. New concept of a Store! It’s easier & faster to hop in the car and go to the store, where things are stored logically, than try to find things at my house. Even if I must pay full price (gulp – Light Bulb #2) it’s cheaper than wasting money on a whole bunch of On Sale Junk, then forgetting I have it…or beating myself up & the frustration of searching for hours because I can’t remember where I put it.Maybe I can master the Container Concept after all. Yes, there is Hope for me and my mess house. Thank you, Dana. One Last Note: Dana’s humor is great – not too cutesy, totally appropriate and makes the lessons oh, so palatable. If you’re even a little bit slob, a cluttered mess or just need help clearing out one area – this is a great book for you. (less)
