I saw the review in the Wall Street Journal and bought the book based on that. Mr. Florman is a very good writer in my opinion. This was "his story," after a lifetime in construction, most of it in and around New York City. He describes a rough and tumble business. One that both he and his firm, KBF survived with their integrity intact. If you want detail on how a skyscraper is built, step by step, this is not the book to read. If you want an account of one man's and one firm's journey through the world of construction in NYC and all that entailed, then this will be a satisfying book to read.
I just had to pretend as thought this was my life and I was writing this book myself. I related to some experiences, coveted others, and wished I never come close to others. Mr. Florman does well explaining the victories, pitfalls, and memorable moments as a civil engineer in the construction industry. I recommend to all civils. You might not read much, but this one is worth it.
An exceptionally enjoyable read. Mr Florman has done a superb job of describing his experiences in an industry which has contributed immensely to our way of life. In the many anecdotes which he provides he enumerates the situations which an engineering manager will face. The text is easy to read and holds the reader's attention. Especially interesting are his descriptions of bringing minorities into the managing workforce. I empathize with the author since I also had my education truncated by being drafted during Viet Nam.

A well written volume. The author is obviously very literate, which is not always the case.Having said that, the book was not really when I expected. The author alludes to what must be the most rough and tumble construction market in the USA, New York City and environs, but provides only a few specifics.The best chapters by far are those dealing with what happens when something goes wrong with a construction project. The antics of law firms whose main purpose is not bring resolution but to enhance their fees by dragging out litigation hit home very well.In summation, not a bad book, but not spectacular by any means.
Having spent my entire working life as a Steamfitter in Local 638, which covers the 5 boro's and Long Island, I found this book rather boring!
Great book, but I might be a little bias as I also am an engineer and contractor.
