The book is well written, to the point, and covers what needs to be covered when you are getting into DD-MRP. It positions the journey and landscape very well and provides the building blocks should you want to implement yourself. In operations though there are a few extra odds and ends needed.One thing I did not like is that graphs and figures are in black and white - the color versions are available for download though.All in all: great stuff!

If I could give this 10 or more stars I would do it. This book was recommended to me as my husband is dealing with memory loss and is 90 years old. Even though the book deals with Alzheimer's I still connected with Olivia's emotional journey. I have been care giving for my husband for about 6 years. I started to meditate regularly three years ago and that is what I mostly connected with in the book. She and her husband both meditator's come from a beautiful place in dealing with life and death which is the same outlook my husband and I have. I found myself understanding more when I get angry and feel "is this what my life will be about" I had never read a book with someone dying with Alzheimer's so if my husband does move into that diagnosis I feel I will be more educated on the journey.

As a professional in mental health as well as a nurse working with people who are in the process of dying, I found the Buddhist perspective on the journey to care for a beloved family member with Alzheimer's intriguing. But as a caregiver of a man with Lewy Body dementia, I found it a life-saver!I'm well-versed in Buddhist tradition and have read much about the Buddhist approach to dying, but Olivia Hoblitzelle tells us of one couple's heartfelt journey to companion each other to the end of (his) life, using Buddhist practices as their anchor or port in a storm of change and confusion. I loved, loved, loved this book and have read it to my dear friend who is in crossing into late stages of this disease, as well as shared it with friends who are caring for various family members: parents, spouses, and in one case, a son with early onset dementia.Her compassion is inspiring, and yet equally so is her impatience and compassion fatigue. Her struggles to make Hob's passage into and beyond an unknown terrain a traverse of love (no matter what) are as authentic and heartbreaking as her attempts to keep the threads of her own (separate) life gathered together so she would have something of her own once his journey had ended. These are the very real issues managed by everyday caregivers. She has a way of inviting the reader into his/her own story by compellingly recounting hers.A beautiful book, absolutely beautiful.

One of the most profoundly moving books written about the 'journey' Olivia and Hob, her husband, diagnosed with Alzheimers, would ever be asked to make. A must read. The spiritual integrity and practices that underline the couple's approach to dealing with the devastating effect of the syndrome is a courageous example for us all. A caveat: the title here was forced upon the author by the publisher on its second edition - it trivializes the book and does it no favours, nor is it particularly relevant. The statement Ten Thousand etc etc is a Buddhist thing (perfectly fine for a treatise on Buddhism). The original title is powerful and contains within itself the indicator of the profound love between this couple. The original title The Majesty of Your Loving should have been preserved. Majesty - the light of majesty is in everyone, or we would not recognize it; it is the divine light which gives our essence its Being. However, not all of us live to the majesty of that light, nor to the light of Majesty. We do, however, recognize majesty: the dignity, integrity, humour and repose which extend from a person out of whose presence flows an innate authority. The love between Olivia and Hob is majestic, and we are humbled by its presence as we read.

Olivia Ames Hoblitzelle has given us a remarkable and beautifully written account of her and her husband's mindful journey through Alzheimer's Disease. I believe that her story is not only for those affected by this awful disease, however. I found much of interest and also comfort here regarding the universal theme of death and dying.Hoblitzelle and her husband were students and teachers of Buddhism and Mindfulness Meditation and she brings that radiantly clear and fearless view of death to bear here, but no matter your spiritual tradition, this is one of the most compassionate, unflagging, and hopeful accounts of a journey to the other side that I have read, and having lost both of my parents to cancer, I have read many, representing many traditions. In spite of the subject matter, Ten Thousand Joys & Ten Thousand Sorrows is never maudlin or morose, but offers an honest, unflinching guide to a "good dying".If you or anyone you know is facing death, or has already crossed that threshold - okay, so that's everyone - this beautiful book will help.

This is truly a story of two people, even though only one person wrote it. She was able to capture so much of her husband even as she gradually lost him to Alzheimer's. His "diminishment" is what he called it - the tiny piece by piece loss of a brilliant human mind. She honors him in her writing, and she honors herself as she writes honestly of the strain and heartbreak of being the witness to everything both of them lose, slowly, gradually, permanently. This book is very much a keeper - one I'll reopen frequently.

this book is about one couple's journey with Alzheimer's disease. It was interesting to read & relate to as far as the disease goes but it has a lot about Buddhism in it & the author's involvement as teachers & meditators. I ordered another book since reading this & this seems to be more helpful to me as I struggle with various issues caring for my young spouse with the disease.

A moving story of practice and loss.I appreciate being able to purchase it online because my nearby town doesn't have a bookstore.

George Washington was many things to many people, but in his heart--- he was a farmer. Growing vegetables, fruits,and beautiful plants was his true passion. George also experimented with cross-breeding animals and designed an octagonal barn and ran a distillery. This book looks at his life through his love of gardening and is beautifully photographed and just chock-full of history. For someone who has visited Mount Vernon this book will bring back fond memories. If you have never visited Mount Vernon, plan to do so and see how our first President ran his gardens. I think you will be delighted with this book!

Unfortunately, it is this language almost all introductory mathematical textbooks inevitably conform to, at the cost of the reader's comprehension. Dr. Stone, overcomes this language rift by explaining the math in a friendly, familiar way. He further takes the care to ensure appropriate time is spent clarifying each topic in a variety of ways (in case one does not make much sense). Stone also provides appendices as reference for the reader who may need more explanation or refreshers. This kind of guidance through mathematical theory is inherently absent in the mathematical language as its core is precision, brevity, and removal of all redundancy.It is his very thoughtful explanation and walkthrough which makes me confidence to say that Dr. James V Stone's introduction to information theory is conceivably the best book I have read; not just in regards to information theory but in regards to mathematics (applied or otherwise) as a whole.The reader is guided through Shannon's seminal work in a way that is applicable regardless of the reader's background (mathematics, art, biology, journalism, etc). This book works well as a standalone text, and as a supplement to more intricate texts in regard to information theory. Do not let the title introduction fool you, Dr. Stone manages to maintain the intricacies of the field in a way often overlooked.

Information Theory: A tutorial Introduction is a highly readable first account of Shannon's mathematical theory of communication, now known as information theory. It assumes little prior knowledge and discusses both information with respect to discrete and continuous random variables. It is highly readable and a great gentle introduction to the theory. It is intuitive rather than rigorous and gives very clear examples of how to use information and coding theory to frame certain problems.The book starts out by defining the units of information, bits and then how to quantify information so that it has the properties that we would like it to have namely additive, continuous, maximal with respect to certain probability measures and symmetry. He goes through some of the various examples to give a feel of how information can be considered and how many means of communication include much redundancy. The author first tackles discrete random variables and their entropy and information. Through basic ideas like the less likely a piece of information is the more information it has leads to the construction of a measure of information which fits with Shannon's conditions. From that construction of entropy the author then goes through and explores its repercussions with things like dice examples. The explanations are clear and its hard not to feel like you are really making some progress on what is supposed to be a very difficult subject. The author moves from information to coding theory, which is the practical application of the subject and introduces ideas like channel capacity, how much information can be transmitted in a noiseless channel, conditional expectations and coding schemes that can deliver results arbitrarily close to the channel capacity. The author spends some time discussing redundancy in English and coding schemes for how to create efficient blocks for the language which is really interesting. One learns very quickly through the tutorials that trying to have blocks of code which are equiprobable is the way to get to the best coding efficiency and maximize information transmission. The author then moves on to noisy channels, which is far more practical and further evolves the readers intuition. One learns how to add redundancy to codes to make them resilient to noise contamination. The author discusses continuous random variables and their information. The information of a continuous variable, which is a more difficult subject, can be considered infinite given the events possible are uncountable, but with noise this is avoided and the author explains the ideas well so that the content remains clear. The author discusses mutual information in the continuous case giving the reader a strong understanding of joint and marginal probability distributions. With these tools the author goes back to channel capacity in a noisy channel for continuous variables and re-discusses the ideas from discrete variables in the new light. The author then moves on from communication related information theory to entropy and physics. These chapters were to give a feel of the similarity and topics like thermodynamics and quantum information are lightly touched.Information Theory is a highly readable account of what is usually a very technical subject. The reader will come through it with an intuitive feel for information and how transmission of information across various channels and coding schemes to do this effectively. The only thing is there are no exercises so the confidence will be to some extent somewhat false as reading and implementing are very different things. That being said as an introductory text before tackling more mathematical works I think this is very helpful. I have both this as well as the author's work on Bayes and I prefer the content of this. Definitely recommended.

Life is too short to read good books, we only have time for great books. And for technical subjects this is the difference between developing an intuitive understanding of the topic vs drowning in jargon.This book is a great example of an author really taking the time to hone in on the minimally sufficient prose and exposition to make a challenging topic accessible. I found a mediocre set of time-flash cards where I live (on a US territory far, far away) and posted them on a wall by a clock with labels of the time shown and that has helped for the o'clocks...but the rest are still "tricky" for her...I broke these babies out after receiving them last week and, at least for a short period, they kept her interested in learning a bit more because of the cute and changing pictures, front and back, on the cards...big and little hands are clearly shown and in different colors... She even showed interest in the money cards >:D ...another nemesis... again, with great ideas/pictures to capture attention...Nice quality... Kept her interest ~ even if just for a little while... A bargain at twice the price!! :)

Great cards. Simple and perfect for introducing somewhat similar concepts to my 6yr old so he can master them at home while learning in school.

Nice set of flash cards for the price. They can bend easily so be careful. Still worth it though! I have quite a few sets and I am happy with them.
