I have many books, tapes, computer programs and charts to help me learn Japanese. Nothing has been as fun and useful as this CD. Great concept, great execution.

`Earworms Rapid Japanese' is a new way of learning a language based on linking words and phrases to music. The album has a variety of tracks that take you through various situations and gives you the words you may need. These words are almost sung along with catchy tunes in the background, I say almost as they are spoken but in time with the music to assist your memory. On this disc a man speaks the English and a native Japanese lady speaks the Japanese. Both speak very clearly and are in no way cheesy or patronising. What is also good is that at times the man may ask questions to clarify a point or pronunciation and they lady will respond. The topics covered in Volume 1 (meant to cover brief visits, whereas Volume 2 covers more in-depth knowledge) are `I would like...', `To Order', Have You Got...?', To The Airport', Numbers, days and time', `Is There?', `Directions', `Where, how many and what time?', `Problems' and `Do You Understand English?'. Basically what you'd need on your first holiday to Japan. The music is OK to listen to and not excessively cheesy or boring. It gets a bit repetitive at times, but this is kind of the point as it's meant to be almost like a jingle that hooks the phrases in your brain. There are various music styles with folky guitar, Celtic styles, drum (almost dance) style and more. There is also a complimentary website that adds ideas to help with learning and retention. There is information in the booklet on how the idea of earworms works, as well as the phrases used so you can read along if you wish. I found this system of language learning easy to use and I retained a great deal of the words used. You do need to repeat the listening, but with the music this isn't too arduous and you can easily have this on in the background and still pick bits up. Coupled with a good phrasebook this should stand you in good stead for any visits to Japan you may have planned. This is the only product that I have used that will have you ordering food and getting directions in Japanese in under a week. The insistent repetition method really works. I found myself spontaneously remembering phrases that I had tried to learn in the past. Earworms is is bar none the best option for the unserious student of Japanese, and should be considered by anyone who is trying to learn this language.

The phrases taught here seem like they would be great if you are planning at trip to Japan. However, I was so distracted by the weird background music and crazy echo interludes "sumimasen-sumimasen-sumimasen-sumimasen!" that I didn't retain much. Also, the words aren't really set to the jazzy music so much as spoken over it. It's definitely not something I would listen to for fun.

I was so excited for this series, because the Earworms website promises, "brain optimized, accelerated learning." I was really hoping for something revolutionary, like the Head First series of books. But, unfortunately, this is just a very mediocre introduction to Japanese. I was so disappointed.I bought the Rapanese cassette tapes over ten years ago, and they were goofy, but they taught me a little Japanese. I bought this CD excited to see what leaps Japanese instruction had made in the last decade. Sadly, that dated, wacky audio cassette was much more advanced than this CD.The 'music' is super cheap stock music, or elevator music. The voice actors talk in a little bit of sing-songy voices, but definitely not on beat with the music (the music was mixed in afterwards). You'll probably pick up more Japanese by reading the Wikipedia article on Learning Japanese, than you'll get by listening to this CD.The voice actors are by far the best part of this. With every other part of this, you'll wish you bought some other method of learning Japanese.Pros:+I liked both of the voice actors on this CD. The male actor has a nice British accent, and the female actor has a nice Japanese accent.Cons:-If you're looking for something that's revolutionary in any way, you'll be super disappointed-Super annoying music-Super annoying sound effects-Really bad sound mixing. The background music is too loud-The dialog is a rehash of every other beginning Japanese course ever written

I just received my book in the mail today (first one from this author). I was a little disappointed to see that there are no photographs for any of the recipes (not even in black and white). There are black and white illustrations, but most of them look like random clip art that are not related to the recipes. Luckily, the recipes aren't complicated. They look easy to make and don't use too many ingredients. The instructions are short and easy to understand, so that helps to get a quick idea of what it "may" look like. But it sure would have been nice to see a photograph or a detailed illustration of what the dish is suppose to look like in the end.

However, when I was growing up, if there was one athlete my friends and I looked up to with complete and utter awe, it was Michael Jordan. He represented what could be accomplished when you fully immersed yourself into becoming the best that you could be. Having said this, reading ‘Michael Jordan: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Players’ gave me a much deeper insight than I had ever known about the man who inspired us to follow aspirations. An avid reader, I love books, but usually tend to stay far away from biographies because they often come off stuffy and read like a list of facts with no genuine flow. Geoffrey’s unauthorized biography of Michael Jordan, however, is written in a way that makes you want to (digitally) turn the next page, just to find out more about a man who was and continues to be one of the most amazing athletes to enter the arena of sports. You feel like you are sitting with a friend who sat on the sidelines catching all of Michael’s moments, great or small, listening to him as he recounts every one of them hooking you in every step of the way. Definitely a great book to check out if you want to know more about the man who made the #23 the thing of legends.

This book is a great option to give to your kids especially if they’re basketball fanatics. It details how Michael Jordan started his basketball career and became the legacy and an icon that he is now. The author did a great job in researching and collecting facts that you can’t even find in a single book. If you're a fan of Michael Jordan or just basketball this book is a must read. Highly recommended!

I'm 20 pages into this book, and I've seen over a dozen grammatical errors thus far. Some are as simple as typing the wrong letter. Last book by this author that I will purchase.

It's a book, so it's a subjective topic. Got it for my son, he liked it. I thought it was somewhat superficial in it's depth/coverage

The greatest basketball player of all time, businessman, and the star of beloved movie Space Jam, Michael Jordan is a figure that many still care about. This unauthorized bio was great in that the author was able to write it without sounding like a generic article. It provided insights into Jordan’s career including recounts of his greatest moments. I would highly recommend this book if you’re a fan of the original #23.

The book is a list of Jordan's game statistics. It tells nothing about the individual. It should not be classified as a biography.

Not only are there just collections of pictures of women there is only one picture of each woman so there is no sense of how one pose works better than another with a certain person or body type. 99% of the pictures are of very young women, really girls with most appearing to be high school seniors and all are thin.So anyone looking for ideas on how to pose women in their 20's, 30's 40's, etc. or tall women, short women, heavy women, full figured women, etc. will find nothing in this book as these people were omitted completely. The only person who get any value out of this book would be someone looking for ideas on how to pose high school seniors and even then the poses and settings are very traditional and do not show any real creativity on the part of the photographer.A photographer looking for ideas would be much better served by going to photo websites and looking at the images there. There is a lot more to be gained by looking at 10-20 pictures of the same person with different poses to see what worked well, not so well or poorly. This book is just a collection of random pictures most of which are from high school senior sessions.There are not really even 500 poses, just sections broken out for head shots, half-body shots, full length shots, sitting, etc. which involves many images that show identical poses with only a different person in the picture. I cannot see why this book was even published other than to sell to unsuspecting photographers as no effort was made to create a book that lives up to the title.

Essentially a collection of 500 portraits, this book contains a lot of photographs of women, divided into the following sections of poses:Head and shouldersWaist up¾ length reclining¾ length seated¾ length standingFull length recliningFull length seatedFull length standingEach photograph gives credit to the photographer, but no other information.There's also a short section on posing basics and a long section about the contributing photographers.I didn't find it as useful as it could have been, as many of the poses were duplicated except for the model and the background, and I would have preferred if it were divided into casual, traditional, glamour, fashion and environmental sections. That way, if I'm shooting outdoors in a casual setting, I can go straight to that section and see all the illustrated poses for that type of photo shoot.It would also have been helpful if some footnotes were used for each portrait, emphasizing a few significant elements of its composition and lighting. (eg - 3/4 view, natural lighting with fill flash, note the tilt of the head and curve of the wrist)Some of the "poses" were nothing special, the beauty of the photograph being due to other elements such as the background architecture and props, and some photographs looked like amateur point and shoot quality.The posing basics section was informative, and some of the portraits are inspiring, but as a "visual sourcebook" it's rather limited.Amanda Richards, January 17, 2012

About the different poses in this book: Some of them are quite nice and flattering, while others are not. Some of the poses here are similar to each other.As for the models in this book: Some of them are pretty and attractive, whereas others are not. But that's OK because this book is about poses, and not models. Models of different races are represented in the photos.A lot of the photos here are "glamour" photos. That's nice for certain types of photographers, but I was hoping there would be more photos of simple girls, or girl-next-door types wearing very little make-up, rather than the glamour-types. Maybe there should be a wider age-range of women models too.Nevertheless, I do like this book. I learned from it. And I will definitely put it to good use.I give it 4 stars.

I started with 500 poses for groups and couples and have since added every 500 poses title from Perkins including a pre-order of 500 Poses for Infants and Toddlers. These are exactly what the title says...a visual source book. And, as I've said in reviews of other books in this "series" I guess you could call it, while I don't imagine I'll duplicate any pose exactly, I can see myself easily combining some of the different poses present for more pleasing compositions. I am a very visual learner so this is the perfect medium for me to learn posing as it's just image after image after image after image of women posed/posing in various scenarios. The same goes for all the other options in the 500 poses family. I forgot to mention in my reviews that there are casual, formal, and business poses all included. I've read (looked actually because not much reading is involved in these books) this book a good three or 4 times already since receiving it.

If you are looking for ANY insight into posing, this is not the book for you. It has many, many photos with zero discussion of why a model was posed a specific way, or what about the model made the photographer pose her (or light her) in a specific way.Also, there are many pictures that appear to be nearly identical poses, to the point where I am not sure that I could decide what the author was intending to demonstrate with one image vice the other.Because this is a visual source book, I expected it to have very little text. I did not expect that it would not have any text at all.I will definitely not be buying another.

As with my other review this book is great for inspiring ideas or coaching subjects but not all of them are great images or great ideas on their own. It’s still a worthwhile tool though.

Kevin Peraino’s newest book, A Force So Swift is an extremely well researched work into the China’s Maoist Revolution in 1949 and how Truman and the U.S. reacted to it. With Mao and his communist ideology on one side and Chiang Kai-Shek’s Nationalists on the other, there were numerous competing influences both for and against a stronger U.S. reaction or even military involvement. Peraino outlines not only the geopolitical realities such as the growing influence of the Soviet Union, Korea – North and South, the French in Vietnam, and the overall concern about stopping the spread of communism. He also brings the background and personality of the key players into his work. Mao, Chiang, Madam Chiang, Truman, Stalin, Acheson as the main players on this world stage as well as many secondary players. He does a remarkable job demonstrating the difference between the seemingly unstoppable political and revolutionary forces and those that could have been altered had there been different players in their respective power roles. Exceedingly well covered was the large question of which of the two competing powers would be recognized by the U.S. and England.Having enjoyed his prior book, Lincoln in the World, I personally found A Force So Swift to have been more academically additive on its topic, perhaps as a result of my greater knowledge of Lincoln vs. China. Author could have researched more thoroughly, particularly among Rep. Walter H. Judd papers as he was less than accurate in Judy's role and motives. I knew Judd well. Also he all but ignored the roles of the anti-Chiang and pro-MaoState department and others influencing our government against Chiang Kai-shek. No development of the "commies are just agrarian reformers" campaign. The author does a disservice to history and what happened to China. It was a watershed for China, but the author neglected to indicate how great a positive change could have come if we hadn't let down our WWII ally. Among some positive developments almost surely been no Viet Man war. No North Korea. No communizing of Cambodia. No Chinese attempt to control huge casts of sea areas. Taiwan development and prosperity could have been mainland China's decades earlier without the cultural revolution, etc, which were the true gifts of Mao and Truman to the world.

Most history books paint the past in broad strokes, covering dozens or hundreds of years. Yet some of the most engaging works drill down into the events of a particular time or place. Kevin Peraino has brilliantly used that approach in A Force So Swift: Mao, Truman, and the Birth of Modern China, 1949. By focusing on the events of a single year, and concentrating on just ten key individual players in the drama, Peraino has brought back to life the complex circumstances surrounding one of the seminal events of the 20th Century. In Peraino's hands, the emergence of the People's Republic of China comes across as though it might have occurred yesterday.And this is not dry history that can be forgotten. As Peraino notes, "Anxious Chinese officials see today's American policy as a sequel to the containment strategy hatched in 1949."1949 was a fateful year in many ways. The year witnessed the growth of the Red Scare, the formation of NATO, the opening run of Death of a Salesman, the resignation and suicide of Defense Secretary James Forrestal, the formation of the Council of Europe, the trials of Alger Hiss, the publication of 1984, the first test of a nuclear bomb by the Soviet Union, and the formation of East and West Germany. Every one of these events figures in the background of Peraino's chronicle of the year.I was barely conscious of the wider world in 1949. After all, I was just eight years old. But every one of the ten individuals Peraino follows through that fateful year conjures up memories for me. Admittedly, my reading of history has a lot to do with that. But all ten of the people profiled in A Force So Swift were active for years after 1949, and I became familiar with them as the years went by. Peraino's book helps me understand them better.The cast of characters in A Force So Swift includes Mao Zedong, Harry Truman, Dean Acheson, Chiang Kai-Shek, Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, Josef Stalin, and Douglas MacArthur, every one of whom is familiar to anyone who reads history. Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, Congressman Walter Judd (R-Minnesota), and British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin all played oversized roles in the events of 1949 but are less well known today. Johnson and Judd were central figures in the China Lobby that pressured Truman. Bevin engineered Britain's recognition of Red China in defiance of US wishes.The central drama illuminated in A Force So Swift is the clash between Acheson and the China Lobby led by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek for President Truman's attention. The debate centered on whether the United States should continue to support the Nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-Shek as they fell apart in the face of continuing Communist victories. Acheson was firmly opposed. Throughout the year, Truman leaned toward Acheson's position, but saying no became progressively more difficult as the year unfolded. ("To court Mao or to confront him? Truman did not really want to do either.") The public relations campaign whipped up by the China Lobby was ferocious, and political pressure from Congress and the Pentagon was daunting. ("The congressional leadership was unanimously opposed to formally halting shipments" of money and arms to Chiang.) Even before Mao declared the formation of the People's Republic on October 1, 1949, Acheson and Truman were convinced Red China was a fait accompli, and they hoped that by refraining from overt attacks on Mao's forces that a split would eventually emerge between China and the Soviet Union. Their opponents refused to accept reality. History shows Truman and Acheson were correct."Ultimately the legacy of 1949," Peraino writes, "in some cases, despite Acheson's best efforts, had included thirty years of nonrecognition of Communist China, a decades-long U.S. commitment to Taiwan, and the wars in Korea and Vietnam."Kevin Peraino is an American journalist who has written for many leading publications.
