Review

“A powerful and involving work of narrative history… You come away from Fear City with a clear sense of what was lost as New York left behind one set of priorities and embraced another.… This is a book that deserves an audience beyond New York City history buffs, and all the more so because of its relevance to our political moment. The young Donald Trump makes a brief cameo appearance as an icon of the new New York, a real estate mogul who leveraged his father’s connections and the city’s desperation into massive tax breaks, starving the city of badly needed revenues for education and other basic municipal functions as he developed properties for the rich. ―Jonathan Mahler, The New York Times Book Review“Fear City is the best account of the New York City fiscal crisis of the 1970s and, more than that, an indispensable contribution to understanding the rise of austerity economics and the long decline of the public sector. This is a history with huge implications for the remaking of American politics and economics in our time.”―Thomas J. Sugrue, author of Origins of the Urban Crisis“The remaking of New York City under cover of crisis was a prelude to what would become a global economic tidal wave. In zeroing in on this little-understood chapter of urban history, Fear City helps sheds much-needed light on a range of contemporary crises, from the starvation of public services amidst enormous private wealth to the rise of Donald Trump. Kim Phillips-Fein is a historian of the first order.”―Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything“Fair, thorough, incisive, and stylish, this is the best book to read not just on New York’s fiscal crisis of the 1970s, but about how bankers became our unacknowledged legislators ever since.”―Rick Perlstein, author of Nixonland and The Invisible Bridge“Before there was Reagan, before there was Thatcher, there was New York City’s fiscal crisis. Here we can see the blueprint for what has since been done to the entire world. This is the story of how the gears were shifted and the age of liberalism put into reverse, told with all the engrossing details, all the forgotten characters, and a memorable style.”―Thomas Frank, author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? and Listen, Liberal“A tour de force. If you want to find the roots of modern conservatism, don’t look in Louisiana, Arizona, or rural Wisconsin. Look in New York, and read Kim Phillips-Fein’s superb Fear City. New York in the 1970s, as Phillips-Fein compellingly shows, was the first sustained victory in the New Right’s long war against the New Deal. Extremely well written and impressively researched, Fear City is essential reading to understand how finance capital, real estate speculation, austerity budgeting, and punitive policing first came together to create the toxic politics of today.”―Greg Grandin, author of Fordlandia and Kissinger’s Shadow“Fear City provides the definitive account of the moment when New York City liberalism ran out of momentum and money, and the conservative reaction that has culminated in Donald Trump began. Phillips-Fein chronicles not only the tense dance with municipal bankruptcy but the largely forgotten efforts by ordinary New Yorkers to stop the legal coup by local and national elites. Lucid, elegantly written, full of new information, it belongs on the shelf of key books about the city, alongside The Power Broker, Gotham, and their like.”―Joshua B. Freeman, author of American Empire and Working-Class New York“This revealing narrative of New York’s transformation from working-class social democracy to the glittering home of fancy finance reminds us that behind the mask of austerity there always lurks a bitter politics of class.”―James K. Galbraith, author of The Predator State and Welcome to the Poisoned Chalice“The story of New York’s financial crisis in the seventies is really a story about the role of cities in America today. New Yorkers pride themselves on being cosmopolitan, on welcoming immigrants, on being willing to spend money on education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Kim Philips-Fein convincingly explains why that caused problems for the city in the past and why now we need New York values more than ever."―Joseph E. Stiglitz, author of Globalization and Its Discontents and The Price of Inequality“Paced like a thriller and extremely well written . . . Phillips-Fein narrates with almost cinematic flair, and by the time the credits roll, the significance of her accomplishment becomes clear. The book should be required reading for all those interested in the past, present, and future of democratic politics.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Deftly recounts the clash between government entities and vested interests as New York struggled to cope with slashed social service . . . Given events since, New York’s crisis―and the author’s astute account of it―seems oddly timely . . . Sobering, smart reading with many pointed lessons for activists.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Ms. Phillips- Fein regards the pre 1975 New York City {NYC} as the liberal beacon of light in the U.S.A. for providing a plethora of services for its citizens that from the mid 1960's it could no longer afford but nevertheless continued to provide and even increasing the funding for many of them. The impression one gets from her narrative is that somehow the city should have continued to provide them despite facing increased and persistent budget shortfalls from the mid 1960's to the near Chapter 11 bankruptcy of 1975 - 76 and the continued budget shortfalls {despite the eventual Federal Bailout} right thru 1981- 82. The sheer political folly, fiscal irresponsibility and willful ignorance of facts of Mayors Robert Wagner, John Lindsey and Abe Beame and their fiscal comptrollers Abe Beame {under Wagner and Lindsay} and Jay Goldin are dispassionately detailed. The picture presented of them is that of myopic career politicians absolutely refusing to face that the reality of major population loss {700,000 + overwhelmingly the middle class}, declining revenues {despite higher & higher taxes !} a massively increased short and long term debt load and worrying more about being reelected which made any fiscal retrenchment or the cutting of services essentially impossible for them to contemplate. AND YET her sympathy seems to lean towards these same irresponsible leaders who recklessly borrowed money, overstated revenue projections and used every fiscal gimmick under the sun not to cut services - a very strange viewpoint !!!Mayor Abraham Beame comes off particularly poorly - he is presented by the author as an intellectual lightweight {both as comptroller and Mayor !!} an inept, blinkered and tone deaf old man who is PETULANT and ANNOYED that by the spring of 1975 the budget numbers cannot be fudged or manipulated any more, the banks have realized this and refused to fund / rollover any new N.Y.C. short term debt and that a fiscal reckoning has finally hit the fan !! He truly believed then and later that somehow the subsequent deep budget cuts for services should have and could have been avoided but how that would have been accomplished is not clearly defined BECAUSE he simply refused to believe that throwing more money out of the window than was being taken in thru the door truly mattered and that someone would {and should have} rode to the rescue for NYC's fiscal woes.Governor Hugh Carey and the NYC Municipal Unions along with the formation of the Municiple Assistance Corporation {MAC} are the unsung hero's of NYC avoiding the disgrace of bankruptcy. Their forced cooperation however reluctant and ad- hoc saved the city from immeadiate Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1975-76 giving it the breathing room to survive to fight another day. President Gerald Ford was 100 % right in his assessment of the fiscal incompetence, reckless overspending and over borrowing by the NYC liberal political establishment BUT only a small town political hack like President Ford would have considered allowing the largest city in the U.S.A. to go bankrupt and not think that the ramifications of that bankruptcy would not be an economic and political world shaking event. Despite being technically right in his rigid economic and moral terms President Ford was clearly wrong in the bigger overall picture and he was roundly criticized at home and abroad for his stance and rightly so. But to his credit, he was a major catalyst in forcing NYC to adjust its thinking and its priorities in order to get the federal bailout money it so desperately needed. In my opinion this would never have happened had he just forked over the bucks with no questions asked ! That President Ford was in a tough spot with his own reelection issues cannot be disputed.NYC facing bankruptcy in 1975 is an early prime example of the "too big to fail" syndrome that we would subsequently see and feel in gigantic detail during the 2007-2009 financial meltdown. The author 's chapters on how ordinary New York City citizens fought against the closing of schools, hospitals and fire houses in individual neighborhoods are lovingly detailed but they are beside the point however inspiring their stories may be. By 1975 NYC was in a deep decline economically, spiritually and morally as the July 1977 power failure / blackout would clearly highlight as the blackout brought out the worst in its Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The Wanton, Unashamed, Brazen Looting and Destruction of commercial stores within their own communities, many of them owned by their neighbors and friends was made much worse by the fact that subsequently a significant percentage of the NYC media, political establishment, religious leaders and the national media would find reasons to excuse and even justify this orgy of criminal behavior, rioting, arson, theft and destruction. These were "the chickens coming home to roost" for the post 1975 NYC liberal establishment to ponder and digest. In my opinion the author leans toward having far more empathy for the looters than for those who were robbed and burned out of their business's and jobs. That bone and muscle were cut along with with the fat from NYC budgets for all city services from June 1975 on cannot be denied nor can the pain that these cuts would cause but they CAN BE EXCUSED because in order to save the city from the disgrace and even worse service cuts that filing for Chapter 11 would have entailed - what would have been the alternatives given the political realities of that time ?Two additional books to read in on the policies and players that brought NYC to it's 1975 catastrophe are "The Ungovernable City" by Vincent Cannato - a devastating revelation of limosene liberal John Lindsay's disastrous tenure as the NYC "Fun City" Mayor from 1965-73 and "The Streets were Paved with Gold" by Ken Auletta - a contemporary 1970's look at the fiscal crisis that highlights the mindset and disastrous descision making of NYC elected officials and in it he chronicles one particular incident that in 2018 seems almost surreal. Mr. Auletta describes a scene where Mayor Beame and Comptroller Goldin are in an darkened office late at night with an Albanian bookkeeper wearing a green eye shade poring over a ledger giving them the numbers of the what the cities on hand cash and liabilities are AND this bookkeeper was the only person that had the institutional knowledge to tell the Mayor and Comptroller of the largest city in the U.S.A. with a budget of 10's of billions of dollars where they stood financially. What a stinging indictment this is of the haphazard, crude and slipshod manner on how the NYC municipal government was monitoring and maintaining its fiscal budget. This book is an informative and concise read with the authors presentation of the key players, power brokers, how the MAC came to be and would function, the individual personnel drama's, how Chapter 11 was avoided and how NYC was radically transformed by all this drama is presented via a entertaining and easy flowing narrative. I give this book 4 stars - Recommended.

Excellent read. For a somewhat technical subject matter, it is a nice, easy, quick read that uses the fiscal crisis to frame a larger discussion about the role of government in social issues. A great history but also thought provoking on the very current issue of underfunded public pensions.

An excellent study in public policy and economic history of the United States of the 1970s. The author makes a great characterization of the cultural, political and economic aspects that a fiscal crisis can have on a city. Kim Phillips-Fein is obviously a liberal ideologically, which can be felt on who she blames for the crisis, e.g. the bankers, elite etc. That said though, the book is excellent and an important contribution to the history and economics of public policy in the united states since the 1970s. Four stars.

This book cronichles the near bankruptcy of New York City in 1975. This doesn't sound like the kind of material that would keep somebody up late at night because they got so involved that they wanted to finish the chapter, and then the next chapter. That's what happened to me. What more can you ask of any book?

Excellent history of the budget crisis and 1970s era New York. Deeply referenced with an outstanding level of historical detail. Very effectively profiles the players who helped the city avert bankruptcy and their various backgrounds and philosophies. If you want to understand the birth and development of modern-day gilded-city NYC you should definitely read this book.

After reading the first chapter - I could not put the book down. It's more than a book - it's a study.

It’s a shame that Kim Phillips-Fein’s masterly Fear City hasn’t received the expansive recognition it so justly deserves. Here, she has followed up on her previous, astute economic account, Invisible Hands, with another painstakingly researched yet engagingly written book.Fear City ostensibly deals with NYC’s mid-1970’s fiscal crisis. Yet what makes it a notable work of history, is the author’s discerning analysis of the event and her lucid explanation of how it ultimately served as a model for the national austerity state that emerged from the crisis; one which has spread far beyond the confines of New York City (e.g., the impending, let-them-eat-cake tax cut for the wealthy, and a shredding of the social safety net that is likely to follow). As she eloquently notes in the book’s Epilogue, the sorry legacy of the crisis is that:"...the American economy…was remade…on completely different terms. The idea of using the state to remedy poverty and improve socialconditions has given way to the sense that doing so is simply too expensive…The inequality that characterizes our society today seems tobe accompanied by the constant sense that any hope for a better society, any notion of collective action, must be a pipe dream---irresponsible, impossible to afford.”We are all much poorer since the advent of austerity politics and resulting policy. Yet, readers of Fear City will be deeply enriched by Professor Phillips-Fein’s astute and absorbing narrative.

Very good to read. Well done.

Fifth grade thinking at it's best. This book is funny and worth the time to read. A fun refresher course.

Very funny book and I can verbally annihilate any opponent. love it and will purchase again from this vendor. Everything as described.

If you want a cheap book that gives you one or two minor chuckles in a 10 minute read, this is it. If you're looking for cliche insults that a 5th grader would use, this is also a book for you. If you're an adult, save the 99 cents.

This is so funny. It's really helpful, especially if you're in an insult smackdown! Then you win 😈 😝 😱

These are great insults if you are six or seven years old. Most have been around for years and are silly or stupid, NOT funny. No sophistication at all. Waste of money.

Did better without reading it.

Most examples were crude and heavy-handed ( unless the intent is to start a fight ). Many are phrased in "redneck" fashion, which is both an insult toward rednecks and reveals the user's lack of finesse.

I'm definitely gonna use these at work to bring dead atmosphere s back to life again! A lot of new and funny stuff

David,I'm sorry to say this, but if you don't do better on the next book, I'm breaking up with this series.Honestly, who CARES about any of this story line? I'm not going to spoil it for everyone, but I found this to be the most frustrating book I've read in ages. It's almost like you decided to write a crapload of stuff without ever getting to the meat of the issue ON PURPOSE! Seriously. The book should START with the last paragraph. That's what you've been building up to the last 9 books. Why muck around with the Marshall plan and the rest of the crap? Have you been hanging around George RR Martin and decided to torment your fan base? Please tell me you will publish the next book in just a week. Your editor should have spanked you!!! This is the fluff between the story.Sigh.

Nothing. Happens.Seriously, you could just skip to the last chapter and be ready for the next book. There were several weddings, a few funerals, some political machinations and upheavals, but in the end nothing happened. The final chapter in the book is the only one that couldn’t have been glossed over in a preface to the next tome.See, there needed to be some big enemy or evil plot that was fighting the good guys, but there wasn’t. It was just...people being people.Another criticism is that I got a bit tired of having noblewomen explain how they aren’t shocked by coarse language. It got boring. Or the overused metaphor that is an understatement that has to be thoroughly explained to be an understatement. It got repetitive. There was no plot. No driving force, except waiting for something to maybe happen that might not actually happen for another 80yrs if someone counted wrong.David Weber writes some great scenes. The emotions he can evoke with his words are deep. Some parts of this book have those moments. But it shouldn’t have been published like this. This was boring and pointless. The stories may have needed to be written, but they shouldn’t have been presented to us the way they were.If you are a long time fan, read it. The voice is there. If you like your reading to have a point? Your time is better spent elsewhere.

I keep thinking that I'm a glutton for punishment because I've found the last several Safehold books to be overstuffed with characters and plots I don't care about, and yet I keep reading because I'm invested in the core group.I'm pleased to say that I found myself skimming less of this book, though there's still some extensive sections in Harchong and Siddarmark that I didn't care as much about -- the Siddarmark sections, in particular, contain what felt like Economics 101 material. This book also spans the years 901 to 916, which means that a good deal more time is covered than in previous books (At The Sign Of Triumph takes place from 897 to 899), so of course Weber needs to remind you how old the various children are so that you can keep track of these things.Did I mention the children? There are multiple pregnancies and births during this book, and several marriages, proving Weber's (recent?) fascination with Babies Ever After. To go into more detail would be too spoileriffic for this review, but if you hated Honor Harrington's pregnancy, you'll probably hate at least one of the pregnancies in this book too. It's ambiguous as to whether Weber has another book planned in this series. The ending here could be a decent one for the series; it certainly provides more of a sense of resolution than many of the others. The religious schism, which came to a conclusion in the previous book, is wrapped up tidily here, but there are still politics and innovations yet to explore on Safehold. We certainly didn't get answers to some of the long-term questions posted, so count me among those tentatively hoping for more.As an aside, either the Kindle version was poorly edited or Weber's editor is truly asleep at the wheel. A character that appears in two different sections (and two sections only) has his name spelled differently in each section; there's another notable misspelling that stood out at me as I was reading it.

This was beyond bad. Endless chatter —and the repetitive banter between characters got old several books ago. Too many flat characters that seemed like clones of prior characters. The book just meandered aimlessly. The early books were good to brilliant. This one, I just started skimming after first 100 pages.

I've read and loved most of David Weber's books, especially Safehold series which is why I was so disappointed after reading this one. The plot is twisting all over the place, with side episodes that aim to provide adrenaline boost but have little to do with main plot. Instead of developing the main plotline further it gets even further diluted. The impression for the whole Safehold series feels like starting as superb wine which then got diluted by abundance of water and vinegar.

Having taught from this book, I think it's a great curriculum to use with students who aren't interested in theory, but would rather know "why are we doing this?" This book branches out into how geometry is found in culture, such as art, and applied in daily living. If you are more interested in answering students' questions about "when are we ever going to use this?" than you are about writing proofs all the time, this is a perfect book for you.

I love mathematics and read math book of all sorts, including textbooks. I teach music theory (which is similar to math) at the college level, and have been doing so for the last 18 years. This is the worst math book I have ever seen. Where are the brillant proofs of Euclid? This is a hodgepodge of history, so-called music, and diverse topics thrown into one book, that consists of mearly formulaes and prove it yourself theorems. The Pythagorean formula is circular, if you can follow it back far enough. There are no concepts or brillant ideas, only "you do it this way" as in the old calculus books. The authors are all school teachers, with one college teacher (wow). The school teachers have been complaining for years about how bad the "new math" was when the mathematicians wrote the texts; now it is their turn and they have turned my child off to math by their dull pedantic book. I think all schools should review this book before using it.

I had to read this for a college class but found the information very outdated. At one point the book tells that 6 million people in the U.S. are on food stamps. On a positive note: the case histories at the beginning of each chapter show a good example of admin law in action.

This is an older book, but its use in Paralegal Studies is by far the best written in this genre of text book. The chapter concepts are concise and clearly stated as well as strongly supported with real life situations with numerous references to historical case law, and current legislation.

Lost paperwork for this rental and there is no way to trace where I rented it from. Any suggestions for me?

Administrative law is not an easy subject but decided to take the course anyways. Thankfully the teacher was much better than the book. We ended up hardly using it, the book as a good amount of information but the way it's written can get a little confusing sometimes although so does the legal world. Overall it's a useful book but must take time to read it thoroughly.

Real-Time Strategy Game Programming Using MS DIRECTX 6.0 (Wordware Game Developer's Library), by Mickey Kawick

Amazon.com Review

Real-Time Strategy Game Programming Using MS DirectX 6.0 should probably be read by any aspiring C/C++ game developer for its real-world perspective on the process of designing successful strategy games. Filled with tips on what works and what doesn't, this book not only provides a perspective on the working lives of game programmers, but it also shows how to simplify working with DirectDraw and DirectSound--two important parts of Microsoft's DirectX game platform--using the author's custom C++ classes. The most interesting aspect of this book has to be its real-world insight on the realities of game development from someone who's been there. (As the author notes, a game programmer's lifestyle offers plenty of challenges, insane work schedules, and, of course, potential rewards.) Early chapters sketch out the game development cycle, from initial idea to proposal, and then onward to staffing, project scheduling, coding, and testing. (If anything, these chapters will demystify how some of your favorite games were designed.) The heart of this book is the author's C++ framework that simplifies DirectX programming using DirectDraw (for 2-D graphics) and later, DirectSound (for sound). The author presents his own code and classes for essential aspects of DirectDraw programming from drawing shapes and images to creating professional animations. Additional sections cover the fundamentals of building strategy games (where players command armies, for instance, and place them on various tiles, or game terrains). There's much expert knowledge here on writing games in this vein, but the principles of animation--plus the reusable C++ code that simplifies DirectX--will certainly justify the price of this book. Written for the C/C++ programmer who wants an introduction to game programming, this is actually more than a technical book. Besides a good introduction to DirectX, this text provides a nuts-and-bolts perspective that shows how some of today's successful games are designed and coded. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: Real-Time Strategy game basics, gameplay, design and project management for games, programming style and tips, Windows programming fundamentals, design documents, the development cycle, macros and data types, DirectX and DirectDraw basics, bitmaps and color modes, drawing lines, rectangles, images and clipping, text output in DirectDraw, loading graphics files, LLE compression, animation overview, AI and characters, animated backgrounds and effects, landscapes, game interfaces, objects and creatures, pathing (BFS, DFS, and A* algorithms), DirectSound.

From Library Journal

Kawick, who has worked on a number of game titles, assumes the reader is wildly interested in real-time strategy (RTS) and real-time tactical (RTT) games and has a strong working knowledge of the C++ programming language. This is not a simple introductory guide, as he covers everything from graphics to artificial intelligence and tile management to game engine design. While useful to advanced-level programmers, the book will also attract ambitious novices who want to learn how to design games. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#3,868,095 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am a amateur game programmer trying to create a RTS-ish game out of Flash AS3. I don't find any of the huge chunks of codes in this book helpful at all so I just skipped through all of them, and quite a few chapters talked about really ancient stuff such as how to employ DirectDraw and DirectSound. That being said, it doesn't mean this book is not of value today. You don't get to hear developers of really famous games(like Age of Empires) talking about how they did their jobs in a everyday basis, do you? Seriously, even a simple interview can get me super excited and now you got an entire book dedicated to that, for only around $1(I bought a used one but its condition is as good as freshly printed, and a lot of sellers are selling at this price), and that's just gold! It's the methodology and ways of thinking that matters the most and you can really get tons out of it, especially for amateurs like me who only had a vague idea of many frequently covered concepts in game programming. Before I found this book I did search a lot on the Internet trying to find a thorough tutorial on RTS making, and to my surprise there really isn't any. I found some forum posts and wikis that sort of scratch the surface but that's about it, nothing like this book. It's not for beginners though, as I said it's mainly the philosophy of game developing you gotta learn from it, not how to write game code from scratch, although some algorithms such as pathfinding are covered. But definately recommended for intermediate learners, minus one star for the obseleteness. Besides, some of the author's opinions are hilarious albeit somehow radical.

The book is fairly out of date at the time I'm writing this, but I had hoped when I picked it up that it would have some valuable tips for writing games that are relatively timeless. The DirectX API has certainly changed a great deal from 6.0 to 9.0, but good game architecture doesn't change much. The book was disappointing. At times it reads like a collection of disjointed articles written by an amateur programmer, and at other times it demonstrates a clear "been there, done that" presence. Many aspects of the book are, simply, annoying. After briefly mentioning the Age of Empires scenario editor, the author writes in a separate note offset from the main text: "I worked on the scenario editor and it is largely the same as I programmed it to be, at least functionally." This self-important commentary does nothing to promote anyone's understanding of game development. The author's programming skills are poor. Other reviewers have said this; no need to beat it into the ground. I get the sense the author was working on tools for the games he worked on, not the games themselves. This comes out in the text: good explanations of the game development process and tools used by animators and developers, but shaky descriptions of game architecture. The choice of topics is a mix of good and bad. The early chapters on planning are very good, but then we get into a very long chapter on painfully optimizing line drawing, complete with a bad clipping algorithm ("Actually I wrote it myself without any help.") The chapter ends with, "but also realize that there isn't much line drawing in games these days", calling into question the purpose of spending so much time on it.It does have a long chapter on pathfinding, which was nice to see.

Beginners, don't pick up this book to learn from! This book is poorly organized, jumping from topic-to-topic. It's a little discouraging for the beginner to pick up a book and see the chapters go from an introduction to a header file full of physics equations. Then it goes on to describe a typical schedule of a programmer, then it goes on to describe topics without much explaination. It's also discouraging to be in chapter 3 and see text referring to a description in chapter 18.If you have an advanced knowledge of C++ you may be able to get through this book with a LOT of patience.

This is an excellent introduction to the difficulties and concepts involved in the creation of RTS/RTT games. It is not a book on how to write games in DirectX. It is not a book about DirectX. The book's stated goal is to describe the process by which RTS/RTT games are created. The author accomplishes the goal with success. While several topics are covered in detail (the path finding section for example), most topics are left alone for further research by the reader as there are well known, well respected books covering these topics (tile sets, resources vs. expenditures, threat levels vs. defensive capabilities, etc.). If you want a book describing how to create a RTS/RTT game, this is a good book. If you need a book on how to code, go elsewhere.

I can't believe how bad this book was. It gives simple concepts and then beats them to death with pages and pages of code. The author only touches on the truly difficult problems and refers the reader to web sites for the real material. He fills the pages with endless prose containing little substance.I bought this used for $5 and I paid too much.
