Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to read mr. Shaw's book yet. I'm still working through other books that I received for Christmas. but I have an immense amount of admiration for mr. Shaw and know that this book will have an impact on me.

What a pleasure to read this book! Mr. Shaw's passion for the music is consistently a theme; the adherence to the values of time, rhythm. intonation, and the composer's intent. His writings are primarily to inform his choruses, but are applicable to anyone leading or singing in an "amateur" volunteer chorus. While in Cleveland, it was my pleasure to sing with him in the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and the Shaker Unitarian Church while in medical school and specialty training. Following him to Atlanta to join the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus was a bonus. While his philosophical writings are well known, so also were his rants when we did not measure up. My kudos to Robert Blocker for his skills in collating Mr. Shaw's life-time opus.

The best way to get to know the master.

This book is a must read and very inspirational for professional musicians and chorus directors alike. I keep coming back to it. Thanks Mr.Shaw!

What an inspiring book. This man did it all and was successful at it. I recommend this to all future and current teachers looking at teaching music of any kind. Rehearsal techniques, great stories, letters, etc.

I got this for my husband, and though he's a fast reader, he still hasn't finished it. There's a lot to learn from in here, and I believe this is an invaluable resource to choral directors.

Sitting glued to radios-later to TV's, we loved the distinctive sounds of early Fred Waring Glee Club; Before we heard any name of their Creator, Robert Shaw. Lots of us sang Waring versions of Christmas Carols; Battle Hymn of the Republic; Onward Christian Soldiers; Dry Bones; surely, Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, not-knowing who created crazy-looking phonetic syllables! We waited until mid-1950's to become aware of Robert Shaw's Collegiate Chorale and its successor the Robert Shaw Chorale. Most of us first heard early RCA records of JOY To The WORLD; A Treasury of EASTER SONGS (with young! picture of RS)++Christmas Hymns & Carols; followed by DEEP RIVER and Spirituals in 1957.Professors Blocker & Page paint vivid pictures of early years of Robert Shaw! Moving on to Chapter 2- THOUGHTS ON MUSIC, SINGING, REAHEARSAL, PERFORMANCE...we're introduced to his fascinating Choral Notes from 1970 to 1996. My favorite section is titled QUIET SINGING and COUNT-SINGING. Anyone lucky enough to sing in his rehearsals was exposed to quiet-singing (above a whisper)-- My good fortune began in Westminster Choral Workshops of 1973, 75, 77, again in 1986 Saratoga Springs, Carmina Burana & Brahms' German Requiem.When Blocker named Shaw's absolute minimum essentials include, (as Caroline spoke to me, He has perfect rhythm; He knows the Time night or day to the minute with no clocks!) "Music is Order in Sound and Time!" Only God knows how many unique singing souls he introduced to permanent essentials ingrained in their music!I must delve into his longest, most valued Chapter of CONDUCTING THE MASTERPIECES! Naturally he starts with Bach's B-Minor Mass and Bach's Passions of St. John and St. Matthew... Added to the longer Masterpieces we find Rachmaninoff's "The Bells" followed by "Liebeslied, Schicksalslied, Nanie" by Brahms! It seems as if anyone writing about Shaw, "Blocker could not escape temptation to include Gustav Mahler, Mozart's Mass in C Minor, Hymns and Christmas Carols, Verdi's Requiem or Poulenc's Stabat Mater!In PREACHING THE GOSPEL(OF THE ARTS) we are graciously gifted by complete texts of 7 speeches given to Memorial Church of Harvard, Choral Societies, Atlanta Emory Lectures. I was deeply shocked to see exact text of his NPR Celebration of Bach's 200th anniversary in 1984, "Worship and the Fine Arts!"In Chap V-CELEBRATIONS OF THE RITUALS OF LIFE we see an intimate 7 page Eulogy for Peter Harrower's Memorial Service. He was one of the great Bass-Baritones of Shaw's Atlanta Symphony Choral Performances and Premier vocal coach of GA State Music Students including my wife, Barbara in the mid-1960s!After first perusing this lengthy biography in B/N one fine day, it took several readings for it to compare favorably with early-"Dear People." I am genuinely impressed to discover this closely intimate account, including Sir Robert's love for sung, written, and even, The Divinely Spoken Word from St. John, Chapter 1... This was a good attempt at something marvelous, unfortunately it is only that: an attempt; the book falls rather short. I dearly wanted to give a very positive review for this book as the premise of it was incredibly promising. I purchased it, and it sat on my bookshelf several months before I opened it beyond a quick peruse of a few pages. Those brief glances at the opening pages only added to my excitement about sitting down with the book later.However, once I actually did get the time to read this book cover to cover, I was immensely disappointed. The three stars given are primarily because the book starts off very strong; the coverage of binary search and the intro to Big-O provides precisely what was promised. Yet, these are only about the first 20 pages. After this beginning, the book becomes somewhat erratic, I cannot for the life of me understand why more of the sorting algorithms were not covered. The only sorts covered are quicksort and selection sort. There is a section titled 'Mergesort vs Quicksort' in which merge sort is only mentioned, not described or explained at all, and this is only a single paragraph; insertion sort gets only a sentence.The book's treatment of recursion is fantastic, but gets at my worst frustration with this book: the author discusses and thoroughly describes basic recursion, providing excellent illustrations of the call stack during execution and tracing the entire execution of a recursive function. At the end of this exercise, he mentions tail recursion (a critical aspect of recursion that more than merited the explanation, which would not have taken much more considering he’d already explained the call stack) and says it's beyond the scope of the book. However, the second half of the book is then dedicated to advanced topics like K-nearest neighbors (solid explanation) and just mentioning things that one would end up studying elsewhere on one's own. A whole chapter is dedicated to Dijkstra's Algorithm (again, solid coverage), which is a somewhat advanced algorithm that benefits from his illustrations and descriptions, but leaves to question, who made the decision to leave out a more complete description of recursion and thorough coverage of searches and sorts in lieu of what at the end seems like filler chapters? Anyone who is at the point of needing to understand those two algorithms likely won't read an illustrated book on the topic; to me, these topics supplant those someone intrigued by the idea of this book might've come seeking.There are errors, but they're no biggie. The very first piece of code in the book contains an omission that causes it to malfunction (setting of the variable 'mid' should divide the sum of 'high' and 'low' by 2). I came to realize it may have been due to a page layout or typesetting issue as I found the same problem in several chapters. It seems the edges of the code are partially covered by images. The coverage of Big-O beyond the intro chapter is a little weak, and only helped because I had some previous knowledge of the concepts surrounding it, and the fact that much of the explanation is repeated several times, so some bits finally sink in. I could see how someone coming to this book hoping to have 'aha' moments about algorithms would be left very lost.The author also uses the technique of describing how something works in a simple way and then a section later taking it all back and saying 'this is really how it works'. I've seen this before, and it can be effective, but a writer must take care the manner in which he simplifies the initial example. This happens rather confusingly in the explanation of hash tables (associative arrays) in relation to their performance. If you're following his description of them, its clear that him saying they return values 'instantly' is somewhat odd particularly when you understand what O(1) actually means. When he follows up to clarify, which he does by describing how hash tables can be slow in some cases, the clarification isn't really satisfying as you didn't really absorb the chapter wondering if perhaps you missed something before since hash tables were glowingly described as the data structure to end all data structures. He then goes into discussing (incompletely) the implementation of hash tables, which he keeps saying 'you'll never have to do'. He then trails off with a brief description of things to consider when using them without really implementing a hash table in code as suggested (examples 'using' hash tables are given, but the mention of 'implementing' them comes after this and indicates an upcoming example which never materializes).I wrote this review only as a warning. The implementation of the book is a solid 2 stars considering the price; the first half gets it to 3. The book is about 50% as described, 50% the author seemingly trying to prove he has a CS degree. Perhaps friends told him the book was too simplistic. Unfortunate. The heavy appearance of 5 star reviews here greatly misled me. Reading them afterward, it seems most are praising the idea of the book and not its actual execution. Had I read it during the return period, I would have returned it. I am a intermediate-level programmer. I understood most of these topics at a basic level beforehand. I ordered this book because I had been recommending it to others, who wanted to learn about algorithms from scratch, as the premise of it sounded excellent. I finally decided to read it myself since I've been raving about it for the last year; I wish I had read it first. It's a fun read, but don't expect any epiphanies. If you're a beginner, you're actually better off searching "basic sorting/searching algorithms" online and learning from YouTube videos until you can grasp the content of a college textbook (or one of the programming interview prep books which cover algorithms very thoroughly without the math of a university text). This book starts off great, but finishes more like a set of blog posts written over the course of a year, by a person who couldn't wait to prove to you how smart he was becoming day by day. I know many times a project can start off as one thing, and then after input by many people and via your own desires to do something great, lose its way; it seems that may have happened here with the author deciding that the basic algorithms were too mundane, and choosing to try and explain more impressive concepts which somewhat ironically, are ‘beyond the scope of this book’.

I've taken 2 undergraduate level courses on data structures and algorithms. I've written several programs that were assigned to me in order to demonstrate my mastery of the concepts explicated in this book, and yet I always felt I had a very superficial grasp of these ideas. Enough to pass a test; that is enough to reword the explanations or definitions provided to me in my course's official texts, but never enough truly grasp it.This book was incredible for me. But it if you've trudged through algorithms courses before and feel like you barely gleaned anything.

I'm not big on rating things, but I had to for this amazing book. This is by far the best introduction to algorithms out there, especially if you have not encountered them before. If you're a dev new to coding from some other field and lack a CS background, start here. If you are a VISUAL LEARNER, start here. If you like light, easy text to get acquainted with an idea, start here. If you want to learn the basics and learn them well, start here. After you read this book you'll be ready for the more dense ones.

Just my opinion - I thought it was a little too advanced for a "true" beginner (i.e. at 53 going back to school full time for CS after gulp 30 yrs). Might be best for those with a tad more recent schooling or experience. Having said that its well organized and well written. I suspect after my first semester and getting back into the "groove of things", it will suite my needs more than it currently does. I would also make a suggestion to the author to create a video/on-line course (i.e. udacity, lynda, etc).

This book takes a very stripped down, illustrated approach to introducing some basic algorithms and programming concepts. It's a broad, shallow dive, but is quick and easy to understand for what it covers, esp compared to going directly to the math or reading dense text. Good if you like illustrations & visual examples, and if you want only a cursory introduction to the concepts and examples of a few well-known useful algorithms. It sort of adopts the approach of the "Head First" series with little cartoons and hand-drawn examples & conceptual illustrations. It does seem a bit like class notes and is *too* simplified to really be of much practical use though.I'd say probably start here if you're totally new to the topic, and/or only want some bare-bones laymen's explanations.After this, look at Jay Wengrow's "Common Sense Guide to Data Structures and Algorithms" from Pragmatic Programmers, which is similar to this book, but walks through its examples and implementations in (a little) more depth.

These books are beautifully illustrated works of art...as far as I'm concerned, this is a must for lovers of Rumi!

It is a book that engenders inspiration and contemplation. The above questions don't really fit well as it is a book of poetry and some prose.I love the book.

This is a beautiful book with thoughtful and eyepleasing art work reflecting the gentle yet so meaningful poetry of Rumi. The accompanying disk is a delightful range of blue grass style songs that are nectar to the ears. I had seen this book or one like it when I was travelling about 5 years ago and it had left an indellible impression. I wasn't sure if I was buying the same thing, but this book is so delightful and nourishing that I am sure it must be the same book - I dont care now anyway, because what I have bought is the perfect package.

 For anyone who's just starting out drawing manga style, this book provides useful information on colouring.Different colouring tools are introduced. Each are explained on their characteristics and tips on using them.The featured artists in this series are Saya Iwasaki, Hiroki Mafuyu, Ayumi Kasai, Hamlet Okinawa, Renji Murata, Kim Jyung-Tae and Houden Eizo. These artists goes through tips on their colouring process with their tools: markers, coloured ink, water colour, acrylic paint and digital colouring. These are step by step tutorials with detailed captions.Additionally, there are Q&A interviews with some of the artists.Right at the end is a gallery containing illustrations created from a variety of medium. These are from other manga artists.This book is a great book for beginners. Awesome a technique building book and hints :) not so good for beginners but great for those wanting to brush up on their style :) and knowledge . Great for the price I bought it used ! It came in sooo super new looking in great condition and came on time :)

Finally, a really good tutorial/art book on manga and copic art in English! Lately, some of the best looking copic tutorial books are in Japanese. And, yes, I understand Copic markers are Japanese in origin and make. But still, it would be nice if they would publish those tutorial books in English so we can read them too. There are many English spearkers who want good books to teach them to use Copics and other mediums and it sucks when all the best books are only in Japanese. Has some good tips and tutorials for using Copics and layering and such and also explains other mediums and gives pros and cons as well as section of varied art submissions from all over the world, so is like half Tutorial, half Art book. One of the better ones with lots of color pictures. A worthy buy if you want to know more about using popular mediums and also get to see some examples of different work using those mediums.

In my opinion, I love this book because it gives an artist plenty of time to develop his/her own manga style while looking at how other people color.While I'm more familiar with concept art and illustrations; not so much on the manga side, I was excited to see that I did recognize a few artists in the book (Houden Eizou, Renji Murata, and even Hyung Tae Kim).The book encompasses a large variety of ways to color manga, so if you're looking for a way to draw or lay down more specific details, I don't think this is the correct book for you (unless you'd like some really awesome references to look at, which this book does provide). It gives more of examples and art pieces to look at than an actual process or thing for you to go through. What I think is the main idea is to give you some space, make your own work, and learn how to color your work while observing others' artwork (thus the "Hot New Talent" section).While it doesn't actually provide much instruction on the painting process or anything, it does give you an idea how several kinds of colors work. This includes markers to watercolors to acrylics and even pigments. I'm sure that I'll be really excited to try out coloring my traditional manga-style works now, since it tells you exactly what is better for mixing, drying, or being transparent.Really recommend this to any manga-fan or artist who'd like to see the "behind the scenes" for those manga artists and maybe read how their thought process goes.

This book does do a nice job of talking about paints vs markers and gives some techniques on how to use them but about half of the book is a gallery which is beautiful but not expected in a "tools and techniques" book. There is plenty of beautiful manga on the Internet to look at for free... I was hoping for more instruction and less gallery.

For the title of my review...I believe it helps to know who this is good for. This is based soley on my own personal view of my ability, so that you may gauge it for yourself.I am a self taught artist and believe I need no further skill development in many areas of artistic creation. That said, Comickers Art is a great book and worth the money I paid for it.This book covers the basics of many materials, styles, procedures and methods. It is great information for those who already have a good foundation in artistic talent but are always on the lookout to learn the ways of others in hopes of being more efficient, or just learning new ways.Comickers Art books are for refining skills and knowledge and is not meant to teach you how to draw. These books showcase beautiful and genuine artwork and talent from the east.

It's a decent book for those starting in drawing anime/manga. What I enjoyed was the the variation of artist and art styles that I don't usually see in other books like these.

I was very excited to get this book, hoping to learn to color better. However the instructions were pretty useless considering how bad the translation was... I can only guess from the picture what the artist is doing..... this is quite frustrating... very.... The only redeeming quality is the beautiful artworks contained in these pages. My advice is - if you're seriously trying to learn to color don't get this book, or if you can decipher the cryptic english get it! I really wish I know Japanese! >sigh<

It has nice printing of all the works bot is not actualy TEACHING something, good to look at, but not quite what I was looking for, I wanted more intructions, tecnical knowlage, not just looking at the nice work someone else acomplished.It gives a good advice on what to buy do... unusual material and popular one in the artistic medium.

Lower down the market capitalization charts are many more successful companies using this model, too.The matchmaker business model is hardly a new development. A mall is an example, attracting and enabling various buyers and sellers to interact. A magazine or newspaper attracts readers through its journalism, which attracts advertisers.However, matchmaker business models are much more complicated than they appear, and have been misunderstood by business people and economists.Conventional businesses buy inputs from suppliers, and transform them in some way into either goods or services, that can be sold to customers. Here the key is to attract customers, and sell to them profitably. The tasks of matchmaker platforms, is to attract two or more types of participants by enabling them to trade with each other on attractive terms. The inputs of matchmakers are primarily their participants.Until recently, economists didn’t have models for how these businesses worked. Most investors during the dotcom bubble, for example, lost astronomical amounts of money through the application of criteria that simply didn’t fit this category. Traditional economics holds, for example, that it’s never profitable to sell products at less than cost; there is a first-user advantage; and critical mass is essential – ‘just find the eyeballs and we will find a way to monetize it.’In 2014, Jean Tirole received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for important contributions to economic understanding, including his insights into the new economics of multisided platforms. Understanding multisided platforms allows businesses to assess their viability, and then to structure the business model appropriately.‘OpenTable’, a free mobile app, enables you to find and make restaurant bookings anytime, anywhere. You do not have to worry about opening hours, or phoning numerous restaurants to enquire about availability, or to view the menu. ‘Free’ wasn’t OpenTable’s temporary, opening promotion; it hasn’t ever charged. Diners are so valuable to the model that OpenTable finds and actually ‘pays’ them through rewards for using the service.The matchmakers suffer from the chicken-and-egg problem. You can’t have chickens without eggs, but you need chickens to get eggs. A matchmaking platform can’t attract diners without restaurants, but no hungry consumer would use a reservation system that had no restaurants available.As recent history has shown, most matchmaker start-ups don’t survive. “Now economists know why multisided platforms can create immense value, and how they do it, and also why most matchmaker start-ups sputter and die,” explain the authors, David Evans and Richard Schmalensee, both highly respected economists.Once the complex network effects of these businesses are understood, economists started investigating the pricing models that these firms should use, to maximize their profits. These groups range from the ‘desperate to meet’ (the supermarket in the mall,) and the ‘would be nice to meet’, (the shopper). The supermarket pays to be in the mall, and may even subsidise the shopper’s parking so she can be in the mall completely free, even if the shopper shops elsewhere too.The authors identify critical issues in designing and starting a multisided platform. Uber offers an accessible example.The Matchmakers succeed when they identify difficulties that hinder the various parties from dealing with each other directly. If you need a taxi in a hurry, but your small taxi company doesn’t have cabs available in your area, Uber provides a solution. If there aren’t many people needing rides, or there aren’t many people with cars willing to sell rides, you could not get a ride when you need one: the chicken-and-egg problem. Uber doesn’t have to own cars; only an enabling technology, to be able it to grow chickens and have eggs rapidly and simultaneously.Low prices are always great for one side of the platform, (the person needing a ride), but not for the other, (the driver.) By keeping overheads low, all players in the multisided-platform win.Matchmaking is always part of broader ecosystems of competing providers, regulations, and other institutions. Uber needs to navigate the problem of not being classified as either a taxi or an employer. Uber needs to fend off the antagonism of cab drivers who are seeing their clientele disappear. Uber is assisted by harsh drunk-driving laws, that encourage passengers to get a ride rather than drive intoxicated.Matchmakers have to be concerned with the manner in which participants on the platform interact with each other. Many of these businesses have adopted governance systems, complete with ‘laws,’ ‘enforcers, and ‘penalties.’ Uber passengers are encouraged to rate the drivers’ manners and driving ability. Poor driving will result in the driver being withdrawn from the system, and abusive passengers will be excluded from using the service.It is the explosion of specific technologies that is behind the remarkable growth of multisided-platforms, the authors explain.Uber’s costs of connecting to their various constituencies are negligible. The internet can connect some 3 billion people world-wide, which is over 40% of all people on earth. Rapid transmission of messages in all forms is now possible, through the ever-faster mobile internet connection. Drivers’ and passengers’ locations can be identified instantly through GPS systems and communication between all players in real time.“When Uber decided to expand from San Francisco to Brussels, it didn’t have to build a physical distribution facility, or even hire a stable of dispatchers to handle calls and direct drivers,” Evans and Schmalensee report. After reading a summary and watching a CNBC interview with the author, I was looking forward to reading Matchmakers. I was looking for "business insight" and not a "multisided platforms are really interesting" book. Unfortunately, the book is short on insight and extremely repetitive (authors must have been encouraged by the publisher to gross up the page count). This book reads like a 20 page business journal article that someone wanted turned into a 200 page book. If you know nothing about multisided platforms, maybe this is a good book for you to skim. If you are looking for business insight, this is likely not the book for you.

This is a very useful book as it really thrives in bridging from old economy's microeconomics to the world of multi-sided platforms. Compared with other books about the current hype, the analysis performed in this book is carefully crafted and very compelling and interesting.

Great insights in this book which makes it an interesting read. The only improvement I would wish for is the overall readability - it flips between examples and then comes back to them at different parts of the book, when the point being made is largely the same.Would still recommend it, especially for employees and employers in established industries, which are bound to be transformed by multi-sided platforms, if not already.

An easy read that provides a clear view of the first-order issues in multi-sided markets.

His preparation for each game centers less on the opponent and more on singling out one player on his own team to lift that player's game. His simple, direct message gets through."Next Play," "Confidence Breeds Courage," "Collective Responsibility" and other catch-phrases of K's apply not only to basketball but to business and to life.How many coaches after winning the National Championship would bring their team back into the locker room two days later to remind them that the Lessons of the Fist (for what those are you have to read the book) apply not only to basketball but to life? How many, in the same meeting, would goad their players to excel not only on the basketball court but in the classroom and in life?This is a book to treasure.

In Five Point Play, Coach Mike Krzyzewski tries to teach the 2001 Duke basketball team about not only basketball, but life too. By setting examples for the team, Coach shows his players the results of communication, trust, care, responsibility, and pride, the same points that helped them win the national championship. "Coach K" has a crew of talented coaches and players that include Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer and many more. I like the way that Coach Krzyzewski put this book together, by explaining every pep talk, describing every huddle, and giving the details of every game. Although I wouldn't recommend this book to a North Carolina fan, I hope that every other basketball fan gets a chance to read Five Point Play.

As an avid Duke fan I may be a bit biased, but I felt the book was great with a lot of good insight into the behind the scenes day to day operation of a big time college basketball program. Showing how Coach K relates to each individual in a unique way is interesting.

Book review of "Five-Point Play" "Five-Point Play" by Mike Krzyzewski with Donald T. Phillips is an inspirational story of Dukes journey to the 2001 National Championship. Through the book you will find Coach K's schemes that helped lead the team towards their goals. Also the way he connects his players and his own emotions towards the journey in the book is very entertaining. There are many things I enjoyed about the book, but one thing I liked a lot about it was how often he used personal quotes from himself, other coaches, and players to connect you with there journey. Such quotes like at the end of the book after they have won the championship he says, "I just tried to sing my own song for this year's performance and not worry about things. It made me healthier and helped me coach for the right reasons. I had the most incredible year that I've had with a group of kids. I can't stop smiling." You can always get media and other people's opinions on what happened, but when you get there personal quotes, you can actually see what they went through to reach their goals. Another reason I loved reading the book was discovering Coach K's elaborate plans and schemes to get players to build off each other and off their situations. But his main principle is the "Five-Point Play"; Communication, Trust, Collective Responsibility, Caring, and Pride. He has many other amazing schemes, but to get into detail you would have to read it yourself. Those are just a few reasons why you could get to liking this book. It's a very inspirational journey and you can find tools that Coach K uses for yourself in everyday life. Also you're never going to loose background or information in the story because of all the personal quotes and information. It is a very enjoyable book and I recommend it.

Coach K relives the 2000-2001 championship season. Future NBA players Shane Battier and Mike Dunleavy lead Duke to wins over Maryland and Arizona to win his third national championship. Sorry to be sparse on details, but it's been almost 15 years since I read it.Duke fans, it's just past Coach K's 1000th victory, why not get this now?

Five-Point Play is the perfect companion to the 2000-2001 Basketball Season. I received the book from Amazon two days ago, and managed to read it in just a couple of hours. However, the primary difference is that in this book, Coach K follows the season in chronological order, with descriptions of practices and in-game situations. There are also several quotes from the players, coaches and staff that are inserted during these situations that further illuminate the different perspectives on the team. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book describe, in great detail, the team's psyche when Carlos suffered his foot injury and the team's subsequent shift in offensive and defensive strategies. In reality, there was a signifcant amount of doubt that the team would be able to be competitive by practically everyone on the team-- including Coach K! Fortunately, the Duke Blue Devils overcame this obstacle (among many others) and surged towards the National Championship.

I really liked this book, I only read it because I was curious. As many people here, I too have had a bad childhood. Abandoned in a catholic orphanage at age 3 until 11....then in an abusive foster family. As a child I really never knew what it would be like to be loved and belong to a family. But I am now 62 and have my own family. It is amazing how wonderful my children have turned out. I have had a counselor tell me that lit is not possible to have a wonderful family after a childhood like mine. But I will say "Through Him anything is possible" I have been married for 40 years. I have to say I put many of these principles from this book to work. I never had a victim mentality. I decided at 18 after I left the foster family, that I would not look back and I am now in charge of my own life. But I was angry with God for allowing me to go through that type of childhood. Now looking back I can see how He was there for me. I will not get into detail. But the book has many good ideas that I can honestly look back and say I did that and things worked out for me. If you had a bad childhood I would highly recommend it.

This book saved my life, and when I say that I am not over emphasizing. I was headed into self destruction, and was given this book. It had given me the tools to deal with all of the past I didn't know how to handle, and she's so tough and straight forward it really got through. I am not one for self help books but this book was amazing, purchased it for several others since. There were times when I opened the book and threw it after reading because she was right. I couldn't help but continue to pick it back up and finish because I was finally getting through what needed to heal. It took me 2 very long years to finish it only because of what I needed to deal with, but it gave me myself back and helped me to live outside of the trauma I had experienced! It has stopped defining me, I highly recommend it.

I have battled to understand the symptoms of Bad Childhood in those closest to me for years without realising the underlying cause. This book clearly articulates the situations giving rise to these patterns of behaviours, and how they go on to manifest in adult life, as the wounded child facilitates the intergenerational transferrance of the pain onto the innocent parties surrounding them. This book has been a godsend to me, and I trust will be similarly to others. It is a revelation which has allowed me to discover that I am not insane, as I previously imagined myself to be.

I absolutely love this book. I have a copy already and it has so many things that are highlighted, and I have notes in the margins! Anytime anyone asks me if they can borrow it, I buy them their own copy. :) It's so good I'd rather they had it on their shelf and have the ability to mark theirs up like I have! I've read this book several times.

I always get inspiration from reading Dr. Laura's books - plus a good swift kick in the pants to move forward with life.I used this book as a workbook; I would read a little and then stop to journal my thoughts and feelings, connecting what I learned to my circumstances. I found that extremely beneficial.

I think my biggest take away from this book is that i can't wait for my feelings to change before I change my actions. Pain from a bad childhood will never truly go away. One must be resilient and choose to behave as though I have a good life, which I do, instead of ruining it by focusing on the pain of the past and waiting for my feelings to change. If I wait for my feelings to change I will only succeed at repeating history. Highly recommend.

The tone of this book starts out a bit differently than some of Dr. Laura's other books, and I was afraid it wouldn't be as good, helpful, or focused (i.e., less helpful). Those fears were proven unfounded!There were so many letters and calls referenced in the book that reminded me of my upbringing, and as the pace and flow of the book picked up, I couldn't put it down--until I came to the part about a woman who had been told by her mother that she wished she'd aborted her: My mother once told me the same thing (as well as the fact that she wished I'd never been born, was useless, lazy, dumb, etc., ad nauseum), but the only reason she hadn't was because it was illegal at the time and she feared for HER safety (no such concern for the safety of the little tiny person inside her). It is no exaggeration to say Dr. Laura really helped me realize that no matter how much parental love is needed, not everyone parents their children. Some people are little more than sperm- and egg-donors; some parents are just selfish, mean, evil jerks, and will always be so, and there is strength to be found in facing the fact that they will never apologize or even acknowledge any hurt or wrongdoing on their part. Further, that it is generally healthier NOT to forgive them, because that is merely the final insult to a child (of any age) who has been hurt and damaged by a parent--that the abuser is absolved of all responsibility and treated as if it never happened.If you even THINK you might turn into your abusive, selfish, evil, jerky parents, please buy this book for your children's sake, and break the cycle of pain.

Don't need a book to explain that you can have a good life with a not so good childhood. Have God in your life and you can't go wrong.
