Review

One of the Boston Globe’s Best Books of The Year“The first Gary Pomerantz book I read was his biography of Wilt Chamberlain, which I thought was magnificent. Then I read Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn, which I haven't stopped thinking about. Now I've lost myself in The Last Pass. The danger with reading Gary Pomerantz is that you'll become an addict.” – Malcolm Gladwell“An important statement about America’s social consciousness a half-century ago, and our own today. But it is also a dual biography of the two men who dominated Boston sports at a time when the Red Sox were pitiful, the Bruins even worse and the Patriots unworthy of discussion in polite company." — David Shribman, The Wall Street Journal “A master class. Students of NBA history are in awe these days, marveling at the depth of Gary Pomerantz’s new book. . . . [Pomerantz] is a master of exquisite detail. He has produced two of the finest sports books ever written, on Wilt Chamberlain (Wilt, 1962) and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ dynasty (Their Life’s Work). For fans of the Warriors, trying to become the first team since those Celtics to reach five straight Finals, there is invaluable perspective on how a great team sustains its brilliance.” — San Francisco Chronicle  “The Last Pass surely stands as one of the most intriguing sports books in recent memory, and maybe of all time.” —Christian Science Monitor  “The Last Pass does what has become frighteningly rare in sports writing: it hypnotizes you with a great narrative.” — Mike Wilbon“An unbelievable read…A really deep dive into not only what matters most, but also the NBA as it has evolved and become more inclusive and progressive.” — Brad Stevens, head coach of the Boston Celtics“Basketball fans will want to read this exciting, affecting book, but even non-sports fans of all ages will enjoy the combination of sports, history, and biography.” — Library Journal, starred review  “In this eloquent biography…Pomerantz tells a moving story of a pivotal time in basketball history.” — Publisher’s Weekly “Pomerantz explores the complicated relationship between Russell and Cousy, both superstars but playing in a world where pervasive racism diminished the contributions of one man while elevating those of another. Cousy sees this dynamic now in a way he didn't then, and his reflections on what happened to Russell and the inadequacy of Cousy's response drive this poignant memoir, the lessons from which extend far beyond sport.” — Booklist, starred review   “Professional sports has been a powerful lens for viewing the complexity and challenges created by our nation's history of racial inequality. This fascinating read and sobering exploration of one of the most dominant teams in sports history reveals much about the hope, frustration and legacy of our continuing struggle with racial injustice.” – Bryan Stevenson, author, Just Mercy   “I was certain I knew most everything about the great Russell-Cousy Celtics dynasty – until I sat down and read The Last Pass. The gifted Gary Pomerantz masterfully unearths a mesmerizing subplot to the relationship between two complex Hall of Famers who played side-by-side during one of the most tumultuous racial climates in our country’s history. Cousy’s candor, steeped with regret over his stilted relationship with Russell, leaps off the pages. A beautifully crafted, compelling story that captures the emotions of celebrated teammates who made history together but, in the sunset of their lives, navigate their legacy alone.” – Jackie MacMullan, co-author, When The Game Was Ours   “The story of these two great athletes, Cousy and Russell, is really a story about America, about friendship, about grace. Beautifully written, prodigiously reported, and touched throughout with powerful emotion, the book is a marvel of nonfiction writing. The Last Pass ranks with the best books ever written about basketball.” – Jonathan Eig, author, Ali: A Life   “The author's reportage and research are thoroughly up to the stuff of the standard sports biography, but the narrative acquires its greatest force when, long after the events described, Cousy expresses regret that he didn't do more to support Russell: "I [ran] into literally my first angry black man….I think this simply scared me off." Nor has Russell mellowed—and nor should he. A moving, maddening look at a storied partnership that might have been a beautiful friendship as well.” — Kirkus“I’ve known Bob Cousy for almost 50 years. He’s not one for showing or telling who he is. But he showed and told Gary Pomerantz, and the result is this touching book.”  – Tom Callahan, author of Arnie: The Life of Arnold Palmer  “I can’t say I've ever encountered a book quite like this. It’s essentially the biography of one famous man consciously rethinking his relationship with another famous man, and issuing an apology. It’s also a detailed portrait of the early NBA, and the writing style is exactly what you want—clear, understated, and as efficient as the players he describes. All historical writing should aspire to this." – Chuck Klosterman, author of But What If We're Wrong?   “I've always liked a little moss to grow on the statues of legends. What did these people do? Where did they fit? How did it all come out in the end? Here are Bob Cousy and Bill Russell, basketball's version of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, caught in the twilight of their days, preserved in print by Gary Pomerantz. Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful.” – Leigh Montville, author of Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero “Basketball fans know Bob Cousy as a Hall of Famer. People who know the fight for racial equality know him as one too. In The Last Pass, Gary Pomerantz uncovers Cousy’s final testament on race in America. This book goes to the heart of the civil rights struggle. It is as thrilling as any buzzer-beating shot.”  – Juan Williams, author of Eyes on the Prize – America’s Civil Rights Years

To truly know… the history of the NBA… you must intimately know the roads traveled and the championships won by the Boston Celtics… and the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers… and their shining stars… that have shown above all others. This book is about the Boston Celtics… and the original NBA showman… Bob “Da-Cooz” Cousy… and among many other things… his relationship with the greatest winner in basketball history… Bill “Big-Russ” Russell… during their playing days… and long afterward as “Da-Cooz” at ninety-years-old…now tries to come to grips with his conscience.Basketball has been involved in the major part of my entire life. When I first got hooked on playing in park leagues… it was right around the tail end of Cousy’s career… as I advanced to Junior High Leagues… then High School Leagues… then Junior College Leagues… Military Leagues… and more… it was mainly Bill Russell’s continued reign. I had a tremendous “LOVE-HATE” relationship with the Celtics. I hated them because I was a Laker fan… and it seemed every year during Cooz and/or Russ’ dominance… they beat the Lakers in the finals. But… I loved the way they played! They were…. to this day… the greatest true “team” playing “team”… I ever saw. Though I hated them I studied every one of their players intimately. I learned my “bank-shot” from Sam Jones… I learned rebounding from Russ… I learned defense from K.C… I learned to appreciate passing (though not a lot about me actual passing) and field generalship from the master “Da Cooz. I learned how to “gun” from Heinsohn… I imitated Satch Sanders shooting style… and though I was right handed… I finished each practice shooting left handed free throws like Russ. I also learned how to hate Red Auerbach lighting up his victory cigars… and yet till this day I think he was the greatest coach ever. I even read his international bestselling book on basketball fundamentals. What this book does is take you from the New York ghetto where Cousy grew up… shares in great detail his family history of a Mother who physically abused his Father… and hated Germans from her life in France… and how Da Cooz not only became a three time All-American at Holy Cross… but became one of the greatest players in NBA history. He played for the Celtics from 1950-63 and won six straight NBA titles. Before Cousy’s arrival the savior of the NBA had been big George Mikan who led the Minneapolis Lakers to multiple titles. Joining Cousy in Boston midway through Da Cooz’s career was Big Bill Russell… who continued the Celtics dominance (that in my opinion will never be matched) to eventually total ELEVEN-NBA-CHAMPIONSHIPS-IN-THIRTEEN-YEARS! Add to Russ’s stats… the fact that he won two NCAA titles with USF… and a gold medal with the United States in the Olympics… and you can see why I said he’s the winningest basketball player in history! The heart… literally the guts… the goal of this book… is Cousy attempting to come to peace with himself in his waning years… did he??? Could he??? Why didn’t he???... Do enough… if not more… to help Bill Russell cope with the terrible racism that Russell and other black teammates had to face in Boston and other areas. Complicating this issue… is the fact that… perhaps not clearly seen by the outside world… was the fact that Cooz and Russ were not close at all… off the court… yet they were… one of the greatest winning teammate combinations on it. They were a well-oiled synchronized creation of basketball victory. The author has done a ton of research recreating what it was like not only back in the day… but also Cousy’s current life with his echoing rooms in his large house… filled with the memories of his dear departed wife of over sixty-years… Missie. The parts of the story that revolve around Red Auerbach are absolutely classic… his bombastic Brooklyn street-fighting moxie… along with his psychology… and his drive to integrate basketball like never before. On top of all this… as a sports book… is that the author Gary M. Pomerantz… has such a beautiful writing style… that at times you forget it’s a sports book… and just start appreciating and absorbing the prose. As an example… the haunting book jacket cover picture of a young Cooz and Russ… taken before a big game… is described in both a lingering and illuminating narrative. If I may share one of countless phrasings that the author seems to effortlessly use to raise this book to a high standard of literature: “Let us see Cousy as he was on Boston Garden’s parquet floor, in his white home jersey set off by CELTICS 14 in Kelly green. He looked quintessentially French with his long, thin face, dark features, and deep-set eyes. For much of any game, his face was impassive. But seldom was it impassive for an entire game. In moments that mattered most, the mask came off, replaced by a game face, drawn tight for battle. He often moved with a captain’s strut and an artist’s impatience. Maybe he saw a referee miss a call. A teammate might have fumbled a pass. At those moments, Cousy could be a demanding master.”Yes… Da Cooz… and Big Russ… were quite different… except in one way… and that’s when it came to doing what it took to win! Here’s the deepest… purest insight… from teammate Tom Heinsohn:“HEINSOHN SAT BETWEEN COUSY AND RUSSELL. HE WATCHED THE TWO MEN CLOSELY AND NOTED A COMMON TRAIT. “THEY TOOK SO MUCH OUT OF THEMSELVES,” HEINSOHN SAYS. “I DIDN’T HAVE THIS DRIVE TO BE THE WORD’S GREATEST LIKE THEY DID. TO WIN AN NBA TITLE, HEINSOHN THOUGHT, THEY’D KILL THEIR MOTHERS.”A tremendously written and researched book… and you’ll even learn why the only person in the world other than Red Auerbach’s wife… who called Auerbach “Arnold” was Da Cooz!

This is a wonderful tale of basketball's greatest era, and those who made it that way: Cousy, Russell, and the Celtics. The author's main thrust is with Cousy, and the book doesn't suffer one iota for it. He goes over many individuals and aspects of the game, surpassing his work in 'Wilt: 1962.' You feel like you come to know and understand Cousy and Russell, and come to admire them as men, not just basketball legends. A must for those who enjoy basketball history.

Bob Cousy was one of the early greats of the National Basketball Association that contributed to the growth of the league through the 1950s and 1960s and his Boston Celtics led the way as the dominant team in the league. The book concentrates on Cousy and his superstar teammate Bill Russell but also contains anecdotes on other greats of the Celtic dynasty. Both Cousy and Russell contributed to the Celtics through unique means. Cousy was not universally agreed upon as the team's number one choice in the draft and Russell came to the team through a risky trade that sent Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan to the St. Louis Hawks in exchange for the Hawks's second choice in the draft with Boston hoping that Russell would still be available for them. The book covers Cousy's family life of his parents in addition to his wife and two daughters. Bill Russell dealt with racism in Boston and really had no love for the city due to the disgusting things he had to put up withIn his later life Bob Cousy felt pangs of guilt for not speaking out in support of Bill Russell during his playing days and hoped to be able to patch things up for any omissions of support which Cousy, in his mind, felt he had neglected to do. Cousy dealt with the dementia of his wife and other teammates passing away as his own life lingered on. The difficulties that Cousy has been facing are also those faced by millions of others as age takes its toll on people.I only followed professional basketball as a fan of the St. Louis Hawks during the 1960s so I enjoyed reading about many of the famous names in the N.B.A. during that time period and found the book to be a very enjoyable read. It will have a prominent place in my library.

I figured when I purchased this book I was in for a ride down memory lane. For starters, I was 13 years old and growing up in Marion, IN, a hot-bed of high school basketball when the NBA started play. Few people I talk to realize that in the first two years of the NBA Indiana had three teams in the league. They were the Anderson Duffy Packers, the Indianapolis Olympians and the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons. My home town was close enough that I was able to see several of the games that featured stars that laid the groundwork for what the NBA is today. Of course, that groundwork included Bob Cousy and Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics. I was so pleased that this great book took me behind the scenes and into the personal lives of Cousy and Russell. Readers will be fascinated with exchanges between players, locker room talk, game discussions, situations with coach Red Auerbach and dozens of other items from the early years of the NBA. It was interesting to read what Cousy and Russell are doing now in the twi-light of their lives. If you love reading about how the NBA got started and the great players, especially those on the Celtics, you will be enthralled with this book. For example, Cousy mentions the effect of the 24 second shot clock that saved pro basketball. This took place in 1954, my senior year in high school. I can recall when games first appeared on TV. All in all, The Last Pass was a trip down memory lane for me as I was lucky to see so much of the development of the NBA of which Cousy and Russell were so much a big part. I would recommend this book to any basketball fan interested in knowing more about Cousy, Russell, the Celtics and the early developmental years of the NBA.Norman Jones, Ed. The only reason for four stars instead of five is due to the cost. Otherwise, I think it is a very good book to include in your collection if you are getting into trading options. While other books provide detailed explanations of strategies, how they work, what to avoid, etc., this book provides a different perspective on each type of strategy. The beginning of the book provides an overview of definitions/terms and what types of calls/puts are good for various types of investors. Where this book differentiates itself from other books is that it gives a little detail about the various types of trades (or strategies). Each trade overview provides bulleted points about the setup of the trade, who should run it (such as some trades should only be done by experience folks rather than newbies), when to run it (such as during a bear or bull market) and the strategy itself. I like looking at a quick glance to see what types of options (no pun intended) are good for me being a new options trader. Then I can read on it here and look for that type of trade in other books that I have purchased for possibly some additional information or information from another's perspective.Great book.

PURCHASED: June 16, 2016.As an experienced trader (of not just Options), I found this to be a neat "table" reference. It's on my bookshelf and serves as a means to occasionally confirm the potential options strategy (or strategies) being tossed around in my mind. It's also a good easy reference to confirm what someone else is saying about their trade or strategy no matter how complex it is.WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT IT - HUGE printed pages, large diagrams, very easy to read, straightforward. Tons of option plays described in good basic detail - like a neat massive a "Rolodex" card file of option plays. In the grand scheme of things, it's cheaper than a single $0.15 stock option contract, AFTER commissions...and it doesn't expire - so what's there to lose, eh?WHAT's NOT SO GREAT ABOUT IT - HUGE printed pages - that is, in some ways I wish I got the Kindle edition! It would be much easer to search, as well as handle the Kindle Edition. Then again, my eyes aren't so good anymore, and I still like flipping paper pages (reminds me why I'm not a Millennial). Also, it's pretty basic and straightforward - for an experienced trader, it is basic, straightforward, and kinda dull...nothing new here. (But then again for an experienced trader, its a good reminder of all the varieties of option plays out there.)

In my opinion this book is excellent for new traders but I do not see a lot in it for more more experienced traders familiar with more complex strategies. The author is the senior analyst for Trade King so at times drifts into some plugs for the broker. However the writer has written a basic informative book with little dashes of humor and personality. What you get with this book is a over sized glossy book bound like a very large spiral note book. I personally find the size of this book cumbersome. The book contains 40 basic option strategies for different market environments. You have plays for betting with the bulls, bears, or on range bound markets. There are strategies for profiting from capital gains on stocks, stocks going down, or delta neutral strategies for profiting on theta (time value deterioration) in options you have sold short. Each strategy defines:The Break even at expiration. The Sweet Spot for maximum potential profit. The maximum potential loss. The possible margin requirement for each play.It explains the effect of time decay for each of the plays. The effects of changing implied volatility on each play. The book also has option guy's tips on each play.At the beginning of the book the author takes the time to explain every term used in options trading from the terms put and call all the way to the Greeks. He does a great job of explaining the pit falls of low volume options and the right time frames to play for different legs of his plays. You will learn all the players in the option game and how to properly roll your option playsExcellent and easy to read and understand, step by step guide book for new option traders. Will be redundant for experienced option traders.

I love the clear and concise way that the author presents the 40 strategies, clearly defining things such as who the strategy is suitable for, the risks, the rewards, when it is appropriate, and how to execute. Each point is clearly delineated in it's in easy to find block. "The Options Playbook" has proven to be a handle reference tool and has helped me to find profitable opportunities has I have began to trade options. This book is probably best suited to the new and intermediate trader. Fantastic account of the Trobriand Islands. It's eye opening how women were so painfully overlooked by earlier ethnographers. Women and men work together all around the world, and hold just as much value, economically and socially. I highly recommend.

I read this book shortly after it was published. The - female - ethnographer who conducted the research got a very very different picture of how Trobriand society was organized than did Malinowski, who had preceded her by a number of years. He had asked men what the women of their community did, he did not approach the women or observe their activities for himself. As it turns out, women actually conduct the business of the community; they have their own private language, and their view of men is that the men just sit around and gossip all day, doing no real work unless called on to battle other communities.

I'm a longtime Keillor fan and he holds the top spot when it comes to the most carefully crafted stories ever written. "The Road Home" is another collection of his experiences transferred onto the little town of Woebegone with the new twist: He is now 75 years old and his topics deal more with retrospective assessments of birth, life, and death so the general feel of his delivery is not as lighthearted or optimistic. He still has his wonderful, mellow voice, and the recordings now pick up his breathing AND a little whistle that puts me in mind of dentures that perhaps need to be refitted. the first few cuts I listened to, I was feeling disappointed because he just sounded more like an old man, rambling about whatever was drifting thru his head at the time, but then he got back to his more recognizable style of actual story-telling. There was a clear beginning, middle and end, to each one, and I'm pleased to report, the END always carried the big payoff of a classic wrap to the originally introduced topic. He is still Number one in my book, and I will continue to purchase whatever he puts out on CD. I still go back to his absolute GOLD albums that contain the stories like "Bruno, the Fishing Dog", "My Aunt Ellie", "The TRUCK STOP"...well, you know if you are a fan exactly what I'm talking about.

Love this CD. Every story is a gem.First Paul Harvey dies. Then car talk goes. Then Letterman retires. Now Garrison leaves PHC.What is a guy supposed to do?

If you like the Lake Woebegone stories then you will like this compilation. Only issue with it was there was one track that apparently didn't get copied to the CD correctly. But I think there is like 36 stories on this set so having one that I couldn't listen to completely was not that big of an issue. I'm sure I could have tried returning and gotten a replacement but didn't try that.

A great edition to my collection. Keillor and Lake Wobegon stories are not only entertaining but full of down home common sense that many of us can identify.

As always, Garrison Keillor shows why he is a master storyteller. Be aware of one thing, however--in my set, disc 1 is labelled "Disc 3", and vice-versa. It may be limited to just one pressing. But once you figure that out, it doesn't detract in the least from the stories. UPDATE: When I contacted Highbridge Audio directly about the mislabeled discs, they quickly and cheerfully offered to replace them. A class act!

Love to listen to these folksy stories while I exercise after 2 hip surgeries.... It helps make the time pass quickly and I am fully entertained doing something I consider a drudge. Thumbs up.

A far as I'm concerned, Garrison is America's most beloved and talented storyteller.

Whats to say, you can't go wrong with Garrison Keillor. I loaded it up to a USB drive and carry it in the car on trips. Makes the miles go by pleasantly.

I enjoyed reading about so many aspects of the lead-up to America's involvement in WW1 that I never learned in high school history class. Having well-developed characters who are forced to change because of the events around them made for a compelling read. The only drawback to my complete enjoyment was numerous instances of missing punctuation.

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍. One of the greatest Novels I’ve ever read. I bought 4 paperbacks and wrapped them for Christmas presents for my friends in my reading club. one.

A vivid retelling of the sinking of the Lusitania, riveting and well researched. The author pulled every thread making up the tragedy and wove a suspense-filled story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters and personality types of the early 20th century are true to history and as the Lusitania sailed toward tragedy, I couldn’t put it down.Curtis Carlson is on the Lusitania in order to bring loan papers to the UK to help them in the war effort. The US has yet to enter the World War I theater, but the allies need their help. He meets the lovely Josette and her twin Yvette and their family moving to the UK, the charming Mrs. Donaldson and her dog Mr. Duns. There are spies aboard and munitions, but there are innocent civilians, and it’s heartbreaking to read how the Lusitania was carrying so many children with their families. However dark the story is, how realistic, there are some rays of light at the end of the journey.

The author's extensive research for IN THE SHADOW OF WAR is evident in every chapter. Historical places in New York City, in Ireland, and the Lusitania itself are described in beautifully written, vivid detail. I wondered how the author knew the inside and outside of the doomed ocean liner so well. In her Author's Notes at the end, the author writes that she was given access to an enormous model of the Lusitania, featuring a cutaway portion to view the inside of the ship, at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA.The storyline is complex, eventful, and well-paced with colorful, multi-faceted characters, some famous and drawn from history. Josette Rogers and Curtis Carlson, the novel's charming young protagonists, meet in NYC under chaotic circumstances. Events having to do with the terrible war in Europe require them both, for separate reasons, to reluctantly board the Lusitania to travel to England. A shipboard romance ensues, but when a German torpedo hits the Lusitania the couple is torn apart. The author's description of the dreadful chaos aboard the fast-sinking ship is riveting and heartbreaking. Reading the passages where Curtis views all the dead bodies brought ashore in Ireland, looking for Josette, made me weep. Nevertheless, despite the trauma and the demise of important characters, the novel ends on a positive note. I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it.

In the Shadow of War by Colleen Adair Fliedner is a book that has many good elements such as an exciting spy subplot, well- drawn characters, both fictional and nonfictional, a compelling love story, and a tightly constructed main plot that explores what was happening in America and the world before, during, and after the sinking of the Lusitania. I could write about any of these integral parts of the book, but what I keep coming back to is the development of the heroine of the story, Josette Rogers, as the main reason I am drawn to this historical fiction. At the beginning of this story, Josette is a charming, intelligent, young woman in her early twenties who often lives in her head rather than her heart. She eschews her sister Yvette’s more romantic, emotional view of life, not herself being a fan of sentimentality, although there is some evidence that Josette is capable of great compassion in her sympathy for a German household employee’s horrible treatment by certain Americans and her fear for the young strangers she meets who are going off to war. She argues well at a college meeting regarding whether or not Americans should stay out of the war going on in Europe, but she has no personal experience of the violence and tragedy of war, just her quotes and esoteric thoughts based on logic only. Then she becomes a passenger on the Lusitania, and all that she thought she knew about the world through her book reading and her reticence to be susceptible to strong emotions is challenged by her personal experiences and new perceptions. How she changes from this voyage on the Lusitania is, in my opinion, the crux of this story. I consider her a true heroine, and her personal experience of the Lusitania tragedy adds so much to what is already a well-written book. Highly recommend!

From all of my high-school and college history classes, I knew about the sinking of the Lusitania, but when I read In the Shadow of War, I learned the story behind the story. I had no idea there were German spies in the U. S. and was unaware of all the political intrigue that went on behind the scenes regarding the beginnings of the U..S.'s involvement in World War I. Colleen Fliedner has done a masterful job at exposing all these details and the truth behind the sinking of the Lusitania. This is a must-read!

Meticulously researched making you feel like you're there. Strong emotional characters to take you through the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. A must for those who love history.

Poor plots, very good drawings.

This was a surprise to see a second volume of Dan Barry's beautiful Flash Gordon strips so soon (six months) after the first volume arrived. This volume is in the same format as volume One. The suggested retail on this volume has gone up $10 but you do get an additional sixty pages of strips. The strips are in a three to a page format, with sharp crystal clear reproduction on superior paper. Rick Norwood, long time publisher of the seminal comic strip magazine Comics Revue provides an excellent introduction. You get a whopping 12 story-lines this time. Granted the stories did seem to decrease in size after the first one collected here. The strips start on October 26th 1953 and run to June 9th 1956. so well over two and a half years worth. While the art is just as beautiful as last volume, the writing is not as good this time. Last volume the great Harvey Kurtzman wrote about half of them before Dan Barry took over the reigns again for some also pretty good sagas. This time Barry seems to be trying out a few other comic book writers before once more taking back the writing, The success of these are mixed. I liked the first story a lot, but the next several are not as good then it picks up for a pretty strong run for the second half of the book. The Cast as we start is Flash and Dale his spunky girlfriend Dale plus Professor Zarkov. The Space Kids from the tail end of the previous volume make a return In several stories and we get a new female cast member, Plus at the start of 1956 they all go to Mongo to reconnect with all those characters.THE LOST CONTINENT is the longest story of the collection lasting Five Months. After it ended they all ran about 2 to 3 months. Our trio of heroes find themselves in submersible and locate the lost civilization of Atlantis. Lots of political intrigue and a cast of fully developed characters make this a fun story. It is written by Sid Jacobson of Harvey Comics fame. Much of the art seems to be the work of Paul Norris. Norris was the co-creator of Aquaman and had a decades long run on the sadly ignored Brick Bradford Comic Strip. Dan Barry's brother Sy Barry also did some art for this volume. Probably mostly inking. Sy would go on to a long run on The Phantom.CIRCEA is the first of four stories written by longtime D.C. Comics scribe Robert Kanigher. These are all pretty wonky strorytelling.THE DEADLY TOUCH even seems like it could have run in Strange Adventures. Flash gains so much strength in his hands that everything he touches crumbles. In PERIL PARK a young woman in the future is being menaced by Sharks and Alligators at the same time so she puts a note into a bottle and Flash finds it in the past and travels to the future to rescue her. WHAT ??? Her name is Elda and she also has the Hots for Flash. She is a spitting image of Dale and her name is just Dale scrambled up.THE MARTIAN BABY is equally strange. Dale & Flash find a newborn infant in Flying Saucer. We are told Dale can not lift the baby because it weights three the weight of an Earth Baby. Since a 1950's Earth Baby might weight 7lbs that would mean 21 lbs. Who could lift that much? Even stranger Flash knows immediately that since the baby weights three times too much is must be from Mars where they have three times as much Gravity. So off they go to Mars.THE TRAIL OF THE VULKE is a sequel to the final story in the first volume. The Space Kids and Flash revisit a planet they went to previously. This is the return to Dan Barry written storiesTYMPANI is a rather weak story about Space Music.STARLING is a very sexist story about a beautiful but strong willed woman who thinks she is as good as a man. She is physically spanked and in the end submits to the male. Feminists be warned. The Introduction says it is an Outer Space version of the musical "Annie Get Your Gun"In SPACE CIRCUS Flash is picked up by a Superior Race who uses other races for entertainment. We are told their captors are Telepathic but we find out the are only talking through their ears. Flash and his allies learn this skill by covering their mouths and noses while talking. I actuallt tried this at home and sadly never learned to Talk out of my Ears.SWAMP GIRL was my favorite because we learn Zarkov has a wife that is dying. He also has a Hot Daughter named Zara who was raised in a Swamp Jungle. Zara is a new cast member (at least for now).the Last two stories RETURN TO MONGO and KAG THE CONQUEROR are a big change of pace as the strip returns ti it's origins. Flash, Dale, Zarkov, Zara and the Space Kids all return to Mongo. When Dan Barry took over the strip almost 5 years earlier he had avoided all these setting and characters. Now they are all back including Price Barrin. Ming was previously killed off so we get a never revealed long lost som also named Ming. I am eager for a third volume to find out how long we stay on Mongo. My Highest Recommendation. ..

I agree almost completely with the previous reviewer, I would just like to say something in defense of some of the "weaker" stories here. Really, only the trio of Circea, The Deadly Touch, and Peril Park are near-irredeemable, because they have not just one, but many premises that make no sense. The Martian Baby, on the other hand, would work very well if you just replaced Mars by "a strange planet that has just wandered into our solar system," and took off from there. And the Tympani story, in my opinion, is really quite good. (There is, of course, the little matter of sound not being able to travel through space, but presumably those were just radio waves carrying the sound.) It was definitely worth the return engagement it got 13 years later, in "Egon Blant Escapes" (1/15/68).Dan Barry appears to have had some criterion whereby he would not sign an individual strip if he had not put a minimum amount of work on it himself. By that standard (whatever it was), there are a lot of strips here that are primarily the work of collaborators, and it would be nice if we could tell who they were. (The art is uniformly good, and Barry was obviously, at this stage, still involved enough with the strip to secure a consistent look throughout.) The main assistant is probably his brother Sy Barry, as mentioned in the introduction. On the other hand, an article linked from the Wikipedia page on Leonard Starr indicates that he worked on Flash Gordon dailies in the 1955-56 time frame, and "Swamp Girl" looks like his stuff (in fact, when I saw Zara's face on the last panel in that story, I thought "Stan Drake!", but I can't find confirmation of that anywhere--so I'll settle for Leonard Starr instead).Overall, a very good book. They gave us enough extra pages to make up for the weaker stories, and, as a longtime subscriber to "Comics Revue", I was very glad to see the introduction by Rick Norwood. I look forward to the next volume, where a more consistent continuity for the strip should start to develop.

I'm a grown (divorced) man and watched Pastor Andy Stanley's sermons based on this book, then I bought the book and read it. My intention was to see if it addressed the many mistakes my friends and I made, and to see it it was good enough to give to younger friends and family members.Having never received "the talk," I feel this short, easy-to-read book provides far more information in a clear, concise, no-nonsense format than any ten minute talk my father could have given me.The life principles Andy teaches are brilliant in their simplicity. The book has Christian overtones, but the information can be applied in anyone's life regardless of religious beliefs and age.I would highly recommend buying this book for your kids when they are junior high school age or more. Ideally, the children and parent(s) should both read it and discuss it. Some of the concepts require a little more maturity to understand, so the children should simply put the book on a shelf and read it (and discuss it) once a year until they understand the information. This book is also excellent for older single and divorced men and women, who have made some relationship mistakes, want a fresh start, and wish to avoid making as many relationship mistakes as possible.I highly recommend this book. It can change your life and save you or your children from making some fairly basic and completely avoidable relationship mistakes.

Buy this book. Read it. Single or not, you will be glad you did.Life has become increasingly complicated in the new millennium, in part, because American culture has thrown out “the rule book”. Some blame the pill; some blame the feminists; some blame the media. Whatever the reason, the irony is that the emotional and financial costs of broken relationships have never been higher. In his new book, The New Rules for Love, Sex, and Dating, Andy Stanley writes:“I’m not all that interested in why things are the way they are. I’m more interested in helping you navigate the way things are. My purpose in writing is to increase your relational satisfaction” (14).Fair enough. But then Stanley then goes on to offer a rather rare insight:“I’ve met with many struggling married couples who would describe themselves as having ‘marriage problems.’ But in all my years I’ve never talked to a married couple that actually had a marriage problem. What I have discovered is that people with problems get married and their problems collide. What was manageable as a single person eventually becomes unmanageable within the context of marriage” (20).Wow. This is getting down to brass tacks! Instead of looking for that perfect person to solve all your problems, Stanley says—hey, look in the mirror![1]Andy Stanley is a pastor who does not sound or write like a pastor. He describes himself as a communicator, author, and pastor and founder of North Point Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia. His book is written in 10 chapters, including:1. The Right Person Myth;2. Commitment is Overrated;3. Becoming the Right Person;4. So Becoming;5. Love Is;6. Gentleman’s Club;7. The Way Forward;8. The Talk;9. Designer Sex; and10. If I were You (7-8).These chapters are preceded by acknowledgments and an introduction. They are followed by conclusions, notes, and a small group discussion guide. A DVD video study is also available. This is a book filled with a lot of wisdom. For example, Stanley’s discussion of 1 Corinthians 13 in chapter 5 is priceless—he describes it as your list of suggestions on becoming the person that you would want to meet (76). One item on this list is patience: Love is patient (1 Cor 13:4). Stanley notes that impatience is an emotion, not a decision, and it does not come naturally. We all have a natural pace and get angry when others don’t go along. Stanley explains that love means deferring to someone else to set the pace—in time, space, and margin just as much as they need (79).The cliff notes version of Stanley’s advice is found in chapter 10 which he describes as the “hard sell”.Stanley knows his audience. He starts this chapter by repeating a challenge that he made earlier: “Beginning today, take a year off from all romantic and sexual pursuits” (170). This is the hard sell part. Psychiatrists tell us that addictions are forever—abstinence is the only prescription that truly works. Bad habits take two weeks to break—bad sexual habits fall somewhere in-between. While this might sound like a high price to pay for moral clarity, but the life you save may be your own[2].Stanley suggests that you spend this year proactively doing some important things to become the sort of person that the person you want to meet would find attractive. He has 5 suggestions:1. Address your past—face up to your issues;2. Break some bad habits (substance abuse, bad attitudes, poor fashion choices…);3. Set some standards—how far is too far?4. Get out of Debt—don’t expect to dump debt on a potential spouse; and5. Go (back) to church—hang out in the right place (172).Remember the mirror mentioned earlier? You cannot change someone else but you can work on becoming someone they might actually want to get to know. This is not a preachy book, but it is an in-your-face book. Although my wife, Maryam, and I have been married for 30 years, I was already 30 when I got married. This implies that I was single for a long time. Reading Stanley’s book back then would have saved me a lot of pain. Go for it. Read it. Take it seriously. Save yourself a lot of pain.[1] Stanley writes: “ever purchase something from a big box retailer and open the box to find a card that reads something along these lines? If this product is defective or a piece is missing, do not return to the place of purchase. Instead, contact us at 1-800-ITS-YOUR-FAULT.” (59)[2] The leading cause of suicide among young people is a broken relationship.

There are a couple of topics I absolutely HATE hearing sermons on. One is marriage (primarily because I'm single and intend to stay that way) and the other is money.I've heard many sermons on the topic of stewardship, and most of the time, I cringe inwardly the entire time. I've even read a few books on stewardship. I've found that most Christian pastors and authors approach stewardship in one of two ways.First, there is the Prosperity Gospel camp. These folks typically say that God wants all His children to be rich and that financial blessings are the primary way God blesses faithfulness. In my opinion, this teaching doesn't square with the whole of Scripture, especially the teachings of Jesus Himself. It reduces God to a genie. If you send in a large enough donation, pray the right prayer, or claim the right verse, then God has no choice but to bless you financially. If you are poor, it's your own fault because your faith is too weak and you aren't trusting God to provide. Proponents of the Prosperity Gospel also frequently twist Scripture and quote it out of context. On the opposite end of the spectrum are those who try to use guilt and intimidation in regards to stewardship. People of this persuation usally put a lot of emphasis on tithing (giving God the top 10%) and frequently quote Malachi 3:8. It is implied (and sometimes directly stated) that believers who don't tithe are robbing God. If you are bold enough to question, why you should tithe, you will probably not get a straight answer. You will probably just be told the Bible commands it and that's it. But in my opinion, it's not quite that simple. I believe that it is possible for someone to tithe regularly out of less than pure motives. It can lead to legalism. Just because a person tithes doesn't necessarily mean a person has a right attitude and heart towards money. There are many non-believers who are far more generous with their money than a lot of Christians. It's sad, but true. This book manages to avoid both of these pitfalls. Andy Stanley is definitely NOT a prosperity preacher. But he also doesn't restore to guilt-trips to motivate people to give. Instead, he focuses on an issue that is almost completely neglected when it comes to finances. Fear. Andy Stanley asserts (and I completely agree) that the main reason many (if not most) Christians don't give generously isn't pride or selfishness, but fear. In this current econonmy, many people are struggling to afford essentials like food, rent, and gas. They are just barely able to make ends meet as it is. It seems impossible and unfair to be expected to give when you can barely afford the true necessities. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know this is very true in my case. I often feel torn. I want to be generous and give, but I feel like I can't because I can't afford my own apartment, groceries, or a car, gas and insurance. I am living paycheck to paycheck, with very little left over. But rather than emphasizing the importance of the tithe, the basis for Andy Stanley's teaching is found in another portion of Scripture all together. It is found in 2nd Corinthians 9:7 (NIV) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. The Lord has definitely been stretching me in the area of giving and stewardship. He has been challenging me to step out of my comfort zone. He has also challenged me to change my attitude and thinking in regards to money and how I spend it. This is an area where I really struggle. But I know I am not alone. I think there are many Christians who struggle in the area of finances. But they are afraid to speak up.Guilt will only motivate people to give for so long. Eventually, they will get fed up and just say forget it. A person who truly wants to be generous must allow God to truly change their heart and attitude towars money. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen if they allow God to truly transform their heart and mind.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the subject to stewardship or to anyone who is fed up with the two extremes I mentioned above. I also recommend any of the other books by Andy Stanley. He writes in a way that is convicting and thought-provoking, yet practical and easy to understand.
