Wonderful calendar, great pics

Beautiful photos, but it's not holding together too well. Several pages have dropped out and the hole for hanging has torn.

Beautiful calendar!

Beautiful bird photography, great variety.

I was looking for a 16 month calendar that I could begin using now, before 2019. All other 16 month calendars I've purchased in the past had full page calendars for the extra 4 months. This is a total rip-off.

Beautiful color photos of birds, perfect for a bird lover. Plenty of space for daily entries & also displays small view prior & next month for easy reference. Have been using this calendar for a few years now.

Beautiful calendar of beautiful birds. I took it to my office & find it brightens the room.

I spent 2 years trying to follow a plan to reverse my diabetes... I passed this plan up 2 years ago becasue I thought it would be too hard.. but when my sugar went up 20 points, I got serious... Instead of injecting insulin, I followed Dr. Barnard's (and Colin Campbells) advise and it only took 3 months for my diabetes to be reversed... and.. it's not as hard as I thought!.. Today I am fully adjusted to this program and see so so so many more benefits too... i.e., my arthritis disappeared.. my skin (Im 66 years old) is glowing again.., my two toes numb for 5 years are back to normal... my cholesterol medication is now stopped because my cholesterol dropped 40+ points and I don't need it.. my eyebrows grew back.. and I feel like dancing all day long... no problem.. Im enjoying my good health and really enjoy eating my carbs again... welcome back oatmeal

I've been dieting since I was eight years old. In fact, I don't think I can even remember a time when I didn't struggle with my weight, and I'm 43 years old now. Last year, I reached my highest weight at 235 lbs. (I'm a woman and 5', 5”) and I began having some pains in my arm and was unusually short of breath after walking just a couple blocks. Scared, I went to the doctor, and after some tests, she recommended that I go to the emergency room immediately, as she suspected that I was experiencing a pulmonary embolism. The emergency room doctors laughed her off, saying I was too young, and not fat and/or sedentary enough to be experiencing this. I went in for a CT Scan, and as the night wore on, my emergency room doctor looked more and more concerned. It seemed I had two large blockages in my arteries, and he admitted me to the hospital for observation, where I was taught to give myself injections in the stomach until the pills I was placed on kicked in.I struggled for the next few months, trying to lose weight, and trying to fit in any amount of exercise during my twelve hour work days. I had read Dr. Barnard's book before (although I'm not diabetic), and although I often stuck to two out of three of the rules he laid out, I didn't stick to all three at once, and I couldn't quite trust that I could eat as much as I wanted and lose weight, so, still counting calories, I often slipped up and ate off plan.In late March of 2017, I woke up in the middle of the night, unable to breath. I didn't go to the emergency room (I should have, don't try this at home), but the next day I decided to go all in; I decided to forget about losing weight and eat purely for health. I followed all three guidelines Dr. Barnard recommends: The food must be vegan, with no added fat, and low GI, and I followed the rules religiously for 14 weeks. I didn't weigh myself at all; I was waiting for my next blood test, and I was worried that it was all a lie, that I wouldn't lose weight, couldn't lose it because it's not possible to eat all you want and lose weight. That's just a pipe dream, right?Wrong. I ate plenty of food, never went hungry, ate in the middle of the night if I wanted to, and I lost twelve pounds. Without exercise. Without hunger. Practically without trying. All I did was stick to the appropriate types of food. And I ate as much as I wanted, and not just sprouts and carrots, but real food, beans, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, barley, sweet potatoes. It's slow weight loss, but it's steady, and because I can eat as much as I want, and because the food I'm eating is actually nourishing my body, it's a very easy eating plan to stick to.In addition to the weight loss, my cholesterol dropped from 190 to 154.The first week was the hardest as I worked on meal plans, and I ate a ton because the feeling of eating without added fat was so foreign to me. It took me that full week to adjust, but after that, it became second nature. All my meals take less than 15 minute to prepare (they might take longer to cook, but prep is 15 minutes or less). There is a bit of a learning curve, and you do have to make sure you keep the right foods around, especially some quick-fix go-to's; this makes it easier to stay on plan. This is by far the easiest, most effective way of eating I've ever experienced, and I feel incredibly lucky to have picked up this book.

My A1C was a 10.1 according to the blood test results I had before beginning to follow Dr. Barnard's plan. Sixty days later my blood test results showed my A1C to be 5.6 PLUS I've lost 30 pounds while following this plan! My doctor and I are looking at medication reductions with the ultimate goal of no longer needing them. I am a firm believer in this program. I feel lightyears better and have no intentions of straying away from this lifestyle. I am living proof that Dr. Barnard's findings and plan works!

I loved this book, it features the latest research in diabetes and how to tackle it successfully. I've read some reviews and many complain it is too strict. This tells me some are having a hard time choosing between getting rid of diabetes and losing limbs, going blind, etc., just to enjoy a meal?If you are ready and wiling to change permanently, I highly recommend this book. If you are NOT ready to change your life forever, save your money.

2 year update: 91 lb weight loss (effortless still), A1C is 4.7, blood glucose at recent check-up was 85. Cholesterol at 118, HDL's at 82 and LDL's 59. BMI is 20.Oh and my age? It's prehistoric at 60+. Based on my blood work, the medical team classified me as a 20 something. Wow. I was so ignorant until I started this journey and my entire body changed as a result of following this regimen. Here's a radical thought. If my bloodwork says that I'm healthy, shouldn't insurance rate classes be based on data and not age discrimination? You know, a fair and equitable health insurance system based solely on, golly, health? Just sayin'.My doctor officially removed the type 2 diabetes diagnosis from my medical record. Do I miss anything? Yah, the prospect of blindness, kidney failure and limb loss if I didn't own my diagnosis and get serious. This is real medicine instead of profiteering to feed some big pharma fat cat who'd rather watch us die young as free lab rats than actually get well. No thank you & FTS.6 month update as a vegan: Weight loss = 63 lbs (effortless, btw), median blood glucose was 243 now 105, A1C was 10.3 and now it's 5.5. It's science, period. Reversed my diagnosis. Even the medical team can't believe it; they've read and recommend these books to their patients.Even if you're young and healthy, BUY THIS BOOK. As you age, it will save your life, literally. This book is based on SCIENCE, not pseudoscience. Want to live long & prosper? BUY THIS BOOK.Want to prevent or reverse type 2 diabetes, heart disease and virtually all (if not all) of the lifestyle diseases? BUY THIS BOOK.Want to lose weight, stay thin and feel the best that you've ever felt in your life? BUY THIS BOOK.Want to have a healthy body and a sharp mind without pharmaceuticals or a medical intervention, e.g.. Lipitor or a gastric bypass? BUY THIS BOOK.I see that the self-proclaimed, smarty pants 'experts' bash this diet as incomplete or containing too much soy. Seriously, you have access to the web or you wouldn't be on Amazon. Buy Dr. Barnard's nutrition guide for clinicians (used to be part of med school training) if you think that this vegan diet is somehow lacking and figure it out.Read this book more carefully. There are soy substitutes like TVP, white beans and other vegetable milks like rice or almond milks. Don't eat so much soy if you don't like it. Dr. Barnard provides a ton of protein alternatives in the form of other beans and grains. BTW, I never knew about soy yogurt. It's delicious and tastes just like milk-based yogurts.Lastly, this book doesn't pretend to be a vegan cookbook. It's only a start and lays out the plant based food pyramid, which is critical to understand how to eat plant-based and be nutritionally sound.Want more vegan variety? Search Amazon for some amazing vegan cookbooks. With all of the vegan possibilities (we love eastern Indian food), you're not going to miss a single animal protein in your diet. OK, we miss the incredible edible egg, but we prefer our health more. Then there are the negative reviews because this lifestyle change is, in many reviewers' estimations as 'too hard'. Hmmm... We're guessing that these people want someone to do it for them so that they don't have to do the work to save themselves.Bad news: only you can save yourself. You have a choice; spend the rest of your life with diseases that will make your world smaller and smaller as your health declines or transform your life with the wake-up call of your diagnosis.Time to say good-bye to all of the over-indulgence, every last molecule of it. You're right, no more cheese, meat, fish - every source of animal proteins and fats, processed foods, refined sugars and lack of exercise; it's killing you. There's no going back and no cheating if you want a disease free or more manageable life. Quick survey - who actually likes to live in pain? Show of hands...no one? Thought so.Dr. Barnard lays it out from the data of his clinical studies and others; you can either get well as a vegan or fail by following the current AHA and ADA guidelines that allow for animal proteins and fats. Your diseases mean that there is no longer any middle ground. It's cut & dried; the data reveal all.Wake up, stop whining, buck up & own it. But hey, it's your life...These easy to follow, tried & true, tasty meal and exercise plans reversed my type 2 diabetes and saved my life. There are so many great vegan cookbooks out there that we don't miss the non-vegan world. I also discovered that I had to educate the institutionalized medical diabetic 'industry' along the way because, as Dr. Barnard shows again and again in his clinical studies, it's either a vegan way of life with exercise or nothing if you want to improve your health permanently.Bottom line is that you are what you eat. My numbers do all the talking. Period.Thank you, Dr. Barnard!

Over four decades ago, when I was in my early twenties, I went through certain very intense experiences as a consequence of “an irruption of unconscious content into consciousness.” This experience made me intensely interested in the work of C. G. Jung. His work helped me understand and successfully live through, this experience. While it is common for scientists to dismiss Jung as superstitious, an accusation I do not completely disagree with, it is nonetheless true that people who have not experienced such an experience are not really qualified to criticize Jung. Though I have read a number of Jung’s books, I have read nothing by him in over thirty years, and I had never read this particular book. Jung apparently wrote this at about the time of his break with Freud, and he basically points out some of the reasons for this separation from Freud. This book, therefore, seems like a good starting point for anyone interested in learning more of Jung’s ideas. Although it would be better to read Freud’s “Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex” before reading Jung’s book, since Jung refers to it often and refutes some of its assertions.Freud’s central hypothesis in the formation of a neurosis is that some traumatic event occurred in childhood which hindered the natural expression of the libido. The libido is the sexual analog of hunger. This hypothesis rests upon the notion of infantile sexuality, a notion which was denied at that time. Freud’s investigations disclosed not only but even precocious infantile sexuality, which often provoked the traumatic events which seemed to be the source of neurosis. Of course, critics accused the psychoanalysts of seeing things that were not really there. However, these critics made no studies of there own. Jung argued that it was more probable to suppose that the instinct for the preservation of the race was present in childhood than that it hits full force at puberty. In the present day it seems incredible that thinking adults could ever have denied infantile sexuality. Jung, however, disagreed with certain of Freud’s conclusions regarding infantile sexuality. Freud, for instance, asserted that the infant sucking its mother’s breast was a sexual act; Jung thought the pleasure attained by suckling was merely that of nutrition. However, since many bad habits of childhood, picking the nose, biting fingernails, etc, are linked with infantile suckling, and these habits are linked to adolescent masturbation, Freud concluded that suckling itself was a sexual act.Jung did not believe that the traumatic event was the cause of the neurosis. When reading Freud, one gets the sense that every human endeavor boils down to sex. Civilization itself is dependent upon the shame and disgust that humans supposedly naturally feel towards sex causing a sublimation of the sexual drive into more productive channels. For Jung, libido is used in the more general sense of every passionate desire. However, he still maintains that morbid and exaggerated mental attitudes are a consequence of excessive libido; that is, the libido was somehow blocked in its proper flow so there is too little for some functions and too much for others. Psychoanalysis is the method by which the just proportions are restored.Homosexuality, in those days, was explained as just another sexual dysfunction resulting from this improper blockage of libido. It is not clear that either Freud or Jung absolutely denied the possibility of congenital homosexuality, but they surely believed that it could often be explained by the blocked libido hypothesis. Jung describes a young man who had experienced homosexual desire when even younger, seemed to outgrow it as he got older, but then returned to homosexuality when the woman he wanted to marry rejected him. Nowadays we would more likely explain this as the young man tried to deny his homosexual nature by fixating on a woman who was sure to reject him. When she did, he accepted his intrinsic homosexuality. However, it seems likely that homosexuality is not congenital in all cases. What most impressed me about Jung when I first read him forty hears ago was that for him the unconscious was not just a reservoir of repressed mental garbage, as Freud insisted, but was rather the actual source of consciousness. His studies of world mythologies and fairy tales demonstrated that all cultures independently derive the same themes. Moreover, these themes are repeated in dreams, as well as in the delusions of schizophrenia. Jung’s assertion that mankind’s unconscious is collective is widely ridiculed by “scientists,” though more from mere prejudicial rather than scientific reasons. There is no “scientific” reason for insisting that consciousness does not have intrinsic existence in some primordial form. Jung no doubt made mistakes, and often drifted often into regions that can almost certainly be dismissed as superstitious. However, he was a pioneer, exploring psychic regions where no scientist had gone before. Pioneers are permitted to make mistakes; that is a poor reason to dismiss their important discoveries.

After reading this and Sigmund Freuds general introduction of psychoanalysis I have gained a pretty good understanding of the first understandings of the unconscious. I found Jungs book much easier to read compared to the books I have read in school. He does a wonderful job keeping to point and using language easily understood by someone much less read in psychology. I also really enjoyed his examples of cases to illustrate is points. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is going to school for psychology or just simply has an interest.

Although the material, at times, seems quite dry, the overall analysis of this subject is detailed and great to read. As a novice to the world of psychology, Dr. Jung' s book has certainly clarified things in a very tactile way.The material, again, was dry, hard to follow at times, and, as always, could use an illustration at times, but for being free the book is top notch.

Jung was explaining why he broke with Freud. He was definitely blaming Freud, although respectfully. For those of us who find Freud unreasonably and unattractively focused on a single idea, one more literary than scientific, Jung helps explain the attraction of Freudian theory and the excitement it created.

Jung's work is seminal to the field of psychodynamic theory and practice. Reading Jung in the original can be laborious at times, but can only enhance and deepen understanding of a number of theorists that followed him.

Jung's early work, 1915, is fundamentally clear and interestingly written. It is a valuable foundation of his initial theory and practice, which he modified by further research in latter decades. It contains the important aspects of psychoanalysis in an easily understandable presentation. This book surpasses works of many modern authors on the subject today. PB.

Great Reference Book.

Like all his books. Need a dictionary sometimes. 😉

Tracie once again with all three books in this series hit a home run for me! Sharing God's Word and seeing the main Characters grow stronger in His Word and faith ,love caring for each other had them coming through each circumstance coming closer to living an amazing life fill with love as God would have them! Calrb, Camariann, Judith, Micah, Kenzie and Patrick all ended in marriages that God could have only blessed! Dr. Micah Fisher, Attorney Caleb Coulter, and Patrick Murddock Construction Company owner, fought through trails before they all saw 1906 San Francisco's city( the worst was Earthquake& Fire) relax a bit! Thanks for the love of God you share in your Stories!! Forgive misspellings please know from my heart how much I truly enjoy your stories! They make me feel I'm a part and sometimes like I'm there.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It has a strong storyline and strong characters who had great faith, tenacity, love and a willingness to give of themselves to help others. This story about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake has meaning to me because my grandparents were there when it happened. My dad was born in San Francisco in July 1907. So my grandfather told my dad about it. My grandfather was fishing in the San Francisco Bay in his boat when the earthquake occurred. I'm thankful my grandparents and family survived.

Love these characters and the time period. Meet the characters that helped build San Francisco after the earthquakes and fire. It was a horrible time in history, but one that Tracie Peterson wonderfully wove into her stories. I highly recommend any of her books. She's one of my favorite Christian Authors.

Just loved this series! I enjoy your books so much . I couldn't stop reading the book! I had to find out what happened next. Thank you for your emphasis on God in all your books! Looking forward to reading your next book in your Heart of Alaska series in January!

Well o

I was riveted to this book and was excited to pick it back up each day. History is a fascination for me so reading of the background of the earthquake in California was very interesting.

The experience base underlying my comments are as a recovering attorney who has served as a practice development consultant to law firms around the United States. These comments are primarily directed to those who are invested in, depending on your point of view, the legal industry or profession.First the good news. Before reading Susskind's work, you'll need three packs of sticky notes in different colors. Use one color to mark the things that you already agree with, another for the things you disagree with and the third - the big pack - for the new ideas you hadn't considered before. Since tradition is only helpful to the extent the future will be like the past, it is not so much in his specific predictions that Susskind's work benefits the legal community as much as the fact that he makes the velocity of change undeniable. The metaphorical image of lawyers Susskind paints is a bunch of guys in `bespoke' suites, standing on a beach toward which a huge wave is approaching, arguing with each other who will bear legal liability for the tsunami. Those who value the profession and their role in it will heed the warning and move to the high ground. These will be those who recognize that the legal profession is the servant of society - not the repository of its order or wisdom. In `minding the gap' between consultant speak and difference between theory and practice, the footnotes alone - most of which are web sites exemplifying what he's discussing, are worth the price of the book. The author would have earned more money from this work if he had simply asked the readers to send him a dollar every time they looked followed up on a footnote and said to themselves `now I see what he's talking about'.The bad news is that the author's experience clearly focuses this book on the net sum of his professional experience, which, apparently, is serving the largest `white shoe' firms in Great Britain. Since, using economic terminology, the law is a `lagging phenomena' - this exacerbates the differences in `legal culture' between us. The significance of this is inversely proportional to the `listening skills' of the reader. To the extent that most lawyers spend the time they're not talking thinking up what they're going to say next - this is a problem.Overall, the book gets a thumbs up. The author does American lawyers the favor of not only saying that changes are coming but outlines some specifics as to what those changes might be. Getting to higher ground in time is up to each individual and firm.

Please note the question mark in the title.Susskind, a British information-technology consultant and futurist, is not necessarily predicting the end of the legal profession in this thought-provoking but overly long and convoluted book. He is predicting that within a couple of decades, lawyering will have changed in ways that the typical law firm partner of 2009 can hardly envision. The engine of change, as far as Susskind is concerned, is the Internet and information technology in general. Susskind points to 10 "disruptive technologies" - among them ideas as prosaic as automated document assembly and as visionary as the provision of legal advice through open-source technology - that will alter the face of the profession."Information technology is now part of the universe of lawyers," Susskind writes. "It is not a parallel universe. Disruptive legal technologies are too important to be left to technologists ... they are applications of technology that challenge the old ways and, in so doing, bring great cost savings and new imaginative ways of managing risk."Susskind believes, for example, that except for the most customized, top-of-the-line engagements, legal work done by top firms in the United States and the United Kingdom will soon be largely standardized through the use of intelligent document assembly programs, the deployment of more paralegals and nonlawyers, and other innovations. Even high-end corporate work, he says, can benefit from standardization. The result will be lower costs to clients, a broader availability of legal services to the public, and possibly the end of the big law firm as we know it today.Susskind is quite aware of the cutting edge of legal marketing. One of his "disruptive" techniques is "the electronic legal marketplace," which he sees as including online ratings of individual lawyers, online auctions, bulk purchasing, and readily available price comparisons. He foresees the multi-sourcing of legal services, increased confidence by clients that they are getting the best value for their money, greater choice, and of course lower costs. The book can be slow going (Susskind has not learned how to write in short paragraphs), it can be repetitious, and Susskind's examples are taken almost entirely from British life, law, and experience and will be quite foreign to the American reader. For example, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, a government agency that Susskind regards as a key player in the legal Internet, sounds merely quaint to American ears.Regardless, anyone who wishes to understand where the profession has been and where it is going should read this book.

I'm a lawyer and bought this book when one of my clients told me she was reading it as part of her book club--which is comprised of high-level executives. Indeed, the very title had me worried! That aside, I found this book extremely insightful and quite helpful to me as a legal practitioner. It explores ways in which we can use technology to enhance efficiency in obtaining or rendering legal advice. While many lawyers might cringe at the possibility of being replaced by an algorithm, those of us who truly value their clients' interests and are sensitive to cost effectiveness can adapt many of the concepts presented in this book in improving their own customer service. This is a "must read" for lawyers and clients alike.

Provocative and inteligent in a general view. Unfortunatelly, the author forget the civil law universe and, thus, his conclusions don't apply entirely to "lawyers" at all, but to a specific system of justice with proper features.

GREAT book!

The book is a bit dated and discusses developments already here as if they were never thought of yet.

Great book for anyone considering law, or doing a law degree

One of the best reads of my life. Jung is every bit the legend that he is purported to be. Downside: Lost my ability to engage in basic human interactions like buying groceries without pausing to dredge up sustenance for my foul soul-replacement by staring insanely into cashier's eyes.

With open-minded vigor Jung explores the three primary archetypes of the collective unconscious: the Mother, the Father and the Child. He highlights their various qualities and how they integrate into the Self as expressed through various patient Mandala drawings. He underscores the fact that projections of the Self are evident in all sorts of human paintings through history from all cultures as evidence of a collective consciousness (a shared time and space of psyche understood consciously through symbols) and that the Mandala is a magically protective, integrative, and symbolic solution to the chaos of the ever developing order of the Self as it becomes a whole and balanced individual in the Chaos of the mysterious “thing in itself” we call objective reality.

I chose 4 stars because I could use a bit more translation of the French and Latin that appear in the book. Context clues reveal some extra layers but in the end it's a good read.I spent a great deal of time recording my dreams and fantasies just for fun and the first thing I ever painted as an adult was a Mandalay without realising it. If you are like me this book will blow you away. It's not an easy read but it does flow. Can't wait to start Aion!

This book is a collection of Jung's articles dealing with the archetypes of the collective unconscious. In it, Jung expands the definition Freud used of the unconscious, which Jung refers to as the personal unconscious, which is simply the collection of all things forgotten. The collective unconscious is trans-personal and common to all members of our species. It contains primary ideas or symbols that guide the development of people, formed though millennia of human behaviors becoming in part encoded in our genetic make up, much like instinctual behavior in animals. Personally, I feel that if a bird can spontaneously remember how to build a nest, I do not see it difficult at all for a human to recognize a mother or perhaps remember how to spiritually cultivate his/her self. However, there is no one direct expression of any one archetype as they are colored by the experiences of the individual consciousness. Life experiences that seem to take on a larger than life significance often are those that pair up with the archetypes. Such archetypes are the way we relate to our parents, to our spouses and even how we transform spiritually. It is crucial that these archetypes are allowed to express themselves spontaneously in the individual, for if they solidify, they cease to interact with the world and their energy begins to stagnate in the unconscious where it will eventually erupt. Much of religion then, according to Jung, is a means to express the archetypal energy of the individual in a healthy and productive fashion. It is important to note that the rational process, which distances the individual from the act or thought primarily squelches the spontaneity of this energy, which is subjective and often synchronistic. The consequence of not expressing this energy is impulsive thoughts and behavior that makes up the shadow, or the collection of all neglected energetic impulses. This book is an explanation of some of the more regularly encountered archetypes. The first archetype Jung deals with is the mother, which symbolically represents fertility on many levels, from a plowed field to the alma mater of academic institutions to Kundalini shakti or the primordial generative energy of prakriti or matter. The mother is also represented as the terrible mother as found in the Hindu goddess Kali. Jung goes on to write about the various neuroses that may result when a child identifies their own shadow with their biological mother. It its worse case, this can lead to "Don Juan-ism" in men and hyper-femininity in women. At its best, it leads to compassion and sensitivity in men and a healthy awareness of oneself as mother in women.Rebirth is another primary archetype whose expressions can be found anywhere from religious beliefs in the afterlife to the journey of the hero in mythology. Jung mentions spiritual cultivation is the process of uncovering this transformative archetype, which is expressed well in Christian mysticism and Hindu Yoga (presumably the Yoga Sutras). Jung gives many examples of dreams in which an individual is confronting their own unconscious so that they can grow beyond their current limited mental state. He also gives the detailed story of a female painter who transferred her religious development into mandala paintings. Jung carefully explains how the patient is dealing with her archetypes by how they are expressed in each of the paintings. Other archetypes covered are the child (new-ness, potential for change, virgin birth, continuation), Persephone (mother-daughter relationship), various quests of fairytales and the trickster figure (the success of non-thinking).In brief, this book presents plentiful examples in which Jung demonstrates how seemingly universal concepts manifest in patients' psyches. By doing so, Jung gives the reader ample evidence to support his method and theory.

Came in a week later than it should. But nonetheless I wouldn’t recommend this book for anyone who isn’t familiar with psychological and philosophical concepts. It can sound like gibberish to those unfamiliar with previous works from individuals like Freud etc..But to all those who read philosophical and psychological texts. I would say this is a must have.

The knowledge is golden but the reason for taking a star off was the print in the book is either faded or messed up over pleased with the purchase.

Jung is one of my favorite thinker and analyst It is wonderful to be able to have his complete work available in such a nice edition. The organization of the contents aloud me to choose very well which volume to get from the total of them

I am reading dr Jordan Peterson who quotes jung. I wanted a better understanding of jung’s writings. The book is exactly what I needed.

Before reading "The Year The Gypsies Came" by Linzi Glass I read all the glowing reviews with a skeptic's eye. Now that I have just completed this book let me rush to join the chorus who sing its praises. This intimate family story envelops the reader not only in the personal, but also in the larger story of Apartheid in South Africa. The novel becomes increasingly engaging as it unfolds. Especially compelling is the relationship between the young narrator, Emily, and the elderly Zulu night watchman with his wondrous tales filled with poetic wisdom. The impressive narrative is tightly woven and moves inexorably forward. Every word, phrase and sentence is there for a reason. How refreshing and unusual it is to find a book that is neither too long, nor hopelessly marred by excessive details.Linzi Glass' remarkable achievement is that through her lyrical prose she presents simultaneously the astonishing beauty of her native South Africa along with its correspondent sadness. Some of my best friends are my books. I often go back to a select few and reread passages that I have found to be particularly memorable. Surely "The Year The Gypsies Came" will join my group of special friends.

Set in South Africa in the early 1960's the story is about a dysfunctional family who play host to a family of displaced wanders. Beautifully written, the tale enfolds a rich carpet of characters and events that have a far-reaching affect on all involved.I was captivated with this book.

The Iris family lives in Johannesburg, Africa. Where you can "fall asleep with the faint roar of a lion or the laugh of a hyena coming across the lake." Their story takes place in the Spring of 1966 and is described through the eyes of the youngest member, twelve-year-old Emily. Other members of the family include mother Lily, father Bob and older sister Sarah.Emily has short dark hair and is a tomboy. She thinks dolls are boring and hates the colour pink. Her only friend in school is Cynthia Wright but her most important relationship is the one she has with her sister. She and Sarah are always compassionate to one another even with something as simple as a game of checkers.Bob comes home to let them know he ran into some 'gypsies' on one of his walks and they accepted his offer to park their trailer at the end of their estate. The Gypsies are made up of Jock and Peg Mallory and their two sons Streak and Otis. They aren't real gypsies but have travelled the continent in their trailer since before the boys were born. Jock supports his family as a wild life photographer. The boys immediately take a liking to the Iris girls spending any time they can with them outside of the girls' school.Another important character is sweet Buza, the night watchman/gate keeper. He is an elderly Zulu man and story teller who walks with a cane and tells stories to Emily when she comes to visit him in the watch house. He is her confidant and surrogate parent. Through him Linzi Glass laces short African tales which offer their own little morals within a few pages. One of my favourite was the story of Ma-We and the honey guide. Others include the phython story, the wolf story, the story of Rolihlahla and the story of two sisters, Yaphansi and Intombi. I would love to read more about Buza and his history. As the weeks pass Emily becomes stricken by the stories Streak shares with her about his family. Her own family doesn't look so bad after all. A growing fear murmurs inside her whenever she's around Jock. It isn't until one fearful night she realizes her fear was misdirected. But by then it's too late and her and Sarah's lives are changed forever. The use of simile is overbearing at times and some of the content is a little more mature than I would like for young adult readers. At the end is a helpful glossary of Afrikaans / Zulu words and Expressions. The Year of the Gypsies Came is Linzi Glass' first novel and she has created a compelling story with interesting characters. I couldn't help but care about them and I could literally feel the tension the author creates for Emily and Sarah when their parents argue. It's painful. The love Emily feels for Sarah and Buza is palpable. I was touched by their relationships. This book is worth reading for its sentiment and hint of African culture. Reviewed by M. E. Wood

Another book that I wanted to read after my high school librarian booktalked it.Set in South Africa during Apartheid, Emily's family is falling apart. Mother and Father rarely speak, and when they do it is just to argue. Mother is upset that Father isn't keeping her in the lifestyle that she imagined for herself, and Father is tired of Mother's browbeating. The only time that her parents seem to stop arguing is when other people stay at their compound. This time it's the gyspies. Not gypsies like one would imagine, her Father assures Emily. This is a wandering family from Australia. Jock, the nature photographer, wife Peg (with her omnipresent snake Opalina around her neck), and sons Otis and Streak. It's plain to see that Otis is simply not right in the head, and Streak is a bit of a wild one himself. Emily immediately takes to Streak, and sister Sarah is so kind and gentle that Otis' ways do not seem to bother her.The family's night watchman, Buza, has a bad feeling about these visitors. Emily spends her evenings with Buza, listening to his Zulu stories. He is the only person who can make Emily feel whole as her family splinters apart.***************This is a beautifully written tragedy. Emily is young enough that her emotions are raw and on the surface and Linzi Glass writes her voice perfectly. In fact there are no weak characters in this story. Each is integral, and everyone grows in some way.I have a bit of an interest in South Africa as a friend of mine lived there for several years, and I have recently aquired a South African penpal. However, I think that this is a book that will appeal to most fans of the written word. It is not for younger YAs as themes of infidelity, sexual abuse, and death are present. It is, however, wonderfully written and a pleasure (despite the pain) to read.
