The book has a wealth of information and I regularly return to it to read sections as I need help.Agreed, it is a bit choppy in places. Reading sections again after a gap of one or more years, details that seemed insignificant originally become much more important. Czajkowski wrote this after many decades of coaching.A fencing masters course is usually three years of full time study. If you can't spare 3 years, get this book and Laslo Szabo's Fencing and the Master to start your collection.

Confusing as hell, but worth it

If you're looking for another book on how to improve your technical skills in the sport of fencing, this is not the book for you. While disjointed at times (I believe because the book is actually made up of a number of essays that Professor Czajkowski has previously published, along with some new -- at least to me -- material) the book lays solid foundation for the discussion of fencing at a higher level than pure mechanics. This book is written under the assumption that the reader knows at least the basics of motor learning, and so, at times, the book can be impenetrable. Some aspects of the theory of pedagogical training could have been fleshed out more in the text, both to clarify points, and to help the reader along. But the Professor does not suffer fools lightly, and so the challenge is on the reader to do the extra work to fill in the background. As a fencing coach, I read this book every year, and every year, my previous years experience coaching and fencing brings me to new understanding of what this book is about. If you're a real student of fencing, and most especially, a coach of fencers, this book, along with one or two others (Such as "Fencing and the Master" by Szabo) has to be on your reading shelf.

This is a very in-depth look into fencing terminology, actions, and the teaching/coaching of fencing. It is not a light, easy read. I read the book during a week+ coaching clinic with Professor Czajkowski, and I've gone back to it over and over again as I've developed my own program, fencers, and assistant coaches. Absorbing the simple concepts he spells out and expounds on have had profound effects on my teaching and coaching abilities. Some of the highlights for me were:"Motivation and Arousal in Fencing" - understanding the importance of emotional equilibrium in fencing, and helping the fencer become aware of it, and how to maintain it"Types of Fencers: Warriors and Technicians" - understanding the personality types of fencers, and how to use the fencer's personality to help him develop and achieveThe book discusses some of the science of physical education - helping the fencing coach look beyond the bladework and footwork and see what is going on underneath the hood (so to speak) with the fencer - how does the fencer formulate his mental and physical reactions? How can the coach enhance/develop/focus those reactions and decision trees? In addition to higher-level physical education material is the nitty-gritty of the individual lesson (3 whole chapters just to that) and developing the training plan for one's athletes. This is not a light "learn how to teach fencing" manual, but is a necessary read for anyone that wants to get beyond light, recreational teaching of fencing and become a serious professional.

So, you find yourself aboard the sport of fencing. You wonder where you are and ache for directions. Eventually, you find yourself hauled into a seat, this book in your hands. "An excellent book", you have been told. "You might want to give your coach a copy to read."Only before you are about to leave the club for good. The book throws phrases like the follwing at you: "Counter-disengagement is an indirect thrust that ends in the same line. It is executed on the opponent's change of engagement or any circular movement (for example, a circular parry) and it ends in the same line from which it began, but constitutes an indirect thrust because it must first avoid the opponent's circular movement."Everything clear? How about this: "In order not to lose an active and offensive style of fencing, in which the fencer maintains control of the initiative and often uses offensive actions, the technique of defence - parries and counter-attacks - must be perfectly mastered in order to be certain of being effective at any moment in the bout."This fencing book is, of course, only the third worst in the universe. That's why it gets two stars. The second worst is that of the Beckncallians of Tauberbischofsheim. During a recitation by their fencing master Emmill the Flatulent of his essay "Developing a chosen technical-tactical ability by means of various actions (one capability - various actions)", four of his audience died of internal hemorrhaging and the president of the Mid-Galactic fencing Arts Council survived only by gnawing one of his own legs off. Emmill was reported to have been "disappointed" by the essay's reception, and was about to embark on a reading of his 12-book epic entitled "My Two Favourite and Only Fencing Actions" when his own large intestine - in a desperate attempt to save life itself - leapt straight up through his neck and throttled his brain. The very worst fencing book of all perished along with its creator, Nick Evangelista of Springfield, Missouri, in the destruction of the planet Earth. Or so we'd deserve. This book is mild by comparison.
