Instead of calling this a review, this should be classified as a fangirling episode. The gist of the following is: READ THIS BOOK. BUY IT. STEAL IT FROM SOMEONE. WHATEVER IT TAKES.As soon as I finished My Ex From Hell, I immediately picked up Ms. Darling's first novel, Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls so I wouldn't start going through withdrawals of humor. Let me tell you, this is an author to watch! Tellulah spins mythology brilliantly and makes My Ex From Hell the funniest retelling I've ever read!Sophie thought she was your average human, living an average life. She's trying to destroy her mortal enemy. Until kissing an complete jerk, albeit an extremely attractive, complete jerk, she thought she was mortal as well. Then she began to regain her memories. Not only was she the goddess, Persephone, but she was in a relationship with Kai, said extremely attractive jerk whom she kissed. Now to figure out how exactly this happened to her, she must unlock her past, with the help of her jerky ex and two best friends, to figure out exactly who and why someone was trying to murder her former self. This book was hilarious! Sophie has to be one of my favorite main characters of all time. She has a fantastic humor that kept me reading from start to finish. Her personality is relatable and her inner monologue left me in stitches. Her best friends, Hannah and Theo, only add to this story. The trio is an absolute riot, but they also obviously care for one another, which is always a plus in friendships. And Kai's hot. A total skeez, but hot. Like so hot that I drooled a bit every time he was mentioned. That hot. He's also a bit of a d-bag. Though, instead of making him less attractive, I found myself rooting for him and Sophie even more. From the moment Tellulah begins this story, I was enraptured. It was impossible to put the book down. I actually read it in one sitting, though I only meant to read a few chapters to help me fall asleep. (Stupid Tellulah and her engaging story.) The plot is filled to the brim with hilarity and adventure. It will continuously keep its readers on their toes. It's original and witty, a complete and total win. There is only one thing I didn't like about My Ex From Hell and that was the fact that it ended! It was such a good story that I was genuinely disappointed that the sequel is nowhere near being released. No, now I, and all of the other fans, have to wait until October to read the next installment. (Stupid calendar system.) I sincerely am looking forward to the second book. I'm sure that it will be just as fantastic as the first. Though... for the sake of my heart, I can only hope that Tellulah will give Kai and Sophie a break! (Because they belong together like peanut butter and jelly.)
This book was beyond what I expected it was funny and had a good story. Everyone loves a strong leading woman. Buuuut where I think the author made an error was that Sophie was strong out spoken female didn’t allow bullying but when it came to Kai she was just the opposite. She came off desperate at times. Like it had me face palming for her like girl really? You’re this bad ass chick and her comes douche bag god and you’re all mushy and he’s in a way putting you down. I really hope in the next installment she’s stronger against him emotion wise. Other than that this story was great. I love the story line and characters! Must read. Now off to read book two
Finally! At last! My Ex From Hell is now available! Ever since I read and frickin' enjoyed Tellulah Darling's Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls (review), I've been waiting for this baby as if it's my own. There was an excerpt of the first chapter of My Ex From Hell in Sam Cruz and as I pretty much worshipped Tellulah's snappy and witty dialogue, I've been salivating for My Ex From Hell. So when I saw it in NetGalley, I didn't hesitate and requested it immediately. It was 3AM when my request got accepted and I screamed in delight. Yes, even though it was 3AM. And yes, I was reprimanded by my parents. I don't care, MY EX FROM HELL! So you can feel how high my expectations are for this novel. I'm glad to report I was not disappointed!Tellulah's trademark snappy and witty dialogue is still evident in My Ex From Hell. I feel like I'm watching a sitcom from all the snark and sarcasm and I love every second of it. But it's not all fun and games as the plot and reveal are convoluted enough to make you think what really happened to Sophie. Their adventures were also exciting and wonderful to read. I love how Tellulah established the Greek mythology differently from what we commonly know. For example, Kai, who is Hades' son, is Persephone's love interest. Even though Tellulah changed that bit, the story was still rich and realistic (relative to its world) on its own that you can actually see this. I actually want this to be a movie! I love the mythology on this. The characters were all lovable. Sophie and Hannah's friendship was kickass and so enviable. Theo as the mysterious friend was loads of fun to read too. I also love all the meta and how aware the characters are that they don't make sense or that they're doing something stupid. They all sound like normal people and that's what makes this all the more relatable. Teen speak!I'm foreseeing a bit of a problem though because I dig Theo HARD. I love him. Which makes me want to ship him with Sophie even though I know that's never gonna happen. Can I have a Theo of my own? Sarcastic but eternally kind and selfless and a NERD, I am Team Theo. Sure, Kai is HOT but come on, I've always loved the beta heroes. Not only is Darling's dialogue snappy, her action scenes are bam-bam-bam as well! One moment Sophie and the gang are dangling mid-air and the next thing you know, Sophie's battling a dragon. It's just so action-packed that you'll be breezing through the pages. So as a first book in a series, it did its job well in establishing the world of The Blooming Goddess. I cannot wait to read the next book! I already miss the gang and I wanna read more of Sophie's journey. I recommend this to all YA lovers, especially those into Greek mythology or Greek-inspired stories.Go read it now!
