This book is essentially an edited transcript of conversations had between the author and someone who came seeking his process. It is, again, modeled on the Dialogues.It gives great insight into many things about the author and his process, filling in the blanks with some context and, more importantly, serving as a handbook to allow you to learn how to see the world (and hear/identify Mother Culture's whisperings) for yourself.Said another way, this book provides insight on just how the author came by his perspective on the world that allowed him to write Ishmael, Story of B, After Dachau, etc. Better yet, it teaches how you can do the same in everyday life. It is something of a practical guide.If you want to move past having the obvious biases of our society pointed out to you and start seeing them for yourself then this is the book for you. You too can be a Martian Anthropologist!

Wow. I wish there was a clue to what we could do with this knowledge! A brilliant mind wrote this book. I am never quite sure if I'm glad I read a Quinn book or if like in The Matrix, I'd rather be rich and forget what I know.

The insights into Quinn's mind are instructive, awe generating, full of untold hope- discern able almost intuitively. What a great, productive read!At times humbling, other times empowering, If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways never fails to impart a big change in our thinking process. We become part of the solution as soon as our thoughts are steered in a constructive way.

While I would agree that critical thinking is sorely lacking in our society and in our public schools' curricula, this book is unlikely to inspire you to think more critically. Read Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit or The Story of B instead.Quinn's interviewer in this book, Elaine, struggles to keep up with him as he leads her through his line of questioning. It was probably a very educational experience for her, but at times reading the transcript borders on tedium. Even Quinn seems to get frustrated a few times. There's a lot of redundancy as they often restate each other's questions and answers. The book never really goes anywhere. I didn't get much out of it.

I really enjoyed "Ishmael", "My Ishmael" and "The Story of B". But I found this more difficult reading. I still liked the way Quinn makes the reader look at history and life from a different aspect. Actually I left it with a bookmark near the end and will go back to it someday.

Daniel Quinn has many interesting and different ideas. However I feel most of his readers are after his explanation of Ishmael, while The Holy is my favorite book ever. I take comfort in the fact that one day squid will inherit the earth! Anyway, Quinn goes through questions and statements he receives from readers and discusses them with a girl, who wants to find out how Daniel Quinn does what he does. Sometimes it's frustrating, I wished it was a real live conversation and I could join in, but there is the internet, and I am sure I can. I did enjoy his going through and trying to teach, it's an interesting, rewarding, and frustrating process. It's always a challenge, thinking like someone else.

Thought provoking, although not quite on a par with the other books of his that I've read, still very worth the read.

Morris has just produced The Naked Man, a companion book to The Naked Woman, which appeared in 2004, and the latest in an evolutionary line stretching back to his career-defining, life-changing, collective-mentality-altering The Naked Ape, an instant bestseller when it was published in 1967 and now heading for sales of 20m. He has made a career out of telling us that 10,000 years of "civilisation" cannot offset several million years of hunter-gathering, and that we now live a life that is, in many ways, at odds with our genetic inheritance. The Naked Man exemplifies the tensions - and the pleasures - in Morris's richly varied career. The book is a long way from The Reproductive Behaviour of the Ten-Spined Stickleback, for which he was awarded his doctorate at Oxford in 1954. He could have had a distinguished career as what might be called an institutionalised zoologist - and for much of his time he has had exactly that - but in the late 1950s he fell among that dangerous tribe of television people, joining Granada to make the programme Zoo Time, which taught him how to popularise without dumbing down too much, made him a name and led to him writing The Naked Ape, which treated humans as animals and sought to explain all human behaviour in zoological terms. I learned so much from this book! It was a very fascinating story of both kidney transplant/disease and Iranian society.

The Iranian experience presented in this book offers a potential solution for America's growing dilemma where over 19,000 people die each year while on the organ transplant waiting list. Our current law which dates back 30 years now prohibits any meaningful form of compensation for live organ donors. In our society today, it is impractical to expect a sufficient number of donors to come forward out of pure humanitarian instincts and less than 1% of those who die each year end up being deceased transplant donors. This book paints a vivid picture of the dilemma we face in America if we do not change our current practices and laws. We can look forward to more deaths, continued poor quality of life for kidney diseased victims and much higher health costs. The most successful and cost effective solution is a live organ transplant!

Very informative and well written

This book is an interesting and informative look at how Iran and the USA have grappled with an important medical issue--organ donations. But what I found to most enjoyable was the recount of what life is like in Iran, a perspective that we don't get in the mainstream media. Dr. Fry-Revere has a keen eye for the details of everyday life in Iran about which she writes fluidly and easily.

This book accurately describes the life a patient has on dialysis. The USA medical community should relook at the living donor kidney current laws and reconsider how donors could be compensated for donating a kidney or liver.

An important work that will hopefully awaken the logic of organ selling and end the shortage, A well written and a mind-provoking read. Well done

Of the more than 100,000 waiting, only 15 percent get transplants, and over 30 percent of those will lose that kidney with the first five years."Iran's shortage was erased within 15 years of legally allowing donors to sell their kidneys.How can we not entertain the idea of reducing or eliminating the shortage in the US when there is such impressive evidence of a solution?The cultural, historical & religious information provided about Iran in the book are very helpful in understanding how selling a kidney in Iran is viewed and allowed in religious and legal contexts.The patience exercised & the risks taken by the author in order to research & examine the ethical complexities that surround this potential yet controversial solution to the kidney donation shortage are admirable & impressive.I appreciated the author's forthrightness about the internal & external conflicts experienced on the research trip.As a result, I felt at times as though I was having a conversation with the author because she addressed so many of the questions & concerns I had while reading the book.Dr. Fry-Revere's ability to anticipate, address, and answer these questions and concerns is remarkable.As I said at the beginning of my review...read this book.Seriously. Read this book.

As of 2/6/18 (On Chapter 3) I love it. I had the Logic Pro 9 edition of the same book and it was great. I'm now learning Logic Pro X so it made seance to get this one. The LP 9 Edition taught me so much and I'm excited to learn from this edition. Each chapter give you useful and new information on your DAW. I would recommend this book to anyone needing to learn logic. The last edition I had I just skipped to the parts that I needed but because that book was so awesome I think it's time for me to learn all the ins and outs and not just what I was needing. I'm going all the way with this one and reading it from front to back and eventually I want to be Apple Certified, which this book helps to you achieve. I'll try to come back with updates on this review as I get further along in the book.

This book is very well written and easy to follow. My original review only gave it 2 stars because I had trouble downloading the media needed for this book. Because of the breadth of topics and systems covered by PHAs, it cannot be too specific, but it does have good suggestions in the text and appendices. The interview as over. I watched the young Diane-Keaton look-alike as she wrapped up her radio talk show with an adroit assessment of my book, Joseph. She was, and is, reputed to be one of the hottest names in radio, and though she's young she's already won several prestigious awards. She is also Jewish, bright, and very articulate. I loved the interview. Her sharp, penetrating questions and her complete grasp of Joseph's character told me that she, unlike many Christian broadcasters, had actually read Joseph from cover to cover. I was impressed! After she had given a final nod to the engineer, she picked up her notes and asked, more out of politeness than anything else, "Now that Joseph is out, I suppose you'll be doing another book..." I nodded yes. "On what?" she asked casually. "On your irregular person." "Irregular?" She looked at me quizzically. "Yes, that person in your life who really bugs you to death." She digested that for a split second, and then dismissed it as an unimportant book by saying, "But don't you think life is full of those irregular kinds of people? There's this guy here at the station..." she gestured with her hands, and I understood. "There's the clerk in some store, or the freeway driver. They all bug us to death. We are surrounded by that kind of person... Her voice trailed off and implied that she didn't think I'd have a whole lot to say about irregular people, because we are simply living in a world where we are stuck with them. The look in her very pert, brown eyes also suggested that she was wondering why anybody would take the time and energy to bother with what was merely a fact of life. "That's not exactly who I mean," I volunteered, "The irregular person I'm talking about is a person you are related to - like your parents, a brother, sister, cousin, uncle, aunt, or even in-laws. And, in some cases, even a husband or a wife." Abruptly she stopped shuffling papers, leaned across the table, and said intently, "I see. Well, let me tell you, when that book is out, please come back for an interview - nobody ever talks about that person!" Then, even though both our day's schedules were already frantically jammed, we stayed for another half-hour and talked about her person. Most everyone has at least one person in their life who truly makes living one continuous pain in the derriere. What heightens the pain is that this person is not a mere acquaintance of ours. No, unfortunately it is more complicated than that, for we are related to them, either by birth or marriage.

I have had an Irregular Person in my life for many years who seems to take everything I say and do wrong and dislikes me as no one else does, for no apparent reason. This situation was affecting me so negatively, I would cry about it in the shower and on my knees as I prayed. I brought it up in my bible study group. Someone suggested that I read this book by Joyce Landorf, a Christian writer. Ms Landorf has an Irregular Person in her life, too, and is able to understand the situation and write about how to handle the complications an Irregular Person brings into one's life. She gives real solutions to living in this situation, and they work. This has been very valuable to me and changed my life for the better.

Do you have someone in your life that really bugs you? Someone who is critical of everything you do? Someone who you try to sneek past when you see them? Usually a relative, work colleague, or close neighbour? Then this is for you. Joyce combines psychology, religion, and self-help in a friendly, non-threatening way, with examples from her life, and from lives of people she knows. It helped me to start to repair a relationship. (It doesn't promise unrealistic, instant results). BTW, if you know someone who seems annoyed by you, it will give you insight into that situation, too!

EVERYONE would benefit from reading this book. I read it years ago and finally got my irregular person to read it. She laughed!! Still, things did get better. I have bought and given away 3 copies over the years. One for my granddaughter who just started college. She was amazed that I recognized her problem(without saying too much about her person, I told her about mine.) I pray for her in this.

We all have Irregular people in our lives, and this book helps us understand how to survive and quit getting hurt over and over again.

This book is one I go to for reminding myself that some people are not going to be reasonable, and that doesn't have to be a burden to me. I read this book when it first came out a few decades ago. It really helped me accept the strange and hurtful behavior of a family member. I read it again a few weeks ago, and it is just as pertinent and helpful as it was then. We all have "irregular people" in our lives, and it sure helps to have the correct perspective on them.

This book is a classic among Christian readers facing the difficulty of dealing with people who just won't love you, no matter what you do. Of course, the problem she has in sharing her own life experience with this issue is her attempt to "hide" the identity of the person who has hurt her so much...which doesn't take rock science to figure out. In fact, that bit of missing information interferes with hearing all she has to say about the subject because you find yourself wondering "who is it?" Overall, not a bad book and certainly helpful when dealing with people that you feel as a Christian you are to love but can't or won't love you in return. Certainly helps in letting people know that no one is alone in facing this heart breaking dilemma and that is does exist.

If someone in your life treats you in a different, difficult manner from the way everyone else treats you, you may have an irregular person in your life. I have that situation, ongoing because it is a family member, and this book has saved me many tears and heartaches. Joyce Landorf knows how to write honestly and openly from her own experiences, showing how to insolate yourself from stinging arrows of unwarranted criticism.

If you have anyone in your family or circle of relationships you have to be around, even if just at Christmas that you count the minutes until you do not have to be around them - this is for you -- the "irregular people", in your life that are throns in your flesh that you cannot just bail out on. Then this book is for you - a great, an in some ways humorous read. I love it and have given a lot as gifts.

This book has some wonderful articles that anyone can learn from. Personally I have taken to reading a few articles more than once e.g. "How will you measure your life by Clayton M. Christensen" and have gained some key insights I think I want to apply to my own life. On the other hand, some other articles talk more about the role of leadership which I do not think necessary or they use examples which aren't relevant to the central topic of self-management but rather people-management. These articles are oft cliche and may fail to appeal to a wide range of people who I think may be reading this book e.g. non-CEO's et cetera.

Ten articles relate to managing yourself to be happy in your career and personal life. Learn, grow into responsibilities, be recognized, and create a culture on agreeing on what they want from participation and on agreeing to what actions, to develop culture into embracing priorities and following procedures. Manage yourself by asking yourself these questions; what are my strengths, how do I work, what are my values, where do I belong, and what should I contribute. The best ways for a manager to be in control regarding his boss are; recommend and take resulting action, act, but advice at once, or act on your own and then routinely report. Resilient people accept reality, belief deeply that life is meaningful, and have an uncanny ability to improvise. Putting in longer hours to respond to the rising demands will inevitably take its toll, physically, emotionally, and mentally. Individuals need to recognize the cost of energy-depleting behaviors and then take responsibility to change them by going to bed early, exercising, loose weight, or have breakfast or dinner with your family. Attention Deficit Trait (ADT), caused by brain overload, is an epidemic in organizations nowadays. To combat ADT promote positive emotions, take control of your brain and organize yourself by handling things once only. Total leadership helps you mitigate a range of problems from making trade-offs. It starts with reflecting, then brainstorm possibilities, choose three most promising experiments, and measure progress. Everyone complains about not having enough time to deal with all the demands on them mostly coming from a most fragmented day. Carefully set boundaries and priorities to achieve far more than busy managers do. To elevate the performance of others, we have to elevate ourselves in the fundamental state of leadership. Ask yourself the question: "What result do I want to create"? It leads us from problem solving to purpose finding. Leaders should ask themselves seven types of questions on some periodic basis, to improve performance and preempt serious business problems about; vision and priorities, managing time, feedback, succession, evaluation and alignment, leading under pressure, an staying true to yourself. A leader's mood has the greatest impact on performance when it is upbeat, but it must also be in tune with those that surround him. A leaders uses four components of emotional intelligence; self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, to have resonance with their organization. To rewire the brain toward more emotional intelligence there is a five parts process; imagining your ideal self, come to terms with them, plan to bridge the gap, practice, and create a community of colleagues and family.

This book reads more like a project management book than a self-improvement book. It's written in classic HBR syntax with the multiple phases of project "YOU" to accomplish. The information, thankfully is transferable to other parts of my life, specifically the professional one... but as far as managing myself, I really don't fancy managing myself nor my life as a GANT chart.

This book is so awesome. It helped me reset when I was approaching burnout. You may have encountered pieces of this information at some point in your career, but it is nice to have it compiled. This books also demands a certain level of introspection. It can potentially be a quick read, but I enjoyed reading a chapter or two and subsequently reflecting on the practical application to my life.

Every Harvard business review book i’ve purchased has provided me with a wealth of information that I draw from in my personal and work life.

Love this book. Picked up in the airport. The concept of “how to find a career that you enjoy, with a good family life and STAY OUT OF JAIL” caught my attention. I’ve had my roofing business for 31 years and this book has simple and useable advice in each chapter. Managing roofers is easy for me, managing managers has been a challenge. This book has helped.

Several good tips and food for thought. Although some articles are not recent, management is management. I recommend it to people looking for ideas on how to improve their leadership skills.
