Great read. For years I have struggled with 'am I really addicted - or do I just need more discipline' this helped me clarify what was muddy and give up sugar and flour for good! Sober 4 months today :)

Obesity is on the rise, and with it are a million diets that claim to be the "right one". But is the problem food - or can people be addicted to food? These authors ascribe to the thought that yes, people can indeed be addicted to food. The first portion of the book focuses on the evidence supporting it (unfortunately, this is still a grey area, as many medical sciences still don't believe food addiction "is a thing", therefore, there aren't many studies to test it). Interspersed throughout are anecdotes about people and their lifelong relationship to food. At the end (the last chapter), the authors give helpful tips to combat food addiction - which include the ubiquitous 12-step program.I read this book thinking food addiction might be my problem, and while I do admit to overeating or eating badly, I've never stolen food from a store nor have I passed out after an all-night binging. And while sometimes I cannot stop thinking of food (and these times tend to be when I am traveling and obviously homesick), most of the time, I can eat my filling dinner and be done with food for the night. So although I found the book interesting and somewhat useful, I think others with a bigger problem with food may find it more helpful.I loved the large note section and bibliography (though it made reading the ebook weird, as the book proper ends at the 80% mark), so it would be easy enough to go through and check the research should I want to. But one thing that irked me, was the constant promotion of the 12-step program.I'm not saying people can't get success via the 12-steps; my concern is better elaborated by Dr Adi Jaffe in his article "How it doesn't work: The dogma of the 12 steps" showcased on Psychology Today, May 11, 2010:"In any other field, if one treatment doesn't work, another one is tried, and another. Different people with different conditions may need slightly different approaches. If no known treatment works, experimental ones are attempted. This is how medical science advances. Still, the notion of a physician blaming the patient for a treatment not working is ridiculous. There's an entire field built around intervention research and I'm pretty sure that simply dismissing the patient as constitutionally dishonest isn't a common technique."Many people and programs have this tendency that if you regain the weight you lost on Weight Watchers or Curves or Jenny Craig or Herbalife or MediFast, YOU are the problem. You just didn't do the program right. It can't possibly be the program that's wrong - nope, you just weren't dedicated enough.I would post the links to my google search results for "does the 12-step program work?", but Amazon doesn't allow it. However, there are several psychologists with interesting things to say about it (Dr Adi Jaffe, Dr Lance Dodes, and Dr. Stanton Peele have interesting work about what works and what doesn't).Again, I'm not saying the 12-steps are a complete crock, but like most things, there is not one way to lose weight, there is not one way to stepping away from your addictions. I can think of many diet books that claim "Eat MY way and lose weight, otherwise be a fat pig" - and every time I hear something like this, I immediately think, "Oh, you're selling me something. I have to hold you at a distance now and be skeptical of everything you say."I do find it compelling that people could have food addiction. I think anything can be addictive, depending on the person, the substance, and what is going on in the person's life (note how many of the people in the anecdote mention some type of trauma and how eating food made them feel "safe"). But I don't think the 12-step program is the end all, be-all.And for those of us with just an unhealthy relationship with food - maybe following the steps of abstinence from trigger foods isn't a bad idea. I could definitely use to eat less processed foods myself - in fact, I've spent the last week eating more salads, quinoa, fruits and trail mix interspersed with one treat a day (Simple Truth's diet ice cream - which blows Halo Top out of the water, IMO), and I'm already noting how much better I feel, and how much less I crave the donuts, cakes, and cookies that can absorb my mind.

This book is long overdue! Thank you for writing about the physiological aspects of food addiction in such a clear, understandable manner that people without a medical degree can understand! So many people suffer from food addiction and this book will help provide comfort, reassurance, and guidance. I am a clinical psychologist and recommend that all of my patients who are battling food addiction read Food Junkies! All professionals working in the medical, addiction, weight loss and mental health areas would benefit from reading this as well!

As a food addict/compulsive eater, this book goes a long way in helping the reader understand that addiction to food is a very real problem for many people. My 10-year-old daughter, who may also be a compulsive eater, was captivated by the cover. She asked, "Mom, can I read this book, too?" and immediately squirreled it away in her room. She related to the concept of it, even if she is too young to fully understand what addiction is. We talked about it a few weeks later. About the title, why the photo was chosen, how did it make her feel, etc. It was a good teaching tool and we didn't even get past the first page. For those who would say that it is a "trigger" then I would suggest that for most people who are food addicts/compulsive eaters, that in real life, we have to learn to live around foods that are not ours. For me, the solution is found in making the foods that I do eat so delicious and filling (and nutritious) that "cravings" come and go, but I do not have to give in to them.Food Junkies provides clear insight into the problem of society as a whole acknowledging food addiction as a real issue for many people. It also offers sound, clear guidance on long-term recovery and successful treatment for food addiction. Many thanks to the author for writing this book!

I loved this book because I met people who are just like me - they use food as a crutch to get though the day. However I now weight 275 lb (no shame in writing that!!) & I know why I've been killing myself slowly by food. I need to make some changes. Five stars for me if there was a group of readers of this book who came together as a support system.

I found lots of useful tidbits in here so I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 3. I think the author should have talked more about recovery and given hope, it felt bleak finishing up reading that book.

This is a great book. She's done a wonderful job of explaining the reality that food can be a drug. We are a society with growing addictions. Whether it is something in our evolving genes or changes in our society, it is a very real problem that needs to be understood and addressed.

This is essential reading for anyone concerned with or about food addiction. It provides much needed medical and scientific information about the nature of food addiction -- something that is very misunderstood. The book also brings in the human element by relating stories of people in the various stages of food addiction -- those that came successfully into recovery and those that were ultimately defeated by this disease.

This also has the RIghts of ManThough there is much any American will disagree with, his observations make one think, why you do, or do not agree with what he observed.

I found this a very good book and found the reasons for the previous reviews very much off base.

Nice condition!

Well the book they sent me isn't as handsome as the one in the picture. The copy I got is also printed by the NRA which to me is a little suspect but so far it seems worth the 8 dollars. I'm sure I will be buying another copy on down the line not only to see if there are differences but because the man made leather is already taking a beating from being toted around on my daily excursions.

Don't pick up this book thinking that you will get a copy of the writings of Thomas Paine. This is a collection of the writings of Thomas Paine put together by a group of Communists that edit his writings in such a way as to further their ideology. I hadn't read Paine's writings for years, so I bought this wanting to once again read Paine's writings about the American ideal of individual determinism, liberty, and limited government, and I foolishly didn't look up the authors first, who happen to be typical Stalists academics. Why hard core leftists would read Paine is beyond me (although they like that he participated in the French Revolution, an act that Paine came later to greatly regret as it turned into indiscriminate and terrible bloodshed). The American Revolution wasn't really a revolution. It was more of a natural evolution that formed naturally from liberties that had been developing in England since the Magna Carta. Anyway, after reading the first couple of pages, I had to clean coffee out of the carpet where I spit it out shock. Now I must go take a shower and try to wash off all of the wrongness, just like that guy in the Crying Game.

Following the "Little Schemer" series, this book introduces under the form of a dialogue, and using a toy language, the mysteries of dependently typed languages. Both extremely pleasant to read and challenging.

Let me be clear; this is not a book for everyone. It did happen, though, to be *exactly* the right book for me. It's written, like the other books in the "Little X-er" series, in the form of a dialogue between a teacher and an (extremely good) student. This means that every point in the book invites you to figure out what the answer should be for yourself; this kind of mental struggle is incredibly valuable in learning material and making it your own.The topic is Type Theory; specifically, the kind of intuitionistic type theory that underlies languages like Agda, Idris, and Coq. This book provides a lovely gem of a language (pie) in which to explore these ideas. If you're interested in proof-oriented languages like these and you have substantial familiarity with functional languages, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

A nice and simple introduction to a complex topic. Could be a bit tedious for someone just wanting to come up to speed with DTs. Overall five stars without a doubt.

The way this book teaches a complex topic like dependent types is just fantastic. If you take the time to read through each frame and think about the next frame before you read it, you'll learn so much and so well. Take the time to read and understand every frame. Highly, highly recommended.

Well written on a challenging topic.

The best introduction to dependent types.

Very explicit

This book is an excellent introduction to dependent type theory.Rather than work with one of the major full-featured languagessuch as Coq, Agda, or Idris, the authors chose to design a littleteaching language called Pie. This was the right choice, becauseit helps the reader get clear on the fundamentals of dependenttype theory without being confused by the role of all of the(helpful) bells and whistles that the major languages have. Thebook focuses on the eliminators, or ways of using, each of thedependent types. The little Pie language foregoes user-definedinductive data types, a universe hierarchy, and pattern matching, and instead focuses on a core set of built-in dependent types (Pitypes, Sigma types, and some other basics) along with eliminatorsinstead of pattern matching. I learned recursion from The LittleSchemer a decade ago, but I like this book even better. Thedepth of understanding of the authors is profound, the attentionto detail is amazing, and the insight into what learners need isunbelievable. This is one of my favorite 50 books of all time.

One of my favorite all time teachers (Dr Rabbi Hartman) encountering another of my favorite all time teachers (The Rav). I could visualize Dr Rabbi Hartman giving this as a lecture. (I was a student of his back at Hebrew U in 1973-4).

This book analyzes several of Rav Soloveitchik's responsa and essays, including:*Soloveitchik's essay "Halakhic Man". In this essay, Soloveitchik explains and praises "halakhic man": the self-confident scholar who not only follows halakha, but has a passion for study. The goal of this legal hero is not to know God through mysticism, but to find new legal insights through rigorous analysis. According to Hartman, Soloveitchik "discerns a profound dialectic between relevation and intellectual creativity. Although halakhic man believes that every word of Torah is divine, this very word becomes his possession and plaything." So man does not merely walk obediently with God, but also creates a spiritual civilization through his own interpretive skills. But Hartman's analysis leads to a troubling (for me) question: obviously, a scholar could be highly creative at the time the Mishnah and Talmud were being shaped. But how creative can a scholar be today, when so much of Jewish law has been fixed by thousands of years of evolution? Can someone truly be a halakhic hero in such a world?*Soloveitchik's most famous essay, "The Lonely Man of Faith." In that essay, he explains how man is torn between his desire to dominate and master the world (as shown in the Genesis 1 narrative) and his desire to submit to God. In the latter vision, Man is not satisfied with knowing "the impersonal God of the cosmos" but a more personal God who can provide "relational intensity and intimacy with God." Again, Soloveitchik sees a dialectic: here, between majesty (the human who dominates nature, and who praises God for helping him dominate nature and for creating nature) and intimacy with God. Modern, secular man has difficulty with the second type of relationship.*Soloveitchik's writing on Judeo-Christian theological dialogue. Apparently, Soloveitchik analogizes the Jewish relationship to God to a personal relationship- just as one does not debate an intimate personal relationship, one does not debate an intimate relationship to God with (in Soloveitchik's words) "others whose relationship to God has been molded by different historical events and in different terms."*Soloveitchik's essay on prayer. Soloveitchik has two views of petitionary prayer- first as self-discovery (insofar as the standard words of prayer teach us what our needs ought to be) and second as "acknowledging the unlimited rule of the divine and the complete feebleness of mankind." According to Hartman, Soloveitchik's work involves one difficulty: Soloveitchik writes that because human beings are so helpless before God, "they are dependent upon precedent to dare pray at all ... [and thus he] considered it presumptous to make the slightest change in the forms of prayer ... even spontaneous voluntary prayer." Yet according to Hartman, there is ample halakhic precedent in favor of spontaneous prayer. What was Soloveitchik thinking? Hartman asserts that Soloveitchik overemphasizes the terror inherent in prayer.

Rabbi David Hartman is a Torah teacher of courage and authenticiy. Here he expounds and contends with the beloved teacher who helped inspire him in ' learning' and ' thought'.This is from Rabbi Hartman's moving introduction." In the course of my philosophical studies and at crucial moments of life when I experienced difficult periods of doubt, and questioned some of the prevailing ,widely accepted theological and moral positions found in the halakhic tradition, he was the figure , the living image that nurtured and sustained my committment. His impact on me during ten yearsof studying with him has never lost its power and influence. Rabbi Soloveitchik represented a Judaism committed to intellectual courage, integrity and openness- the antithesis to dogma and fanaticism" pp.IX-X Rabbi Hartman's dialogue with the work of Rabbi Soloveitchik challenges other understandings of the Rav, and opens up new perspectives for thought. This is like all of Rabbi Hartman's works an illuminating and passionate contribution to the world of Jewish thought.

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (1903-1993) was and still is the leading rabbinical figure of Modern Orthodox Judaism. He was the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva University, the senior lecturer on Talmud. He was the advisor to the Rabbinical Council of America, the organization of about 1,000 Orthodox rabbis. Since many of today's Modern Orthodox rabbis graduated from Yeshiva University and belong to the Rabbinical Council of America, his influence upon the rabbis and, hence, upon their congregations has been great. Who was this man? David Hartman, one of today's leading thinkers, a rabbi and Ph.D., evaluates the thinking of Rabbi Soloveitchik in this interesting and revealing book. This volume was first published in 2001 and reissued in 2004. It was the winner of two National Jewish Book Awards. In his more recent book about Rabbi Soloveitchik, The God Who Hates Lies, Confronting & Rethinking Jewish Tradition, published in 2011, Dr. Hartman points out that Modern Orthodox Judaism has in many respects been frozen in suspended animation, refusing to budge and grow despite moral imperatives and logic, resulting in many people being harmed. A prime example of this phenomenon is the failure of Modern Orthodox leaders to address the problem of the aguna, the "chained one," the wife whose husband refuses to give her a Jewish divorce and who is unable to remarry. This situation exists because of an interpretation of the Torah that only a man can give a divorce. It exists today because of the ruling issued by Rabbi Soloveitchik, Dr. Hartman points out, that the age-old interpretation and practice should not be changed despite the harm that it inflicts upon many women. I described this issue in my review of this book and in an article about what Dr. Hartman considers "Rabbi Soloveitchik's Mistake," which can be found, among other sites, in my website at [...]. The problem, in short, is that despite his profound learning, Rabbi Soloveitchik was very conservative in his thinking and practices and insisted that even when matters do not seem to make sense Jews must, as the Protestant theologian Soren Kierkegaard stated, take a leap of faith. In this earlier book, Dr. Hartman analyses several of Rabbi Soloveitchik's writings. According to Rabbi Soloveitchik, the Halakhic Man, the title he gave one of his most influential writings, is a Jew who follows the teachings of the Torah as interpreted by the ancient rabbis. A Jew, in his view, "studies halakhah (Jewish law) simply because it is an extension of God's word." Not because, as the great sage Moses Maimonides (1138-1204) wrote, to acquire true ideas and to improve oneself and society.Dr. Hartman explains that Rabbi Soloveitchik's Halakhic Man "is surrounded by clear normative principles. His perception of the world is firmly anchored." He "is controlled by the normative halakhic framework.... Halakhah defines not only what halakhic man will see, but also the emotions with which he responds to prosperity and tragedy," even to the terrible tragedy of the "chained woman."Rabbi Soloveitchik gives as his model the story of Rabbi Elijah Pruznu whose beloved daughter was dying, who asked her doctor how many minutes his daughter had until she would die. When he received the doctor's reply, he returned to his room to put on the tefillin, which Orthodox Jews wear for the morning service, because once his daughter died he would, by the halakha, be unable to wear them until she was buried. Then he took them off and went to his daughter's room just in time to see her die.Hartman comments, "There is something abnormal - one might even say inhuman - about R. Elijah's behavior. One would normally expect a father to want to be with his daughter in her final moments. When a child is dying, one would not expect a father to worry about such a question as, What mitzvot (biblical commands) will I be unable to perform when my status changes to a mourner?" This is the kind of indifference that prompted Rabbi Soloveitchik to rule that the chained woman must stay shackled.Rabbi Soloveitchik sees the Halakhic Man as not "the harmonious individual...but the torn soul and the shattered spirit...involved in an irresolvable contradiction." The Jew, according to his view of Judaism acknowledges "total dependency and helplessness before God, that only God is mighty and not they, that God is holy and they are but dust and ashes."These are the views of Rabbi Soloveitchik and he has many followers. But they are not the teachings, as he admits, of many others, such as Maimonides. His critics, who are mentioned in this book, say that he misunderstood Judaism.
